Decoder-in-the-Loop: Genetic Optimization-based LDPC Code Design
LDPC code design tools typically rely on asymptotic code behavior and are
affected by an unavoidable performance degradation due to model imperfections
in the short length regime. We propose an LDPC code design scheme based on an
evolutionary algorithm, the Genetic Algorithm (GenAlg), implementing a
"decoder-in-the-loop" concept. It inherently takes into consideration the
channel, code length and the number of iterations while optimizing the
error-rate of the actual decoder hardware architecture. We construct short
length LDPC codes (i.e., the parity-check matrix) with error-rate performance
comparable to, or even outperforming that of well-designed standardized short
length LDPC codes over both AWGN and Rayleigh fading channels. Our proposed
algorithm can be used to design LDPC codes with special graph structures (e.g.,
accumulator-based codes) to facilitate the encoding step, or to satisfy any
other practical requirement. Moreover, GenAlg can be used to design LDPC codes
with the aim of reducing decoding latency and complexity, leading to coding
gains of up to dB and dB at BLER of for both AWGN and
Rayleigh fading channels, respectively, when compared to state-of-the-art short
LDPC codes. Also, we analyze what can be learned from the resulting codes and,
as such, the GenAlg particularly highlights design paradigms of short length
LDPC codes (e.g., codes with degree-1 variable nodes obtain very good results).Comment: in IEEE Access, 201
Regenerative and Adaptive schemes Based on Network Coding for Wireless Relay Network
Recent technological advances in wireless communications offer new
opportunities and challenges for relay network. To enhance system performance,
Demodulate-Network Coding (Dm-NC) scheme has been examined at relay node; it
works directly to De-map the received signals and after that forward the
mixture to the destination. Simulation analysis has been proven that the
performance of Dm-NC has superiority over analog-NC. In addition, the
Quantize-Decode-NC scheme (QDF-NC) has been introduced. The presented
simulation results clearly provide that the QDF-NC perform better than
analog-NC. The toggle between analogNC and QDF-NC is simulated in order to
investigate delay and power consumption reduction at relay node.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, International Journal of Computer Networks &

Joint Adaptive Modulation-Coding and Cooperative ARQ for Wireless Relay Networks
This paper presents a cross-layer approach to jointly design adaptive
modulation and coding (AMC) at the physical layer and cooperative truncated
automatic repeat request (ARQ) protocol at the data link layer. We first derive
an exact closed form expression for the spectral efficiency of the proposed
joint AMC-cooperative ARQ scheme. Aiming at maximizing this system performance
measure, we then optimize an AMC scheme which directly satisfies a prescribed
packet loss rate constraint at the data-link layer. The results indicate that
utilizing cooperative ARQ as a retransmission strategy, noticeably enhances the
spectral efficiency compared with the system that employs AMC alone at the
physical layer. Moreover, the proposed adaptive rate cooperative ARQ scheme
outperforms the fixed rate counterpart when the transmission modes at the
source and relay are chosen based on the channel statistics. This in turn
quantifies the possible gain achieved by joint design of AMC and ARQ in
wireless relay networks.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, To appear in the Proceedings of the 2008 IEEE

Turbo receivers for interleave-division multiple-access systems
In this paper several turbo receivers for Interleave-Division Multiple-Access (IDMA) systems will be discussed. The multiple access system model is presented first. The optimal, Maximum A Posteriori (MAP) algorithm, is then presented. It will be shown that the use of a precoding technique at the emitter side is applicable to IDMA systems. Several low complexity Multi-User Detector (MUD), based on the Gaussian approximation, will be next discussed. It will be shown that the MUD with Probabilistic Data Association (PDA) algorithm provides faster convergence of the turbo receiver. The discussed turbo receivers will be evaluated by means of Bit Error Rate (BER) simulations and EXtrinsic Information Transfer (EXIT) charts
Coding theorems for turbo code ensembles
This paper is devoted to a Shannon-theoretic study of turbo codes. We prove that ensembles of parallel and serial turbo codes are "good" in the following sense. For a turbo code ensemble defined by a fixed set of component codes (subject only to mild necessary restrictions), there exists a positive number γ0 such that for any binary-input memoryless channel whose Bhattacharyya noise parameter is less than γ0, the average maximum-likelihood (ML) decoder block error probability approaches zero, at least as fast as n -β, where β is the "interleaver gain" exponent defined by Benedetto et al. in 1996
