Context Aware Mobile Knowledge Management System in Healthcare

Clinical practitioners need to have the right information, at the right time, at the right place; which is possible by mobile healthcare. It is not only important for them to have the right information, but they have to manage this right information with proper knowledge, which requires the skills for efficient knowledge management in a mobile healthcare setting. Utilization of mobile devices in healthcare to share knowledge may not only improve the decision taking time, but also reduces the medical errors and costs involved. Need for this information sharing may often be required across various hospital staff that play variety of roles (as practitioners, nurses, administrative staff etc.) and works in multiple schedules (work shifts: night, day etc.), resulting in need for proper ‘context aware’ knowledge. This research paper is an attempt to develop a context aware model which can help the healthcare organizations in efficiently practicing the knowledge management in a context based mobile healthcare setting

Ubi-App: A Ubiquitous Application for Universal Access from Handheld Devices

Universal access from a handheld device (such as a PDA, cell phone) at any time or anywhere is now a reality. Ubicomp Assistant (UA) (Sharmin et al. in Proceedings of the 21st annual ACM symposium on applied computing (ACM SAC 2006), Dijon, France, pp 1013–1017, 2006) is an integral service of MARKS (Sharmin et al. in Proceedings of the third international conference on information technology: new generations (ITNG 2006), Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, pp 306–313, 2006). It is a middleware developed for handheld devices, and has been designed to accommodate different types of users (e.g., education, healthcare, marketing, or business). This customizable service employs the ubiquitous nature of current short range, low-power wireless connectivity and readily available, low-cost lightweight mobile devices. These devices can reach other neighbouring devices using a free short-range ad hoc network. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, the UA service is the only service designed for these devices. This paper presents the details of Ubi-App, a ubiquitous application for universal access from any handheld device, which uses UA as a service. The results of a usability test and performance evaluation of the prototype show that Ubi-App is useful, easy to use, easy to install, and does not degrade the performance of the device

Evaluation of Telehealth Equipment

The aim of the project was to evaluate the use of Telehealth equipment in the homes of older community-dwelling people, and to review its social and economic impact. A mixed methods approach was adopted, involving interviews, observation and Depression Anxiety Stress Scales. The overall impression gained from participants was an enhancement to the self-perceived quality of daily functioning. Less benefit was observed by those who had been self-monitoring previously. The greatest benefit was apparent in those participants where changes in behaviours to prevent an exacerbation of their condition was possible, through either better compliance with medication, or better understanding the impact of medication on their vital signs and what that meant to their daily activities. The economic benefits appear to be linked to that social improvement. A greater focus on specific conditions and the ability to achieve stability in self-management could strengthen the evidence for targeted economic benefits

e-Business challenges and directions: important themes from the first ICE-B workshop

A three-day asynchronous, interactive workshop was held at ICE-B’10 in Piraeus, Greece in July of 2010. This event captured conference themes for e-Business challenges and directions across four subject areas: a) e-Business applications and models, b) enterprise engineering, c) mobility, d) business collaboration and e-Services, and e) technology platforms. Quality Function Deployment (QFD) methods were used to gather, organize and evaluate themes and their ratings. This paper summarizes the most important themes rated by participants: a) Since technology is becoming more economic and social in nature, more agile and context-based application develop methods are needed. b) Enterprise engineering approaches are needed to support the design of systems that can evolve with changing stakeholder needs. c) The digital native groundswell requires changes to business models, operations, and systems to support Prosumers. d) Intelligence and interoperability are needed to address Prosumer activity and their highly customized product purchases. e) Technology platforms must rapidly and correctly adapt, provide widespread offerings and scale appropriately, in the context of changing situational contexts

Human, organizational and relational capital are co-created in processes of strategic communication between organizations and stakeholders. Exploratory Research Methods for the Extremely Mobile: Supporting Community Interaction Amongst Backpackers

Mobile communities of backpackers represent a challenging population to study because of frequent and long-duration of movement, distributed group structure, and adventuresome activities. Five types of mobile group studies are presented here, which address challenges posed by this context to existing methods. Methods used include: contextual interviews, site surveys, participatory activities, field trips, team ethnography, contextual questionnaires, and electronic diary methods. The structure of each method is described, reflected upon and recommendations are made for its effective use. Many existing mobile and CSCW methods have difficulties when applied to mobile groups, and many are not designed for exploratory research dealing with product conceptualization or requirements analysis. We propose that improvising with a diverse set of available methods is appropriate for many mobile research situations. It may also be advantageous to use multiple methods which explore different aspects of target user groups' behaviour from a variety of perspectives. Furthermore, piloting studies to test methods with new user groups or situations, and using in-situ methods is advisable
