    Enhancing design learning using a digital repository

    The process of design is context dependent and open-ended, and therefore does not revolve around a specific body of information or knowledge. The educational paradigm shift in the area of engineering design from teaching to coaching and the increased use of social constructivist learning ideals requires students to have access to as wide a range of information as possible. Digital resources provide an excellent opportunity for extending the range of information available to design students and to this end, as part of a joint research program with Stanford University, the University of Strathclyde has developed a groupware product called LauLima to provide students with a collaborative environment which allows them to gather, organise, store and share information. This paper describes the improvement to design learning, based on a Design Knowledge Framework, in a 3rd year product design engineering project from session 03/04 to 04/05 which has been facilitated by the implementation of this technology

The information literacy portion of the project offers a repository of high quality interactive digital learning objects (DLOs) in the MERLOT repository.     Blackbox: A Large Scale Repository of Novice Programmers’ Activity

    Automatically observing and recording the programming be- haviour of novices is an established computing education research technique. However, prior studies have been con- ducted at a single institution on a small or medium scale, without the possibility of data re-use. Now, the widespread availability of always-on Internet access allows for data col- lection at a much larger, global scale. In this paper we re- port on the Blackbox project, begun in June 2013. Black- box is a perpetual data collection project that collects data from worldwide users of the BlueJ IDE – a programming environment designed for novice programmers. Over one hundred thousand users have already opted-in to Blackbox. The collected data is anonymous and is available to other researchers for use in their own studies, thus benefitting the larger research community. In this paper, we describe the data available via Blackbox, show some examples of analyses that can be performed using the collected data, and discuss some of the analysis challenges that lie ahead

    MERLIN grew out of an interest in exploring the cost-effective integration of automatic subject description in eprints repositories. Primarily, the project wished to demonstrate opportunities for using the tools produced by NaCTeM, the National Centre for Text Mining, over repository full text. The project additionally sought to explore opportunities for improving repository discovery through interactions between text-mined keywords and on-line thesauri, specifically the HILT tools. MERLIN used the London Universities aggregation service, LASSO, to demonstrate term extraction and thesaurus integration with full text repository content. A user interface was developed to support the extended functionality. Formative evaluation, user testing and final evaluation all preceded the release of an open source, re-usable web application, to allow the MERLIN metadata enrichment technology to be incorporated into any repository on any platform

    Symposium introduction - ethics and sustainable agri-food governance: appraisal and new directions

    © Springer Nature B.V. 2019This Symposium contributes to a theoretical and methodological discussion on the role of ethics and responsibility in the governance of agri-food systems, as drivers for transitions towards sustainability. The papers in the Symposium are the outcomes of a collective reflection that was initiated at the European Society for Rural Sociology (ESRS) 2017 congress, within the Working Group on Ethics and sustainable agri-food governance. The session examined how ethics and ethical values drive change in the agri-food system, and how they increasingly evolve and influence food system governance. Building on the outcomes of the ESRS Working Group, the collection of papers in this Symposium fosters and deepens the discussion on the role of ethics in food systems, ranging across different food system actors, activities and contexts and presents new theoretical and methodological frameworks to understand the construction of more ethical agri-food systems.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio

    Enthusing and inspiring with reusable kinaesthetic activities

    We describe the experiences of three University projects that use a style of physical, non-computer based activity to enthuse and teach school students computer science concepts. We show that this kind of activity is effective as an outreach and teaching resource even when reused across different age/ability ranges, in lecture and workshop formats and for delivery by different people. We introduce the concept of a Reusable Outreach Object (ROO) that extends Reusable Learning Objects. and argue for a community effort in developing a repository of such objects

    The OTiS (Online Teaching in Scotland) programme, run by the now defunct Scotcit programme, ran an International e-Workshop on Developing Online Tutoring Skills which was held between 8–12 May 2000. It was organised by Heriot–Watt University, Edinburgh and The Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, UK. Out of this workshop came the seminal Online Tutoring E-Book, a generic primer on e-learning pedagogy and methodology, full of practical implementation guidelines. Although the Scotcit programme ended some years ago, the E-Book has been copied to the SONET site as a series of PDF files, which are now available via the ALT Open Access Repository. The editor, Carol Higgison, is currently working in e-learning at the University of Bradford (see her staff profile) and is the Chair of the Association for Learning Technology (ALT)

    Cooperative rule-learning: a metacognitive interpretation

    Effects of vocalization of reasoning, and working with a partner, on rule-learning tasks were investigated. Subjects completed eight rule-learning problems, while working alone or as pairs. The trials to solution, proportion of untenable hypotheses, strategy efficiency, and decision time were assessed in both a learning and 48-hour delayed transfer session. Results of Experiment 1 indicated that subjects trained as pairs evinced a decline in processing, but improved latency, in the transfer of performance from the learning to transfer session. Results of Experiment 2 indicated the transfer between sessions for individual subjects, across a variety of stimulus material, was generally positive. Results of Experiment 3 indicated that working with a partner improved performance while with the partner, but not subsequent performance. Also, vocalization of reasoning during the learning session led to improved performance in both sessions, for individually trained subjects. For previously paired subjects, vocalization of reasoning in the learning session led to a less severe drop in performance in the transfer session than did nonvocalization

    Improving the Usability of Organizational Data Systems

    For research data repositories, web interfaces are usually the primary, if not the only, method that data users have to interact with repository systems. Data users often search, discover, understand, access, and sometimes use data directly through repository web interfaces. Given that sub-par user interfaces can reduce the ability of users to locate, obtain, and use data, it is important to consider how repositories’ web interfaces can be evaluated and improved in order to ensure useful and successful user interactions. This paper discusses how usability assessment techniques are being applied to improve the functioning of data repository interfaces at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). At NCAR, a new suite of data system tools is being developed and collectively called the NCAR Digital Asset Services Hub (DASH). Usability evaluation techniques have been used throughout the NCAR DASH design and implementation cycles in order to ensure that the systems work well together for the intended user base. By applying user study, paper prototype, competitive analysis, journey mapping, and heuristic evaluation, the NCAR DASH Search and Repository experiences provide examples for how data systems can benefit from usability principles and techniques. Integrating usability principles and techniques into repository system design and implementation workflows helps to optimize the systems’ overall user experience
