    A study of radar cross section measurement techniques

    Past, present, and proposed future technologies for the measurement of radar cross section were studied. The purpose was to determine which method(s) could most advantageously be implemented in the large microwave anechoic chamber facility which is operated at the antenna test range site. The progression toward performing radar cross section measurements of space vehicles with which the Orbital Maneuvering Vehicle will be called upon to rendezvous and dock is a natural outgrowth of previous work conducted in recent years of developing a high accuracy range and velocity sensing radar system. The radar system was designed to support the rendezvous and docking of the Orbital Maneuvering Vehicle with various other space vehicles. The measurement of radar cross sections of space vehicles will be necessary in order to plan properly for Orbital Maneuvering Vehicle rendezvous and docking assignments. The methods which were studied include: standard far-field measurements; reflector-type compact range measurements; lens-type compact range measurement; near field/far field transformations; and computer predictive modeling.     Solar array conceptual design for the Halley's Comet ion drive mission, phase 2

    Conceptual design studies were performed directed toward a high power, ultralightweight solar array, compatible with the requirements for the Halley's Comet Ion Drive Mission. A planar, rollup array design concept capable of producing 120 kW at 1 AU and 6 kW at 4.5 AU, and a concentrator, rollup array design concept capable of producing 60 kW at 1 AU and 15.5 kW at 4.5 AU evolved. Both arrays make maximum use of thin film, lightweight technology. The Halley's Comet spacecraft and mission requirements developed from preliminary definition to a more finalized and mature design. As solar array requirements were updated, conceptual design iterations were necessary to keep pace with the rapidly changing program objectives and goals. The Halley's Comet Mission program status and design approaches were reviewed and more realistic power requirements at 4.5 AU for the ion engines were established at the 12 to 16 kW range. This higher power necessitated a change from the planar array design to a concentrator array design in order to remain within suitable cost and weight objectives

    Target Assignment in Robotic Networks: Distance Optimality Guarantees and Hierarchical Strategies

    We study the problem of multi-robot target assignment to minimize the total distance traveled by the robots until they all reach an equal number of static targets. In the first half of the paper, we present a necessary and sufficient condition under which true distance optimality can be achieved for robots with limited communication and target-sensing ranges. Moreover, we provide an explicit, non-asymptotic formula for computing the number of robots needed to achieve distance optimality in terms of the robots' communication and target-sensing ranges with arbitrary guaranteed probabilities. The same bounds are also shown to be asymptotically tight. In the second half of the paper, we present suboptimal strategies for use when the number of robots cannot be chosen freely. Assuming first that all targets are known to all robots, we employ a hierarchical communication model in which robots communicate only with other robots in the same partitioned region. This hierarchical communication model leads to constant approximations of true distance-optimal solutions under mild assumptions. We then revisit the limited communication and sensing models. By combining simple rendezvous-based strategies with a hierarchical communication model, we obtain decentralized hierarchical strategies that achieve constant approximation ratios with respect to true distance optimality. Results of simulation show that the approximation ratio is as low as 1.4

    Cosmic Dust Collection Facility: Scientific objectives and programmatic relations

    The science objectives are summarized for the Cosmic Dust Collection Facility (CDCF) on Space Station Freedom and these objectives are related to ongoing science programs and mission planning within NASA. The purpose is to illustrate the potential of the CDCF project within the broad context of early solar system sciences that emphasize the study of primitive objects in state-of-the-art analytical and experimental laboratories on Earth. Current knowledge about the sources of cosmic dust and their associated orbital dynamics is examined, and the results are reviewed of modern microanalytical investigations of extraterrestrial dust particles collected on Earth. Major areas of scientific inquiry and uncertainty are identified and it is shown how CDCF will contribute to their solution. General facility and instrument concepts that need to be pursued are introduced, and the major development tasks that are needed to attain the scientific objectives of the CDCF project are identified

    A Review and Gap Analysis of Exploiting Aerodynamic Forces as a Means to Control Satellite Formation Flight

    Using several small, unconnected satellites flying in formation rather than a single monolithic satellite has many advantages. As an example, separate optical systems can be combined to function as a single larger (synthetic) aperture. When the aperture is synthesized, the independent optical systems are phased to form a common image field with its resolution determined by the maximum dimension of the array. Hence, a formation is capable of much finer resolution than it could be accomplished by any single element. In order for the formation to maintain its intended design despite present perturbations (formation keeping), to perform rendezvous maneuvers or to change the formation design (reconfiguration) control forces need to be generated. To this day, using chemical and/or electric thrusters are the methods of choice. However, their utilization has detrimental effects on small satellites’ limited mass, volume and power budgets. In the mid-eighties, Caroline Lee Leonard published her pioneering work [1] proving the potential of using differential drag as a means of propellant-less source of control for satellite formation flight. This method consists of varying the aerodynamic drag experienced by different spacecraft, thus generating differential accelerations between them. Since its control authority is limited to the in-plane motion, Horsley [2] proposed to use differential lift as a means to control the out-of-plane motion. Due to its promising benefits, a variety of studies from researches around the world have enhanced Leonard’s work over past decades which results in a multitude of available literature. Besides giving an introduction into the method the major contributions of this paper is twofold: first, an extensive literature review of the major contributions which led to the current state-of-the-art of different lift and drag based satellite formation control is presented. Second, based on these insights key knowledge gaps that need to be addressed in order to enhance the current state-of-the-art are revealed and discussed. In closer detail, the interdependence between the feasibility domain and advanced satellite surface materials as well as the necessity of robust control methods able to cope with the occurring uncertainties is assessed.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    Spaceport operations for deep space missions

    Space Station Freedom is designed with the capability to cost-effectively evolve into a transportation node which can support manned lunar and Mars missions. To extend a permanent human presence to the outer planets (moon outposts) and to nearby star systems, additional orbiting space infrastructure and great advances in propulsion system and other technologies will be required. To identify primary operations and management requirements for these deep space missions, an interstellar design concept was developed and analyzed. The assembly, test, servicing, logistics resupply, and increment management techniques anticipated for lunar and Mars missions appear to provide a pattern which can be extended in an analogous manner to deep space missions. A long range, space infrastructure development plan (encompassing deep space missions) coupled with energetic, breakthrough level propulsion research should be initiated now to assist in making the best budget and schedule decisions
