An Extended Stable Marriage Problem Algorithm for Clone Detection
Code cloning negatively affects industrial software and threatens
intellectual property. This paper presents a novel approach to detecting cloned
software by using a bijective matching technique. The proposed approach focuses
on increasing the range of similarity measures and thus enhancing the precision
of the detection. This is achieved by extending a well-known stable-marriage
problem (SMP) and demonstrating how matches between code fragments of different
files can be expressed. A prototype of the proposed approach is provided using
a proper scenario, which shows a noticeable improvement in several features of
clone detection such as scalability and accuracy.Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures, 6 table
How Scale Affects Structure in Java Programs
Many internal software metrics and external quality attributes of Java
programs correlate strongly with program size. This knowledge has been used
pervasively in quantitative studies of software through practices such as
normalization on size metrics. This paper reports size-related super- and
sublinear effects that have not been known before. Findings obtained on a very
large collection of Java programs -- 30,911 projects hosted at Google Code as
of Summer 2011 -- unveils how certain characteristics of programs vary
disproportionately with program size, sometimes even non-monotonically. Many of
the specific parameters of nonlinear relations are reported. This result gives
further insights for the differences of "programming in the small" vs.
"programming in the large." The reported findings carry important consequences
for OO software metrics, and software research in general: metrics that have
been known to correlate with size can now be properly normalized so that all

Product line architecture recovery with outlier filtering in software families: the Apo-Games case study
Software product line (SPL) approach has been widely adopted to achieve systematic reuse in families of software products. Despite its benefits, developing an SPL from scratch requires high up-front investment. Because of that, organizations commonly create product variants with opportunistic reuse approaches (e.g., copy-and-paste or clone-and-own). However, maintenance and evolution of a large number of product variants is a challenging task. In this context, a family of products developed opportunistically is a good starting point to adopt SPLs, known as extractive approach for SPL adoption. One of the initial phases of the extractive approach is the recovery and definition of a product line architecture (PLA) based on existing software variants, to support variant derivation and also to allow the customization according to customersâ needs. The problem of defining a PLA from existing system variants is that some variants can become highly unrelated to their predecessors, known as outlier variants. The inclusion of outlier variants in the PLA recovery leads to additional effort and noise in the common structure and complicates architectural decisions. In this work, we present an automatic approach to identify and filter outlier variants during the recovery and definition of PLAs. Our approach identifies the minimum subset of cross-product architectural information for an effective PLA recovery. To evaluate our approach, we focus on real-world variants of the Apo-Games family. We recover a PLA taking as input 34 Apo-Game variants developed by using opportunistic reuse. The results provided evidence that our automatic approach is able to identify and filter outlier variants, allowing to eliminate exclusive packages and classes without removing the whole variant. Crosscutting, what is and what is not? A Formal definition based on a Crosscutting Pattern
Crosscutting is usually described in terms of scattering and tangling. However, the distinction between these concepts is vague, which could lead to ambiguous statements. Sometimes, precise definitions are required, e.g. for the formal identification of crosscutting concerns. We propose a conceptual framework for formalizing these concepts based on a crosscutting pattern that shows the mapping between elements at two levels, e.g. concerns and representations of concerns. The definitions of the concepts are formalized in terms of linear algebra, and visualized with matrices and matrix operations. In this way, crosscutting can be clearly distinguished from scattering and tangling. Using linear algebra, we demonstrate that our definition generalizes other definitions of crosscutting as described by Masuhara & Kiczales [21] and Tonella and Ceccato [28]. The framework can be applied across several refinement levels assuring traceability of crosscutting concerns. Usability of the framework is illustrated by means of applying it to several areas such as change impact analysis, identification of crosscutting at early phases of software development and in the area of model driven software development
A Parsing Scheme for Finding the Design Pattern and Reducing the Development Cost of Reusable Object Oriented Software
Because of the importance of object oriented methodologies, the research in
developing new measure for object oriented system development is getting
increased focus. The most of the metrics need to find the interactions between
the objects and modules for developing necessary metric and an influential
software measure that is attracting the software developers, designers and
researchers. In this paper a new interactions are defined for object oriented
system. Using these interactions, a parser is developed to analyze the existing
architecture of the software. Within the design model, it is necessary for
design classes to collaborate with one another. However, collaboration should
be kept to an acceptable minimum i.e. better designing practice will introduce
low coupling. If a design model is highly coupled, the system is difficult to
implement, to test and to maintain overtime. In case of enhancing software, we
need to introduce or remove module and in that case coupling is the most
important factor to be considered because unnecessary coupling may make the
system unstable and may cause reduction in the system's performance. So
coupling is thought to be a desirable goal in software construction, leading to
better values for external software qualities such as maintainability,
reusability and so on. To test this hypothesis, a good measure of class
coupling is needed. In this paper, based on the developed tool called Design
Analyzer we propose a methodology to reuse an existing system with the
objective of enhancing an existing Object oriented system keeping the coupling

Some issues in the 'archaeology' of software evolution
During a software project's lifetime, the software goes through many changes, as components are added, removed and modified to fix bugs and add new features. This paper is intended as a lightweight introduction to some of the issues arising from an `archaeological' investigation of software evolution. We use our own work to look at some of the challenges faced, techniques used, findings obtained, and lessons learnt when measuring and visualising the historical changes that happen during the evolution of software
Assessing architectural evolution: A case study

and guidelines, like Lehmanâs software evolution laws and Martinâs design principles, in order to achieve a multi-faceted process and structural assessment of a systemâs architectural evolution. We present a simple structural model with associated historical metrics and
visualizations that could form part of an architectâs dashboard. We perform such an assessment for the Eclipse SDK, as a case study of a large, complex, and long-lived system for which sustained effective architectural evolution is paramount. The twofold aim of checking generic principles on a well-know system is, on the one hand,
to see whether there are certain lessons that could be learned for best practice of architectural evolution, and on the other hand to get more insights about the applicability of such principles. We find that while the Eclipse SDK does follow several of the laws and principles, there are some deviations, and we discuss areas of architectural improvement and limitations of the assessment approach
