Understanding the Benefits of Agile Software Development in Regulated Environments
Agile software development has become increasingly popular in recent years. Applying agile methods, companies expect flexible planning, early delivery of the software product, and a continuous improvement of the development process itself. However, in regulated environments the use of agile development is not yet common practice. In such environments, various regulatory requirements apply which affect the software development process. This paper examines the use of agile software development in the regulated medical device industry and explores reasons for using agile methods although their use is limited. We interviewed agile software development teams in three different companies using semi-structured interviews. Using grounded theory methodology, we identify reasons why companies are using agile methods, even though problems and barriers exist. Our main achievement is the development of four categories, which describe the benefit of agile software development in regulated environments. These categories are master complexity, reduce effort, improve usability, and promote collaboration
Utilising the Software Engineering Methods and Theory framework to critically evaluate software engineering practice in the South African banking industry
A research report submitted to the Faculty of Engineering and The Built Environment of the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg
In partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Science in Engineering
September 2015In recent years, software has become the cornerstone of banking and new business products are
directly dependant on software. The delivery cycles for new features is now related to market share.
This drive to use software as a vehicle for competitive advantage has created an environment in
which software development of new business systems are increasingly on the critical path of many
projects. An organisationâs portfolio of software intensive projects is situated within this complexity
and organisations attempt to mitigate the risks associated with these complexities by implementing
software development processes and practices. A key problem facing the modern bank is how to
define and build a software development process that caters for both the traditional and
increasingly agile genres of software development characteristics in a consistent and manageable
way.
The banks attempt to address this problem through continuous methodology and process
improvements. Comparing and assessing non-standardised software engineering lifecycle models
without a common framework is a complex and subjective task. A standardised language is
important for simplifying the task for developing new methods and practices or for analysing and
documenting existing practices.
The Software Engineering Methods and Theory (SEMAT) initiative has developed a standardised
kernel of essential concepts, together with a language that describes the essence of software
engineering. This kernel, called the Essence, has recently become an Object Management Group
(OMG) standard. The Essence kernel, together with its language, can be used as the underpinning
theory to analyse an existing method and help provide insights that can drive method
enhancements.
The research report proposes a simple, actionable analysis framework to assist organisations to
assess, review and develop their software engineering methods. The core concepts of the
methodology are identified and mapped to the Essence concepts. The governance model of the
Essence is mapped to the governance model of the industry model and a set of practices is identified
and documented in the Essence language. The mapping and resulting analysis can be used to test
the validity of the Essence theory in practice and identify areas for improvement in both the method
and the Essence standard.
The analysis framework has been applied to an operational software development lifecycle of a large
South African bank. A mapping of the Essence concepts to the governance model and method
documented in the lifecycle was completed. This mapping revealed that the Essence is a valid tool
and can be used to describe a method in practice. Furthermore it is useful as an analysis framework
to assess the governance model that manages and measures the progress of an endeavour in the
Bank.
The case study and resulting analysis demonstrate that the Essence standard can be used to analyse
a methodology and identify areas for improvement. The analysis also identified areas for
improvement in the Essence specification
If it ainât broke, donât fix it : An Abductive and Contextual Exploration of Maintenance Deferral
Objective: To create academic insights into how organisations approach and manage the maintenance of vendor-supplied information systems software.
Approach: Three iterations of the Peircean Abduction methodology lead to the identification, conceptualisation, and application of new knowledge in vendor-supplied Information Systems (IS) maintenance deferral by means of undertaking a qualitative multiple-case study. The research goals are achieved through the appropriation and application of theories from Peircean Abduction and Systemic Functional Linguistics.
Research questions: The following abductive statement is created through the application of the Peircean Abduction methodology:
The surprising observation, âsome organisations, having invested in a vendor-supplied IS software solution, defer the implementation of vendor-supplied maintenanceâ, is made; However, if âthe existence of deterrents to maintenance, requiring a trigger event before the implementation of maintenanceâ were true, then âmaintenance deferralâ would be a matter of course. Hence there is a reason to suspect that âthe existence of both deterrents, and of triggersâ is true.
From this abductive statement, three research questions are deduced. The first research question investigates the existence, characteristics and influence of deterrents; the second question investigates the existence, characteristics and influence of triggers. As a consequence of this approach, the final question provides a general understanding of IS maintenance deferral.
Methodology: Following the implementation of a systematic literature review methodology, six themes are identified:
1. an acknowledgement that problems exist when considering vendor-supplied software maintenance;
2. deterrents as a driver in behaviour;
3. the occurrence of tipping-points which require vendor-supplied maintenance to be undertaken;
4. the consequences of deferral;
5. the value of maintenance; and
6. the formalisation of a maintenance lifecycle.
Taking the insights arising from the systematic literature review, a multiple-case study following the pragmatic framework is constructed from data collected interviewing twelve participants across a diverse set of ten organisations.
An abductive approach to this research topic creates opportunities for a comprehensive, well-grounded exploratory contribution to a scarcely investigated research domain.
Major findings: The translation of Peircean abduction to an interpretative context generates a rich and substantive contribution to theory and practice. The existence of both deterrents and triggers are strongly supported, leading to the conclusion that maintenance deferral is a matter of course. The development of a new abductive and Systemic Functional Linguistic model enhances the knowledge of maintenance deferral and allows refinement of historical IS maintenance models. Finally, the application of Systems Thinking situates insights from the application of their mode within their respective organisational environments

Regulated software developmentâ an onerous transformation
Software development within regulated settings is becoming more and more common place. Compliance typically involves saying what you do and doing what you say. However, in some domains, especially safety-critical ones, it needs to be more than simply following the rules, and should be something which everybody in the organisation supports in their daily tasks. This can be difficult to achieve and requires an organisational transformation, but once begun, sets the foundation on which the software development process can evolve
