vSkyConf: Cloud-assisted Multi-party Mobile Video Conferencing
As an important application in the busy world today, mobile video
conferencing facilitates virtual face-to-face communication with friends,
families and colleagues, via their mobile devices on the move. However, how to
provision high-quality, multi-party video conferencing experiences over mobile
devices is still an open challenge. The fundamental reason behind is the lack
of computation and communication capacities on the mobile devices, to scale to
large conferencing sessions. In this paper, we present vSkyConf, a
cloud-assisted mobile video conferencing system to fundamentally improve the
quality and scale of multi-party mobile video conferencing. By novelly
employing a surrogate virtual machine in the cloud for each mobile user, we
allow fully scalable communication among the conference participants via their
surrogates, rather than directly. The surrogates exchange conferencing streams
among each other, transcode the streams to the most appropriate bit rates, and
buffer the streams for the most efficient delivery to the mobile recipients. A
fully decentralized, optimal algorithm is designed to decide the best paths of
streams and the most suitable surrogates for video transcoding along the paths,
such that the limited bandwidth is fully utilized to deliver streams of the
highest possible quality to the mobile recipients. We also carefully tailor a
buffering mechanism on each surrogate to cooperate with optimal stream
distribution. We have implemented vSkyConf based on Amazon EC2 and verified the
excellent performance of our design, as compared to the widely adopted unicast

Perceptual multimedia quality: Implications of an empirical study

Moreover, by ignoring the user-perspective, future distributed multimedia systems risk ignoring accessibility issues, by excluding access for users with abnormal perceptual requirements. This paper presents an extensive examination of distributed multimedia quality. We define a model that considers multimedia quality from three distinct levels: the network, the media- and the content-levels; and two views: the technical- and the user-perspective. By manipulating both technical and user-perspective parameters, we examine the impact on quality perception at the three quality levels identified. Results show that: a significant reduction in frame rate does not proportionally reduce the user's understanding of the presentation, independent of technical parameters; the type of video clip significantly impacts user information assimilation, user level of enjoyment and user perception of quality; the display type impacts user information assimilation and user perception of quality. Finally, to ensure transfer of informational content, network parameter variation should be adapted; to maintain user enjoyment, video content variation should be adapted

This article presents the results of a study that explored the human side of the multimedia experience. We propose a model that assesses quality variation from three distinct levels: the network, the media and the content levels; and from two views: the technical and the user perspective. By facilitating parameter variation at each of the quality levels and from each of the perspectives, we were able to examine their impact on user quality perception. Results show that a significant reduction in frame rate does not proportionally reduce the user's understanding of the presentation independent of technical parameters, that multimedia content type significantly impacts user information assimilation, user level of enjoyment, and user perception of quality, and that the device display type impacts user information assimilation and user perception of quality. Dynamic region of interest transcoding for multipoint video conferencing
This paper presents a region of interest transcoding scheme for multipoint video conferencing to enhance the visual quality. In a multipoint videoconference, usually there are only one or two active conferees at one time which are the regions of interest to the other conferees involved. We propose a Dynamic Sub-Window Skipping (DSWS) scheme to firstly identify the active participants from the multiple incoming encoded video streams by calculating the motion activity of each sub-window, and secondly reduce the frame-rates of the motion inactive participants by skipping these less-important subwindows. The bits saved by the skipping operation are reallocated to the active sub-windows to enhance the regions of interest. We also propose a low-complexity scheme to compose and trace the unavailable motion vectors with a good accuracy in the dropped inactive sub-windows after performing the DSWS. Simulation results show that the proposed methods not only significantly improve the visual quality on the active subwindows without introducing serious visual quality degradation in the inactive ones, but also reduce the computational complexity and avoid whole-frame skipping.
