Structured Review of the Evidence for Effects of Code Duplication on Software Quality
This report presents the detailed steps and results of a structured review of code clone literature. The aim of the review is to investigate the evidence for the claim that code duplication has a negative effect on code changeability. Refactoring, reengineering and evolution: paths to Geant4 uncertainty quantification and performance improvement
Ongoing investigations for the improvement of Geant4 accuracy and
computational performance resulting by refactoring and reengineering parts of
the code are discussed. Issues in refactoring that are specific to the domain
of physics simulation are identified and their impact is elucidated.

An empirical study of evolution of inheritance in Java OSS
Previous studies of Object-Oriented (OO) software have reported avoidance of the inheritance mechanism and cast doubt on the wisdom of âdeepâ inheritance levels. From an evolutionary perspective, the picture is unclear - we still know relatively little about how, over time, changes tend to be applied by developers. Our conjecture is that an inheritance hierarchy will tend to grow âbreadth-wiseâ rather than âdepth-wiseâ. This claim is made on the basis that developers will avoid extending depth in favour of breadth because of the inherent complexity of having to understand the functionality of superclasses. Thus the goal of our study is to investigate this empirically. We conduct an empirical study of seven Java Open-Source Systems (OSSs) over a series of releases to observe the nature and location of changes within the inheritance hierarchies. Results show a strong tendency for classes to be added at levels one and two of the hierarchy (rather than anywhere else). Over 96% of classes added over the course of the versions of all systems were at level 1 or level 2. The results suggest that changes cluster in the shallow levels of a hierarchy; this is relevant for developers since it indicates where remedial activities such as refactoring should be focused

This report presents the results of a structured review of code clone literature. The aim of the review is to assemble a conceptual model of clone-related concepts which helps us to reason about clones. This conceptual model unifies clone concepts from a wide range of literature, so that findings about clones can be compared with each other
A Model-Driven Architecture Approach to the Efficient Identification of Services on Service-oriented Enterprise Architecture
Service-Oriented Enterprise Architecture requires the efficient development of loosely-coupled and interoperable sets of services. Existing design approaches do not always take full advantage of the value and importance of the engineering invested in existing legacy systems. This paper proposes an approach to define the key services from such legacy systems effectively. The approach focuses on identifying these services based on a Model-Driven Architecture approach supported by guidelines over a wide range of possible service types

DeltaImpactFinder: Assessing Semantic Merge Conflicts with Dependency Analysis
In software development, version control systems (VCS) provide branching and
merging support tools. Such tools are popular among developers to concurrently
change a code-base in separate lines and reconcile their changes automatically
afterwards. However, two changes that are correct independently can introduce
bugs when merged together. We call semantic merge conflicts this kind of bugs.
Change impact analysis (CIA) aims at estimating the effects of a change in a
codebase. In this paper, we propose to detect semantic merge conflicts using
CIA. On a merge, DELTAIMPACTFINDER analyzes and compares the impact of a change
in its origin and destination branches. We call the difference between these
two impacts the delta-impact. If the delta-impact is empty, then there is no
indicator of a semantic merge conflict and the merge can continue
automatically. Otherwise, the delta-impact contains what are the sources of
