NASA automatic subject analysis technique for extracting retrievable multi-terms (NASA TERM) system
Current methods for information processing and retrieval used at the NASA Scientific and Technical Information Facility are reviewed. A more cost effective computer aided indexing system is proposed which automatically generates print terms (phrases) from the natural text. Satisfactory print terms can be generated in a primarily automatic manner to produce a thesaurus (NASA TERMS) which extends all the mappings presently applied by indexers, specifies the worth of each posting term in the thesaurus, and indicates the areas of use of the thesaurus entry phrase. These print terms enable the computer to determine which of several terms in a hierarchy is desirable and to differentiate ambiguous terms. Steps in the NASA TERMS algorithm are discussed and the processing of surrogate entry phrases is demonstrated using four previously manually indexed STAR abstracts for comparison. Docking and retrieval mechanism
An engineering prototype docking and retrieval mechanism (DRM) which enables two spacecraft to dock and be structurally joined on-orbit is described. The joining of two spacecraft or payloads on-orbit supports future planned space activities such as payload servicing, deployment and retrieval, and assembly or large space systems. Advantages of the DRM include: it is a nonimpact docking mechanism; does not require impact absorbing mechanisms or attitude stabilization on the target spacecraft; is capable of docking to a spinning spacecraft; and can spin up and deploy a spinning spacecraft or payload
Image Parsing with a Wide Range of Classes and Scene-Level Context
This paper presents a nonparametric scene parsing approach that improves the
overall accuracy, as well as the coverage of foreground classes in scene
images. We first improve the label likelihood estimates at superpixels by
merging likelihood scores from different probabilistic classifiers. This boosts
the classification performance and enriches the representation of
less-represented classes. Our second contribution consists of incorporating
semantic context in the parsing process through global label costs. Our method
does not rely on image retrieval sets but rather assigns a global likelihood
estimate to each label, which is plugged into the overall energy function. We
evaluate our system on two large-scale datasets, SIFTflow and LMSun. We achieve
state-of-the-art performance on the SIFTflow dataset and near-record results on

A Vertical PRF Architecture for Microblog Search
In microblog retrieval, query expansion can be essential to obtain good
search results due to the short size of queries and posts. Since information in
microblogs is highly dynamic, an up-to-date index coupled with pseudo-relevance
feedback (PRF) with an external corpus has a higher chance of retrieving more
relevant documents and improving ranking. In this paper, we focus on the
research question:how can we reduce the query expansion computational cost
while maintaining the same retrieval precision as standard PRF? Therefore, we
propose to accelerate the query expansion step of pseudo-relevance feedback.
The hypothesis is that using an expansion corpus organized into verticals for
expanding the query, will lead to a more efficient query expansion process and
improved retrieval effectiveness. Thus, the proposed query expansion method
uses a distributed search architecture and resource selection algorithms to
provide an efficient query expansion process. Experiments on the TREC Microblog
datasets show that the proposed approach can match or outperform standard PRF
in MAP and NDCG@30, with a computational cost that is three orders of magnitude
