It explores the computational and philosophical rationale behind the uncertainty due to imprecision in the backdrop of traditional mathematical logic. Since uncertainty is present in almost every real-world application, it is essential to develop novel approaches and tools for efficient processing.     State-of-the-Art Report on Systems Analysis Methods for Resolution of Conflicts in Water Resources Management

    Water is an important factor in conflicts among stakeholders at the local, regional, and even international level. Water conflicts have taken many forms, but they almost always arise from the fact that the freshwater resources of the world are not partitioned to match the political borders, nor are they evenly distributed in space and time. Two or more countries share the watersheds of 261 major rivers and nearly half of the land area of the wo rld is in international river basins. Water has been used as a military and political goal. Water has been a weapon of war. Water systems have been targets during the war. A role of systems approach has been investigated in this report as an approach for resolution of conflicts over water. A review of systems approach provides some basic knowledge of tools and techniques as they apply to water management and conflict resolution. Report provides a classification and description of water conflicts by addressing issues of scale, integrated water management and the role of stakeholders. Four large-scale examples are selected to illustrate the application of systems approach to water conflicts: (a) hydropower development in Canada; (b) multipurpose use of Danube river in Europe; (c) international water conflict between USA and Canada; and (d) Aral See in Asia. Water conflict resolution process involves various sources of uncertainty. One section of the report provides some examples of systems tools that can be used to address objective and subjective uncertainties with special emphasis on the utility of the fuzzy set theory. Systems analysis is known to be driven by the development of computer technology. Last section of the report provides one view of the future and systems tools that will be used for water resources management.     Some mathematical aspects of fuzzy systems

    In this work, three topics which are important for the further development of fuzzy systems are chosen to be investigated. First, the mathematical aspects of fuzzy relational equations (FREs) are explored. Solving FREs is one of the most important problems in fuzzy systems. In order to identify the algebraic information of the fuzzy space, two new tools, called fuzzy multiplicative inversion and additive inversion, are proposed. Based on these tools, the relationship among fuzzy vectors in fuzzy space is studied. Analytical expressions of maximum and mean solutions for FREs, and an optimal algorithm for calculating minimum solutions are developed. Second, the possibility of applying functional analysis theory to Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy systems design is investigated. Fuzzy transforms, which are based on the generalised Fourier transform in functional analysis, are proposed. It is demonstrated that, mathematically, a T-S fuzzy model is equivalent to a fuzzy transform. Hence the parameters of a T-S fuzzy system can be identified by solving equations constructed using the inner product between membership functions and a given target function. The functional point of view leads to an insight into the behaviour of a fuzzy system. It provides a theoretical basis for exploring improvements to the efficiency of T-S fuzzy modelling. Third, the mathematical aspects of model-based fuzzy control (MBFC) are investigated. MBFC theory is not suitable for general nonlinear systems, due to an implicit linearity assumption. This assumption limits fuzzy controller design to a special case of linear time-varying systems control. To apply MBFC in general nonlinear control, a new stability criterion for general nonlinear fuzzy system is proposed. The mathematical aspects investigated in this research, provide a systematic guidance on issues such as efficient fuzzy systems modelling, balanced "soft" and "hard" computing in fuzzy system design, and applicability of fuzzy control to general nonlinear systems.     Feasible Form Parameter Design of Complex Ship Hull Form Geometry

    This thesis introduces a new methodology for robust form parameter design of complex hull form geometry via constraint programming, automatic differentiation, interval arithmetic, and truncated hierarchical B- splines. To date, there has been no clearly stated methodology for assuring consistency of general (equality and inequality) constraints across an entire geometric form parameter ship hull design space. In contrast, the method to be given here can be used to produce guaranteed narrowing of the design space, such that infeasible portions are eliminated. Furthermore, we can guarantee that any set of form parameters generated by our method will be self consistent. It is for this reason that we use the title feasible form parameter design. In form parameter design, a design space is represented by a tuple of design parameters which are extended in each design space dimension. In this representation, a single feasible design is a consistent set of real valued parameters, one for every component of the design space tuple. Using the methodology to be given here, we pick out designs which consist of consistent parameters, narrowed to any desired precision up to that of the machine, even for equality constraints. Furthermore, the method is developed to enable the generation of complex hull forms using an extension of the basic rules idea to allow for automated generation of rules networks, plus the use of the truncated hierarchical B-splines, a wavelet-adaptive extension of standard B-splines and hierarchical B-splines. The adaptive resolution methods are employed in order to allow an automated program the freedom to generate complex B-spline representations of the geometry in a robust manner across multiple levels of detail. Thus two complementary objectives are pursued: ensuring feasible starting sets of form parameters, and enabling the generation of complex hull form geometry

    Decision Support Systems

    Decision support systems (DSS) have evolved over the past four decades from theoretical concepts into real world computerized applications. DSS architecture contains three key components: knowledge base, computerized model, and user interface. DSS simulate cognitive decision-making functions of humans based on artificial intelligence methodologies (including expert systems, data mining, machine learning, connectionism, logistical reasoning, etc.) in order to perform decision support functions. The applications of DSS cover many domains, ranging from aviation monitoring, transportation safety, clinical diagnosis, weather forecast, business management to internet search strategy. By combining knowledge bases with inference rules, DSS are able to provide suggestions to end users to improve decisions and outcomes. This book is written as a textbook so that it can be used in formal courses examining decision support systems. It may be used by both undergraduate and graduate students from diverse computer-related fields. It will also be of value to established professionals as a text for self-study or for reference
