AFDM-SCMA: A Promising Waveform for Massive Connectivity over High Mobility Channels
This paper studies the affine frequency division multiplexing (AFDM)-empowered sparse code multiple access (SCMA) system, referred to as AFDM-SCMA, for supporting massive connectivity in high-mobility environments. First, by placing the sparse codewords on the AFDM chirp subcarriers, the input-output (I/O) relation of AFDM-SCMA systems is presented. Next, we delve into the generalized receiver design, chirp rate selection, and error rate performance of the proposed AFDM-SCMA The proposed AFDM-SCMA is shown to provide a general framework and subsume the existing OFDM-SCMA as a special case. Third, for efficient transceiver design, we further propose a class of sparse codebooks for simplifying the I/O relation, referred to as I/O relation-inspired codebook design in this paper. Building upon these codebooks, we propose a novel iterative detection and decoding scheme with linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) estimator for both downlink and uplink channels based on orthogonal approximate message passing principles. Our numerical results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed AFDM-SCMA systems over OFDM-SCMA systems in terms of the error rate performance. We show that the proposed receiver can significantly enhance the error rate performance while reducing the detection complexity
Generalised MBER-based vector precoding design for multiuser transmission
We propose a generalized vector precoding (VP) design based on the minimum bit error rate (MBER) criterion for multiuser transmission in the downlink of a multiuser system, where the base station (BS) equipped with multiple transmitting antennas communicates with single-receiving-antenna mobile station (MS) receivers each having a modulo device. Given the knowledge of the channel state information and the current information symbol vector to be transmitted, our scheme directly generates the effective symbol vector based on the MBER criterion using the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. The proposed PSO-aided generalized MBER VP scheme is shown to outperform the powerful minimum mean-square-error (MMSE) VP and improved MMSE-VP benchmarks, particularly for rank-deficient systems, where the number of BS transmitting antennas is lower than the number of MSs supported
A Generalized Framework on Beamformer Design and CSI Acquisition for Single-Carrier Massive MIMO Systems in Millimeter Wave Channels
In this paper, we establish a general framework on the reduced dimensional
channel state information (CSI) estimation and pre-beamformer design for
frequency-selective massive multiple-input multiple-output MIMO systems
employing single-carrier (SC) modulation in time division duplex (TDD) mode by
exploiting the joint angle-delay domain channel sparsity in millimeter (mm)
wave frequencies. First, based on a generic subspace projection taking the
joint angle-delay power profile and user-grouping into account, the reduced
rank minimum mean square error (RR-MMSE) instantaneous CSI estimator is derived
for spatially correlated wideband MIMO channels. Second, the statistical
pre-beamformer design is considered for frequency-selective SC massive MIMO
channels. We examine the dimension reduction problem and subspace (beamspace)
construction on which the RR-MMSE estimation can be realized as accurately as
possible. Finally, a spatio-temporal domain correlator type reduced rank
channel estimator, as an approximation of the RR-MMSE estimate, is obtained by
carrying out least square (LS) estimation in a proper reduced dimensional
beamspace. It is observed that the proposed techniques show remarkable
robustness to the pilot interference (or contamination) with a significant
reduction in pilot overhead
Unified bit-based probabilistic data association aided MIMO detection for high-order QAM constellations
A unified Bit-based Probabilistic Data Association (B-PDA) detection approach is proposed for Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems employing high-order rectangular Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM). The new approach transforms the symbol detection process of QAM to a bit-based process by introducing a Unified Matrix Representation (UMR) of QAM. Both linear natural and nonlinear binary reflected Gray bit-to-symbol mappings are considered. With the aid of simulation results, we demonstrate that the linear natural mapping based B-PDA approach typically attained an improved detection performance (measured in terms of both Bit Error Ratio (BER) and Symbol Error Ratio (SER)) in comparison to the conventional symbol-based PDA aided MIMO detector, despite its dramatically reduced computational complexity. The only exception is that at low SNRs, the linear natural mapping based B-PDA is slightly inferior in terms of its BER to the conventional symbol-based PDA using binary reflected Gray mapping. Furthermore, the simulation results show that the linear natural mapping based B-PDA MIMO detector may approach the best-case performance provided by the nonlinear binary reflected Gray mapping based B-PDA MIMO detector under ideal conditions. Additionally, the implementation of the B-PDA MIMO detector is shown to be much simpler in the case of the linear natural mapping. Based on these two points, we conclude that in the context of the uncoded B-PDA MIMO detector it is preferable to use the linear natural bit-to-symbol mapping, rather than the nonlinear Gray mapping
Evolving Ensemble Fuzzy Classifier
The concept of ensemble learning offers a promising avenue in learning from
data streams under complex environments because it addresses the bias and
variance dilemma better than its single model counterpart and features a
reconfigurable structure, which is well suited to the given context. While
various extensions of ensemble learning for mining non-stationary data streams
can be found in the literature, most of them are crafted under a static base
classifier and revisits preceding samples in the sliding window for a
retraining step. This feature causes computationally prohibitive complexity and
is not flexible enough to cope with rapidly changing environments. Their
complexities are often demanding because it involves a large collection of
offline classifiers due to the absence of structural complexities reduction
mechanisms and lack of an online feature selection mechanism. A novel evolving
ensemble classifier, namely Parsimonious Ensemble pENsemble, is proposed in
this paper. pENsemble differs from existing architectures in the fact that it
is built upon an evolving classifier from data streams, termed Parsimonious
Classifier pClass. pENsemble is equipped by an ensemble pruning mechanism,
which estimates a localized generalization error of a base classifier. A
dynamic online feature selection scenario is integrated into the pENsemble.
This method allows for dynamic selection and deselection of input features on
the fly. pENsemble adopts a dynamic ensemble structure to output a final
classification decision where it features a novel drift detection scenario to
grow the ensemble structure. The efficacy of the pENsemble has been numerically
demonstrated through rigorous numerical studies with dynamic and evolving data
streams where it delivers the most encouraging performance in attaining a
tradeoff between accuracy and complexity.Comment: this paper has been published by IEEE Transactions on Fuzzy System
mmWave Massive MIMO with Simple RF and Appropriate DSP
There is considerable interest in the combined use of millimeter-wave
(mmwave) frequencies and arrays of massive numbers of antennas (massive MIMO)
for next-generation wireless communications systems. A symbiotic relationship
exists between these two factors: mmwave frequencies allow for densely packed
antenna arrays, and hence massive MIMO can be achieved with a small form
factor; low per-antenna SNR and shadowing can be overcome with a large array
gain; steering narrow beams or nulls with a large array is a good match for the
line-of-sight (LOS) or near-LOS mmwave propagation environments, etc.. However,
the cost and power consumption for standard implementations of massive MIMO
arrays at mmwave frequencies is a significant drawback to rapid adoption and
deployment. In this paper, we examine a number of possible approaches to reduce
cost and power at both the basestation and user terminal, making up for it with
signal processing and additional (cheap) antennas. These approaches include
lowresolution Analog-to-Digital Converters (ADCs), wireless local oscillator
distribution networks, spatial multiplexing and multistreaming instead of
higher-order modulation etc.. We will examine the potential of these approaches
in making mmwave massive MIMO a reality and discuss the requirements in terms
of digital signal processing (DSP).Comment: published in Asilomar 201
