This report summarizes research conducted at the Institute for Computer Applications in Science and Engineering in applied mathematics and computer science during the period April 1, 1993 through September 30, 1993. The major categories of the current ICASE research program are: (1) applied and numerical mathematics, including numerical analysis and algorithm development; (2) theoretical and computational research in fluid mechanics in selected areas of interest to LaRC, including acoustic and combustion; (3) experimental research in transition and turbulence and aerodynamics involving LaRC facilities and scientists; and (4) computer science
The Sixth Copper Mountain Conference on Multigrid Methods, part 2
The Sixth Copper Mountain Conference on Multigrid Methods was held on April 4-9, 1993, at Copper Mountain, Colorado. This book is a collection of many of the papers presented at the conference and so represents the conference proceedings. NASA Langley graciously provided printing of this document so that all of the papers could be presented in a single forum. Each paper was reviewed by a member of the conference organizing committee under the coordination of the editors. The multigrid discipline continues to expand and mature, as is evident from these proceedings. The vibrancy in this field is amply expressed in these important papers, and the collection clearly shows its rapid trend to further diversity and depth

HPCCP/CAS Workshop Proceedings 1998
This publication is a collection of extended abstracts of presentations given at the HPCCP/CAS (High Performance Computing and Communications Program/Computational Aerosciences Project) Workshop held on August 24-26, 1998, at NASA Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, California. The objective of the Workshop was to bring together the aerospace high performance computing community, consisting of airframe and propulsion companies, independent software vendors, university researchers, and government scientists and engineers. The Workshop was sponsored by the HPCCP Office at NASA Ames Research Center. The Workshop consisted of over 40 presentations, including an overview of NASA's High Performance Computing and Communications Program and the Computational Aerosciences Project; ten sessions of papers representative of the high performance computing research conducted within the Program by the aerospace industry, academia, NASA, and other government laboratories; two panel sessions; and a special presentation by Mr. James Bailey

Strategies and tools for the exploitation of massively parallel computer systems
The aim of this thesis is to develop software and strategies for the exploitation of parallel computer hardware, in particular distributed memory systems, and embedding these strategies within a parallelisation tool to allow the automatic generation of these strategies.
The parallelisation of four structured mesh codes using the Computer Aided Parallelisation Tools provided a good initial parallelisation of the codes. However, investigation revealed that simple optimisation of the communications within these codes provided an even better improvement in performance. The dominant factor within the communications was the data transfer time with communication start-up latencies also significant. This was significant throughout the codes but especially in sections of pipelined code where there were large amounts of communication present.
This thesis describes the development and testing of the methods used to increase the performance of these communications by overlapping them with unrelated calculation. This method of overlapping the communications was applied to the exchange of data communications as well as the pipelined communications.
The successful application by hand provided the motivation for these methods to be incorporated and automatically generated within the Computer Aided Parallelisation Tools. These methods were integrated within these tools as an additional stage of the parallelisation. This required a generic algorithm that made use of many of the symbolic algebra tests and symbolic variable manipulation routines within the tools.
The automatic generation of overlapped communications was applied to the four codes previously parallelised as well as a further three codes, one of which was a real world Computational Fluid Dynamics code.
The methods to apply automatic generation of overlapped communications to unstructured mesh codes were also discussed. These methods are similar to those applied to the structured mesh codes and their automation is viewed to be of a similar fashion

Editorâ⠡‰ ¾Ã‚¢s Note: In graduate school, it became too cumbersome for me to look-up equations, theorems,
proofs, and problem solutions from previous courses. I had three boxes full of notes and was going on my
fourth. Due to the need to reference my notes periodically, the notes became more unorganized over time.
Thatâ⠡‰ ¾Ã‚¢s when I decided to typeset them. I have been doing this for over a decade. Later in life, some colleagues
asked if I could make these notes available to others (they were talking about themselves). I did. These
notes can be downloaded for free from the web site http://www.repec.org/ and can be found in the Library
of Congress. Note that the beginning of each chapter lists the professorâ⠡‰ ¾Ã‚¢s name and aï⠡½liation. Additionally,
the course number, the date the course was taken, and the text book are given. The reader may also notice
that I have made more use of the page space than in the previous editions of this manuscript. Hence, the
book is shorter. If this causes the reader problems, then simply copy the proofs onto a blank sheet of paper
