Lived Experiences of Academic Librarians of Color: A Bibliography

    Get PDF
The scholarship in this bibliography offers wisdom for all academic library workers about the experiences of academic librarians of color. My initial purpose in exploring the literature was to combat my own ignorance and to help me be a better colleague to non-white librarians in predominantly white academic institutions. These works also inform diversity, equity, and inclusion programming in academic libraries, especially when primarily theory-based approaches might fall flat for a given audience. I have tried to provide links to open access full-text where possible. Where a book chapter has no open access online, I provide a link to the WorldCat record. While the list is not intended to be comprehensive, I welcome any suggestions for additional sources or open access channels

    Hospital Library Promotion Toolkit

The Hospital Library Subcommittee of the NN/LM NER Regional Advisory Council wanted to determine ways it could advocate for libraries in the region and then to provide products that could be used by other libraries throughout the region. The Hospital Library Promotional Toolkit is designed to aid hospital librarians in promoting their services to hospital administrators and the various communities within their organization. The tools considered for this kit meet three objectives: (1) to assist hospital librarians in their performance and reporting of services to management; (2) to help hospital libraries focus on promotion and marketing to meet specific educational needs of their institution; and, (3) to advance the growth and development of the professional hospital librarian. Table of contents: Sample Mission Statements: Draft your library’s Mission Statement from the sample drafts; samples are categorized by hospital type Sample Goals and Objectives: Draft your library’s goals and objectives from either the short-term (one-year) or long term. Always try to correlate the library’s goals and objectives with those of the institution Tips for Preparing an Annual Report: Use these tips for writing an annual report, demonstrating the value of the library program to hospital administration Sample Annual Report: Draft an annual report of the library function for hospital administration by making use of this sample Research/Literature Search Request Form: Capture the necessary information to perform literature searches and responses to reference questions. Completed form also provides librarian with record of resources used Foot Traffic, Door Count, Library Activities Form: Use these forms to count foot traffic, computer activity, and other types of library tasks Library Statistics and How to Report Library Activities: Use these forms (weekly and monthly) to capture a representative picture of the library\u27s activities; and to report them to senior hospital administrators List of Suggestions for Expanding Use of Library Services: Refer to this list for suggestions to expand the use of library services Library Scope of Service Checklist: Use this checklist as a framework to create a Scope of Service for a hospital library. A “Scope of Service” is a document that concisely describes “who you serve” and “how you serve them”. Hospital administrators may require a Scope of Service for their departments to assist with surveys conducted by The Commission (formerly JCAHO) Selected Bibliography on Promoting Hospital Librarianship: Refer to this selected bibliography for articles and books to help you promote the library, offering suggestions for new services, as well as fulfilling your mission statement, goals and objective

Sociological Novels Reviewed in \u3ci\u3eSociology and Social Research\u3c/i\u3e, 1925-1958

The Bibliographic Record reveals the novel as a distinctive and frequently used format for sociological inquiry and exposition. From 1925 to 1958, the pages of Sociology and Social Research identified and reviewed 140 examples of sociological novels. A bibliography of these novels is provided here, annotated with citations for the reviews in Sociology and Social Research. This “library” of sociological novels is a useful resource for research on American culture, student projects, and (not unimportantly) recreational reading that combines business with pleasure. Under the editorship of Emory S. Bogardus, Sociology and Social Research routinely opened its pages to reviews of alternative forms of sociological expression. Instructively, Bogardus merged his interest in quantitative social measurement with a commitment to literature as a form of sociological exploration. In particular, he explored “social distances” in a variety of literary works, including novels

Africa and the media: changing aspects of communication (a working bibliography)

African Studies Center Working Paper No. 17INTRODUCTION: Each year the annual meeting of the African Studies Association has a general theme, on which a major portion of the panels are presented. The Bibliography Sub-committee of the Archives-Libraries Committee of ASA has unqertaken the project of preparing a working bibliography on the theme of each year's annual meeting. The theme of the 1979 meeting, "Africa and the Media: Changing Aspects of Communication", is broad in its scope, challenging and exciting in its impact, and particularly well-suited for a survey of the literature. There is a great deal written about communication and media in and about Africa, in a variety of sources. This bibliography will attempt to pull some of the available sources together, to indicate continuing sources of information, and to mention projects which are in progress or in planning stages. A working paper presents, in a preliminary format, ideas and information for comment and criticism. It is a starting point for a more finished and polished piece of work. A working bibliography is essentially the same kind of preliminary production, a starting point for further work on the part of individual scholars. Obviously it is not an exhaustive survey of the state of the art. The bibliography will address two aspects of the theme: (1) Africa in United States and World Media and (2) Media in Africa. Types of media to be covered are the press, broadcasting, theatre, cinema, publishing and educational media. The approximate cutoff date was set at 1970. Most citations were noted at Boston University, Library of Congress, Northwestern University, Univensity of Illinois and Yale University. The coordinating editor will attempt to supply location information for interlibrary loan or consultation. Since some citations have been obtained from indexing services, locations in the United States cannet necessarily be guaranteed

Telescope Bibliographies: an Essential Component of Archival Data Management and Operations

Assessing the impact of astronomical facilities rests upon an evaluation of the scientific discoveries which their data have enabled. Telescope bibliographies, which link data products with the literature, provide a way to use bibliometrics as an impact measure for the underlying data. In this paper we argue that the creation and maintenance of telescope bibliographies should be considered an integral part of an observatory's operations. We review the existing tools, services, and workflows which support these curation activities, giving an estimate of the effort and expertise required to maintain an archive-based telescope bibliography.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, to appear in SPIE Astronomical Telescopes and Instrumentation, SPIE Conference Series 844
