Geoscience after IT: Part J. Human requirements that shape the evolving geoscience information system
The geoscience record is constrained by the limitations of human thought and of the technology for handling information. IT can lead us away from the tyranny of older technology, but to find the right path, we need to understand our own limitations. Language, images, data and mathematical models, are tools for expressing and recording our ideas. Backed by intuition, they enable us to think in various modes, to build knowledge from information and create models as artificial views of a real world. Markup languages may accommodate more flexible and better connected records, and the object-oriented approach may help to match IT more closely to our thought processes
Crowdsourcing in Computer Vision
Computer vision systems require large amounts of manually annotated data to
properly learn challenging visual concepts. Crowdsourcing platforms offer an
inexpensive method to capture human knowledge and understanding, for a vast
number of visual perception tasks. In this survey, we describe the types of
annotations computer vision researchers have collected using crowdsourcing, and
how they have ensured that this data is of high quality while annotation effort
is minimized. We begin by discussing data collection on both classic (e.g.,
object recognition) and recent (e.g., visual story-telling) vision tasks. We
then summarize key design decisions for creating effective data collection
interfaces and workflows, and present strategies for intelligently selecting
the most important data instances to annotate. Finally, we conclude with some

Exploring run-time reduction in programming codes via query optimization and caching
Object oriented programming languages raised the level of abstraction by supporting the explicit first class query constructs in the programming codes. These query constructs allow programmers to express operations on collections more abstractly than relying on their realization in loops or through provided libraries. Join optimization techniques from the field of database technology support efficient realizations of such language constructs. However, the problem associated with the existing techniques such as query optimization in Java Query Language (JQL) incurs run time overhead. Besides the programming languages supporting first-class query constructs, the usage of annotations has also increased in the software engineering community recently. Annotations are a common means of providing metadata information to the source code. The object oriented programming languages such as C# provides attributes constraints and Java has its own annotation constructs that allow the developers to include the metadata information in the program codes. This work introduces a series of query optimization approaches to reduce the run time of the programs involving explicit queries over collections. The proposed approaches rely on histograms to estimate the selectivity of the predicates and the joins in order to construct the query plans. The annotations in the source code are also utilized to gather the metadata required for the selectivity estimation of the numerical as well as the string valued predicates and joins in the queries. Several cache heuristics are proposed that effectively cache the results of repeated queries in the program codes. Apache Calcite: A Foundational Framework for Optimized Query Processing Over Heterogeneous Data Sources
Apache Calcite is a foundational software framework that provides query
processing, optimization, and query language support to many popular
open-source data processing systems such as Apache Hive, Apache Storm, Apache
Flink, Druid, and MapD. Calcite's architecture consists of a modular and
extensible query optimizer with hundreds of built-in optimization rules, a
query processor capable of processing a variety of query languages, an adapter
architecture designed for extensibility, and support for heterogeneous data
models and stores (relational, semi-structured, streaming, and geospatial).
This flexible, embeddable, and extensible architecture is what makes Calcite an
attractive choice for adoption in big-data frameworks. It is an active project
that continues to introduce support for the new types of data sources, query
languages, and approaches to query processing and optimization.Comment: SIGMOD'1
Neural Mechanisms for Information Compression by Multiple Alignment, Unification and Search
This article describes how an abstract framework for perception and cognition may be realised in terms of neural mechanisms and neural processing.
This framework — called information compression by multiple alignment, unification and search (ICMAUS) — has been developed in previous research as a generalized model of any system for processing information, either natural or
artificial. It has a range of applications including the analysis and production of natural language, unsupervised inductive learning, recognition of objects and patterns, probabilistic reasoning, and others. The proposals in this article may be seen as an extension and development of
Hebb’s (1949) concept of a ‘cell assembly’.
The article describes how the concept of ‘pattern’ in the ICMAUS framework may be mapped onto a version of the cell
assembly concept and the way in which neural mechanisms may achieve the effect of ‘multiple alignment’ in the ICMAUS framework.
By contrast with the Hebbian concept of a cell assembly, it is proposed here that any one neuron can belong in one assembly and only one assembly. A key feature of present proposals, which is not part of the Hebbian concept, is that any cell assembly may contain ‘references’ or ‘codes’ that serve to identify one or more other cell assemblies. This mechanism allows information to be stored in a compressed form, it provides a robust mechanism by which assemblies may be connected to form hierarchies and other kinds of structure, it means that assemblies can express
abstract concepts, and it provides solutions to some of the other problems associated with cell assemblies.
Drawing on insights derived from the ICMAUS framework, the article also describes how learning may be achieved with neural mechanisms. This concept of learning is significantly different from the Hebbian concept and appears to provide a better account of what we know about human learning
