A hybrid recommendation approach for hierarchical items
Recommender systems aim to recommend items that are likely to be of interest to the user. In many business situations, complex items are described by hierarchical tree structures, which contain rich semantic information. To recommend hierarchical items accurately, the semantic information of the hierarchical tree structures must be considered comprehensively. In this study, a new hybrid recommendation approach for complex hierarchical tree structured items is proposed. In this approach, a comprehensive semantic similarity measure model for hierarchical tree structured items is developed. It is integrated with the traditional item-based collaborative filtering approach to generate recommendations. © 2010 IEEE
Personalized News Recommender using Twitter
Online news reading has become a widely popular way to read news articles from news sources around the globe. With the enormous amount of news articles available, users are easily swamped by information of little interest to them. News recommender systems are one approach to help users find interesting articles to read. News recommender systems present the articles to individual users based on their interests rather than presenting articles in order of their occurrence. In this thesis, we present our research on developing personalized news recommendation system with the help of a popular micro-blogging service Twitter . The news articles are ranked based on the popularity of the article that is identified with the help of the tweets from the Twitter\u27s public timeline. Also, user profiles are built based on the user\u27s interests and the news articles are ranked by matching the characteristics of the user profile. With the help of these two approaches, we present a hybrid news recommendation model that recommends interesting news stories to the user based on their popularity and their relevance to the user profile
A probabilistic model to resolve diversity-accuracy challenge of recommendation systems
Recommendation systems have wide-spread applications in both academia and
industry. Traditionally, performance of recommendation systems has been
measured by their precision. By introducing novelty and diversity as key
qualities in recommender systems, recently increasing attention has been
focused on this topic. Precision and novelty of recommendation are not in the
same direction, and practical systems should make a trade-off between these two
quantities. Thus, it is an important feature of a recommender system to make it
possible to adjust diversity and accuracy of the recommendations by tuning the
model. In this paper, we introduce a probabilistic structure to resolve the
diversity-accuracy dilemma in recommender systems. We propose a hybrid model
with adjustable level of diversity and precision such that one can perform this
by tuning a single parameter. The proposed recommendation model consists of two
models: one for maximization of the accuracy and the other one for
specification of the recommendation list to tastes of users. Our experiments on
two real datasets show the functionality of the model in resolving
accuracy-diversity dilemma and outperformance of the model over other classic
models. The proposed method could be extensively applied to real commercial
systems due to its low computational complexity and significant performance.Comment: 19 pages, 5 figure
Discovering the Impact of Knowledge in Recommender Systems: A Comparative Study
Recommender systems engage user profiles and appropriate filtering techniques
to assist users in finding more relevant information over the large volume of
information. User profiles play an important role in the success of
recommendation process since they model and represent the actual user needs.
However, a comprehensive literature review of recommender systems has
demonstrated no concrete study on the role and impact of knowledge in user
profiling and filtering approache. In this paper, we review the most prominent
recommender systems in the literature and examine the impression of knowledge
extracted from different sources. We then come up with this finding that
semantic information from the user context has substantial impact on the
performance of knowledge based recommender systems. Finally, some new clues for

Recommendation System for News Reader
Recommendation Systems help users to find information and make decisions where they lack the required knowledge to judge a particular product. Also, the information dataset available can be huge and recommendation systems help in filtering this data according to users‟ needs. Recommendation systems can be used in various different ways to facilitate its users with effective information sorting. For a person who loves reading, this paper presents the research and implementation of a Recommendation System for a NewsReader Application using Android Platform. The NewsReader Application proactively recommends news articles as per the reading habits of the user, recorded over a period of time and also recommends the currently trending articles. Recommendation systems and their implementations using various algorithms is the primary area of study for this project. This research paper compares and details popular recommendation algorithms viz. Content based recommendation systems, Collaborative recommendation systems etc. Moreover, it also presents a more efficient Hybrid approach that absorbs the best aspects from both the algorithms mentioned above, while trying to eliminate all the potential drawbacks observed
Hybrid group recommendations for a travel service
Recommendation techniques have proven their usefulness as a tool to cope with the information overload problem in many classical domains such as movies, books, and music. Additional challenges for recommender systems emerge in the domain of tourism such as acquiring metadata and feedback, the sparsity of the rating matrix, user constraints, and the fact that traveling is often a group activity. This paper proposes a recommender system that offers personalized recommendations for travel destinations to individuals and groups. These recommendations are based on the users' rating profile, personal interests, and specific demands for their next destination. The recommendation algorithm is a hybrid approach combining a content-based, collaborative filtering, and knowledge-based solution. For groups of users, such as families or friends, individual recommendations are aggregated into group recommendations, with an additional opportunity for users to give feedback on these group recommendations. A group of test users evaluated the recommender system using a prototype web application. The results prove the usefulness of individual and group recommendations and show that users prefer the hybrid algorithm over each individual technique. This paper demonstrates the added value of various recommendation algorithms in terms of different quality aspects, compared to an unpersonalized list of the most-popular destinations
