    Students' view toward biology as a complex system

    System thinking is found to be a proper approach to address the complex problems of our modern world. However, while it is practiced in various science disciplines, it is not yet embedded proportionately into science education. In this study, through a mixed methods approach, I first examined students' system thinking skills in response to complex problems and then, in a separate study, I investigated how concept map as an assessment tool could assess and enhance students system thinking skills. My results indicated that students tend to use simple causal reasoning to argue about complex biological problems and largely draw on domino causal pattern to show the relationship among biological concepts. I also found that students' system thinking skills improved when they were prompted about complex causalities and scaffolded for making diverse causal relationships. At the end, based on the results of my studies, I developed a teaching framework for complex systems that provides instructors with guidelines on how to embed causal mechanisms and the features of complexity into their teaching practices

    Network Analysis with Stochastic Grammars

    Digital forensics requires significant manual effort to identify items of evidentiary interest from the ever-increasing volume of data in modern computing systems. One of the tasks digital forensic examiners conduct is mentally extracting and constructing insights from unstructured sequences of events. This research assists examiners with the association and individualization analysis processes that make up this task with the development of a Stochastic Context -Free Grammars (SCFG) knowledge representation for digital forensics analysis of computer network traffic. SCFG is leveraged to provide context to the low-level data collected as evidence and to build behavior profiles. Upon discovering patterns, the analyst can begin the association or individualization process to answer criminal investigative questions. Three contributions resulted from this research. First , domain characteristics suitable for SCFG representation were identified and a step -by- step approach to adapt SCFG to novel domains was developed. Second, a novel iterative graph-based method of identifying similarities in context-free grammars was developed to compare behavior patterns represented as grammars. Finally, the SCFG capabilities were demonstrated in performing association and individualization in reducing the suspect pool and reducing the volume of evidence to examine in a computer network traffic analysis use case

    Dreamers may envision our future, but it is the pragmatists who build it. Solve the right problem in the right way, mankind moves forward. Solve the right problem in the wrong way or the wrong problem in the right way, however clever or ingenious the solution, neither credits mankind. Instead, this misfire demonstrates a failure to appreciate a crucial step in pragmatic problem solving: systems integration. The first book to address the underlying premises of systems integration and how to exposit them in a practical and productive manner, Engineering Systems Integration: Theory, Metrics, and Methods looks at the fundamental nature of integration, exposes the subtle premises to achieve integration, and posits a substantial theoretical framework that is both simple and clear. Offering systems managers and systems engineers the framework from which to consider their decisions in light of systems integration metrics, the book isolates two basic questions, 1) Is there a way to express the interplay of human actions and the result of system interactions of a product with its environment?, and 2) Are there methods that combine to improve the integration of systems? The author applies the four axioms of General Systems Theory (holism, decomposition, isomorphism, and models) and explores the domains of history and interpretation to devise a theory of systems integration, develop practical guidance applying the three frameworks, and formulate the mathematical constructs needed for systems integration. The practicalities of integrating parts when we build or analyze systems mandate an analysis and evaluation of existing integrative frameworks of causality and knowledge. Integration is not just a word that describes a best practice, an art, or a single discipline. The act of integrating is an approach, operative in all disciplines, in all we see, in all we do

    The Evolution of First Person Vision Methods: A Survey

    The emergence of new wearable technologies such as action cameras and smart-glasses has increased the interest of computer vision scientists in the First Person perspective. Nowadays, this field is attracting attention and investments of companies aiming to develop commercial devices with First Person Vision recording capabilities. Due to this interest, an increasing demand of methods to process these videos, possibly in real-time, is expected. Current approaches present a particular combinations of different image features and quantitative methods to accomplish specific objectives like object detection, activity recognition, user machine interaction and so on.     Gender, Masculinities and Transition in Conflicted Societies

    This article uses a gender lens to explore how conflict affects men and women differently. It examines issues related to the emergence of certain kinds of “hyper” masculinity in situations of conflict and how such masculinities continue to function in subsequent peace-building attempts. The article argues that a failure to account for and be cognizant of these specific masculinities has a significant effect for women in particular, and, more generally, on the success of the conflict transition process. Finally, we show how using a gender lens could make a difference by considering the specific example of the impact of violent masculinities on disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration programs
