    A Homotopy-Based Method for Optimization of Hybrid High-Low Thrust Trajectories

    Space missions require increasingly more efficient trajectories to provide payload transport and mission goals by means of lowest fuel consumption, a strategic mission design key-point. Recent works demonstrated that the combined (or hybrid) use of chemical and electrical propulsion can give important advantages in terms of fuel consumption, without losing the ability to reach other mission objectives: as an example the Hohmann Spiral Transfer, applied in the case of a transfer to GEO orbit, demonstrated a fuel mass saving between 5-10% of the spacecraft wet mass, whilst satisfying a pre-set boundary constraint for the time of flight. Nevertheless, methods specifically developed for optimizing space trajectories considering the use of hybrid high-low thrust propulsion systems have not been extensively developed, basically because of the intrinsic complexity in the solution of optimal problem equations with existent numerical methods. The study undertaken and presented in this paper develops a numerical strategy for the optimization of hybrid high-low thrust space trajectories. An indirect optimization method has been developed, which makes use of a homotopic approach for numerical convergence improvement. The adoption of a homotopic approach provides a relaxation to the optimal problem, transforming it into a simplest problem to solve in which the optimal problem presents smoother equations and the shooting function acquires an increased convergence radius: the original optimal problem is then reached through a homotopy parameter continuation. Moreover, the use of homotopy can make possible to include a high thrust impulse (treated as velocity discontinuity) to the low thrust optimal control obtained from the indirect method. The impulse magnitude, location and direction are obtained following from a numerical continuation in order to minimize the problem cost function. The initial study carried out in this paper is finally correlated with particular test cases, in order to validate the work developed and to start investigating in which cases the effectiveness of hybrid-thrust propulsion subsists

The global economy is a network of national economies. Computer viruses routinely spread through the Internet. Food-webs, ecosystems, and metabolic pathways can be represented by networks. Energy is distributed through transportation networks in living organisms, man-made infrastructures, and other physical systems. Dynamic behaviors of complex networks, such as stability, periodic oscillation, bifurcation, or even chaos, are ubiquitous in the real world and often reconfigurable. Networks have been studied in the context of dynamical systems in a range of disciplines. However, until recently there has been relatively little work that treats dynamics as a function of network structure, where the states of both the nodes and the edges can change, and the topology of the network itself often evolves in time. Some major problems have not been fully investigated, such as the behavior of stability, synchronization and chaos control for complex networks, as well as their applications in, for example, communication and bioinformatics

    Recent Langley helicopter acoustics contributions

    The helicopter acoustics program at NASA Langley has included technology for elements of noise control ranging from sources of noise to receivers of noise. The scope of Langley contributions for about the last decade is discussed. Specifically, the resolution of two certification noise quantification issues by subjective acoustics research, the development status of the helicopter system noise prediction program ROTONET are reviewed and the highlights from research on blade rotational, broadband, and blade vortex interaction noise sources are presented. Finally, research contributions on helicopter cabin (or interior) noise control are presented. A bibliography of publications from the Langley helicopter acoustics program for the past 10 years is included

    Integrating Preclinical and Clinical Models of Negative Urgency

    Overwhelming evidence suggests that negative urgency is robustly associated with rash, ill-advised behavior, and this trait may hamper attempts to treat patients with substance use disorder. Research applying negative urgency to clinical treatment settings has been limited, in part, due to the absence of an objective, behavioral, and translational model of negative urgency. We suggest that development of such a model will allow for determination of prime neurological and physiological treatment targets, the testing of treatment effectiveness in the preclinical and the clinical laboratory, and, ultimately, improvement in negative-urgency-related treatment response and effectiveness. In the current paper, we review the literature on measurement of negative urgency and discuss limitations of current attempts to assess this trait in human models. Then, we review the limited research on animal models of negative urgency and make suggestions for some promising models that could lead to a translational measurement model. Finally, we discuss the importance of applying objective, behavioral, and translational models of negative urgency, especially those that are easily administered in both animals and humans, to treatment development and testing and make suggestions on necessary future work in this field. Given that negative urgency is a transdiagnostic risk factor that impedes treatment success, the impact of this work could be large in reducing client suffering and societal costs

    Aeroacoustics of a coaxial rotor in level flight

    The aeroacoustic characteristics of a coaxial system with teetering rotors in level forward °ight are com- pared to those of an equivalent articulated single rotor with the same solidity. A lifting line representation of the blade aerodynamics is coupled to Brown's Vorticity Transport Model to simulate the aerodynam- ics of the rotor systems. The acoustic ¯eld is determined using the Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings equation. Acoustic analysis shows that the principal contribution to noise radiated by both the coaxial and equivalent single rotor systems is at the fundamental blade passage frequency, but that the coaxial rotor generates higher sound pressure levels (by 10 dB for the evaluated con¯gurations) than the equivalent single rotor at all °ight speeds. The sources of blade vortex interaction (BVI) noise are investigated and the principal BVI events are identi¯ed. For the coaxial rotor, the most intense impulsive noise is seen to be generated by the inter-rotor BVI on the advancing side of the lower rotor. The impulsive noise that is generated by blade vortex interactions for the equivalent single rotor reduces in amplitude as the strength of BVI events on the rotor decreases with forward speed. Conversely, the BVI noise of the coaxial rotor intensi¯es with increasing °ight speed due to the increasing strength of the interaction between the wake of the upper rotor and the blades of the lower rotor. The impulsive noise due to BVI for the coaxial rotor is found to be higher by 20{35 dB compared to the equivalent single rotor. The overall and impulsive noise characteristics of the coaxial system are found to be weakly sensitive to changes in rotor separation and the relative phasing of the rotors

    Stellar magnetic activity and Star-Planet Interactions (invited review)

    Stellar magnetic activity is an important factor in the formation and evolution of exoplanets. Magnetic phenomena like stellar flares, coronal mass ejections, and high-energy emission affect the exoplanetary atmosphere and its mass loss over time. One major question is whether the magnetic evolution of exoplanet host stars is the same as for stars without planets; tidal and magnetic interactions of a star and its close-in planets may play a role in this. Stellar magnetic activity also shapes our ability to detect exoplanets with different methods in the first place, and therefore we need to understand it properly to derive an accurate estimate of the existing exoplanet population.     Time-and event-driven communication process for networked control systems: A survey

In particular, an urgent need has arisen to understand the effects of communication processes on system performances. Sampling and protocol are two fundamental aspects of a communication process which have attracted a great deal of research attention. Most research focus has been on the analysis and control of dynamical behaviors under certain sampling procedures and communication protocols. In this paper, we aim to survey some recent advances on the analysis and synthesis issues of NCSs with different sampling procedures (time-and event-driven sampling) and protocols (static and dynamic protocols). First, these sampling procedures and protocols are introduced in detail according to their engineering backgrounds as well as dynamic natures. Then, the developments of the stabilization, control, and filtering problems are systematically reviewed and discussed in great detail.
