Learning perception and planning with deep active inference
Active inference is a process theory of the brain that states that all living organisms infer actions in order to minimize their (expected) free energy. However, current experiments are limited to predefined, often discrete, state spaces. In this paper we use recent advances in deep learning to learn the state space and approximate the necessary probability distributions to engage in active inference
An Adaptive Strategy for Active Learning with Smooth Decision Boundary
We present the first adaptive strategy for active learning in the setting of
classification with smooth decision boundary. The problem of adaptivity (to
unknown distributional parameters) has remained opened since the seminal work
of Castro and Nowak (2007), which first established (active learning) rates for
this setting. While some recent advances on this problem establish adaptive
rates in the case of univariate data, adaptivity in the more practical setting
of multivariate data has so far remained elusive. Combining insights from
various recent works, we show that, for the multivariate case, a careful
reduction to univariate-adaptive strategies yield near-optimal rates without
prior knowledge of distributional parameters
Deep Bayesian Active Learning with Image Data
Even though active learning forms an important pillar of machine learning, deep learning tools are not prevalent within it. Deep learning poses several difficulties when used in an active learning setting. First, active learning (AL) methods generally rely on being able to learn and update models from small amounts of data. Recent advances in deep learning, on the other hand, are notorious for their dependence on large amounts of data. Second, many AL acquisition functions rely on model uncertainty, yet deep learning methods rarely represent such model uncertainty. In this paper we combine recent advances in Bayesian deep learning into the active learning framework in a practical way. We develop an active learning framework for high dimensional data, a task which has been extremely challenging so far, with very sparse existing literature. Taking advantage of specialised models such as Bayesian convolutional neural networks, we demonstrate our active learning techniques with image data, obtaining a significant improvement on existing active learning approaches. We demonstrate this on both the MNIST dataset, as well as for skin cancer diagnosis from lesion images (ISIC2016 task).Alan Turing Institute Grant EP/N510129/1

Visually-Enabled Active Deep Learning for (Geo) Text and Image Classification: A Review
This paper investigates recent research on active learning for (geo) text and image classification, with an emphasis on methods that combine visual analytics and/or deep learning. Deep learning has attracted substantial attention across many domains of science and practice, because it can find intricate patterns in big data; but successful application of the methods requires a big set of labeled data. Active learning, which has the potential to address the data labeling challenge, has already had success in geospatial applications such as trajectory classification from movement data and (geo) text and image classification. This review is intended to be particularly relevant for extension of these methods to GISience, to support work in domains such as geographic information retrieval from text and image repositories, interpretation of spatial language, and related geo-semantics challenges. Specifically, to provide a structure for leveraging recent advances, we group the relevant work into five categories: active learning, visual analytics, active learning with visual analytics, active deep learning, plus GIScience and Remote Sensing (RS) using active learning and active deep learning. Each category is exemplified by recent influential work. Based on this framing and our systematic review of key research, we then discuss some of the main challenges of integrating active learning with visual analytics and deep learning, and point out research opportunities from technical and application perspectives-for application-based opportunities, with emphasis on those that address big data with geospatial components
Navigating Occluded Intersections with Autonomous Vehicles using Deep Reinforcement Learning
Providing an efficient strategy to navigate safely through unsignaled
intersections is a difficult task that requires determining the intent of other
drivers. We explore the effectiveness of Deep Reinforcement Learning to handle
intersection problems. Using recent advances in Deep RL, we are able to learn
policies that surpass the performance of a commonly-used heuristic approach in
several metrics including task completion time and goal success rate and have
limited ability to generalize. We then explore a system's ability to learn
active sensing behaviors to enable navigating safely in the case of occlusions.
Our analysis, provides insight into the intersection handling problem, the
solutions learned by the network point out several shortcomings of current
rule-based methods, and the failures of our current deep reinforcement learning
system point to future research directions.Comment: IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA 2018
