A prerequisite for increasing the autonomy of forest machinery is to provide robots with digital situational awareness, including a representation of the surrounding environment and the robot's own state in it. Therefore, this article-based dissertation proposes perception systems for autonomous or semi-autonomous forest machinery as a summary of seven publications. The work consists of several perception methods using machine vision, lidar, inertial sensors, and positioning sensors. The sensors are used together by means of probabilistic sensor fusion. Semi-autonomy is interpreted as a useful intermediary step, situated between current mechanized solutions and full autonomy, to assist the operator. In this work, the perception of the robot's self is achieved through estimation of its orientation and position in the world, the posture of its crane, and the pose of the attached tool. The view around the forest machine is produced with a rotating lidar, which provides approximately equal-density 3D measurements in all directions. Furthermore, a machine vision camera is used for detecting young trees among other vegetation, and sensor fusion of an actuated lidar and machine vision camera is utilized for detection and classification of tree species. In addition, in an operator-controlled semi-autonomous system, the operator requires a functional view of the data around the robot. To achieve this, the thesis proposes the use of an augmented reality interface, which requires measuring the pose of the operator's head-mounted display in the forest machine cabin. Here, this work adopts a sensor fusion solution for a head-mounted camera and inertial sensors. In order to increase the level of automation and productivity of forest machines, the work focuses on scientifically novel solutions that are also adaptable for industrial use in forest machinery. Therefore, all the proposed perception methods seek to address a real existing problem within current forest machinery. All the proposed solutions are implemented in a prototype forest machine and field tested in a forest. The proposed methods include posture measurement of a forestry crane, positioning of a freely hanging forestry crane attachment, attitude estimation of an all-terrain vehicle, positioning a head mounted camera in a forest machine cabin, detection of young trees for point cleaning, classification of tree species, and measurement of surrounding tree stems and the ground surface underneath.

The always best positioned paradigm for mobile indoor applications

In this dissertation, methods for personal positioning in outdoor and indoor environments are investigated. The Always Best Positioned paradigm, which has the goal of providing a preferably consistent self-positioning, will be defined. Furthermore, the localization toolkit LOCATO will be presented, which allows to easily realize positioning systems that follow the paradigm. New algorithms were developed, which particularly address the robustness of positioning systems with respect to the Always Best Positioned paradigm. With the help of this toolkit, three example positioning-systems were implemented, each designed for different applications and requirements: a low-cost system, which can be used in conjunction with user-adaptive public displays, a so-called opportunistic system, which enables positioning with room-level accuracy in any building that provides a WiFi infrastructure, and a high-accuracy system for instrumented environments, which works with active RFID tags and infrared beacons. Furthermore, a new and unique evaluation-method for positioning systems is presented, which uses step-accurate natural walking-traces as ground truth. Finally, six location based services will be presented, which were realized either with the tools provided by LOCATO or with one of the example positioning-systems.

Morphodynamics, sedimentation and sediment dynamics of a gravel beach

The morphodyiiamics of a gravel barrier beadi in Devon, \JK (Slaptou Sands: tau/S 0.15 - 0.25, D50 2 - 8min), was studied with reference to its sedimentology. Three time scales were sampled for nearshore hydrodynamics, intertidal morphologies and sediirientologies. A series of surveys were carried out over individual tidal cycles (samphng every 5 - lOmins for between 6 and 91irs); on •consecutive low tides over half-lunar tidal cycles (1 -2 cross-shore profiles-sampled every 0.5 - Ini, on 2 spring - spring tidal cycles comprising 26 and 24 tides, respectively); and finally eveiy 2 weeks at spring low tide, over 1 calendar year (13-17 profile lines survej'ed and sampled for sediment over 3.25 - 4.251an). In order to further our understanding of gravel beaches, sediment data needs to, be collected at a resolution similar to that of the hydrodynamics. Innovative automatic sediment sizing techniques based on digital images of sediments were therefore developed, and software written, to allow the collection and analysis of high-resolution sediment data. The gi-avel beach step and berm are accretionaiy features, tidally modulated, and evolve under different time scales. A new technique to determine bed mobility from the nearshore, using underwater ^adeo cameras, was devised. Nearsliore sediment transport was suggested as being related to sub-incident wave frequencies. No aspect of morphological change could be found to havea statistically significant association with sedimentological change, but dimensional-reduction techniques did satisfactorily detect association. The lack of co-variance and obvious patterns is stochastic noise, not • parameterisation. Over one year, the barrier underwent asymmetrical rotation over one year, highlighting the importance of alongshore sediment transport processes on this supposedly 'swash aligned' beach. A statistical model based on the log-hj'perbolic distribution of sinface particle sizes was found to be a reasonable predictor of mean net sedimentation over individual tides. Its complicated parameter space could possibly map'onto a simpler plane based on traditional moments. Sediment trend vector models based on sorting alone out-performed a traditional approach. Moments of a surface grain-size'distribution appear to be inappropriate to characterise sedimentological change at time-scales gi-eater than a semi-diurnal tidal cycle. Sub-surface sampling on the intertidal zone on diurnal and semi-lunar time-scales is useful in assessing the dynamics of the step, itself an important mechanism for onshore and offshore net volumetric transport.School of Geograph
