Electricity from photovoltaic solar cells: Flat-Plate Solar Array Project final report. Volume VI: Engineering sciences and reliability
The Flat-Plate Solar Array (FSA) Project, funded by the U.S. Government and managed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, was formed in 1975 to develop the module/array technology needed to attain widespread terrestrial use of photovoltaics by 1985. To accomplish this, the FSA Project established and managed an Industry, University, and Federal Government Team to perform the needed research and development.
This volume of the series of final reports documenting the FSA Project deals with the Project's activities directed at developing the engineering technology base required to achieve modules that meet the functional, safety and reliability requirements of large-scale terrestrial photovoltaic systems applications. These activities included: (1) development of functional, safety, and reliability requirements for such applications; (2) development of the engineering analytical approaches, test techniques, and design solutions required to meet the requirements; (3) synthesis and procurement of candidate designs for test and evaluation; and (4) performance of extensive testing, evaluation, and failure analysis to define design shortfalls and, thus, areas requiring additional research and development.
During the life of the FSA Project, these activities were known by and included a variety of evolving organizational titles: Design and Test, Large-Scale Procurements, Engineering, Engineering Sciences, Operations, Module Performance and Failure Analysis, and at the end of the Project, Reliability and Engineering Sciences.
This volume provides both a summary of the approach and technical outcome of these activities and provides a complete Bibliography (Appendix A) of the published documentation covering the detailed accomplishments and technologies developed

Assessment of industrial applications for fuel cell cogeneration systems
The fuel cell energy systems are designed with and without a utility connection for emergency back-up power. Sale of electricity to the utility during periods of low plant demand is not considered. For each of the three industrial applications, conceptual designs were also developed for conventional utility systems relying on purchased electric power and fossil-fired boilers for steam/hot water. The capital investment for each energy system is estimated. Annual operating costs are also determined for each system. These cost estimates are converted to levelized annual costs by applying appropriate economic factors. The breakeven electricity price that would make fuel cell systems competitive with the conventional systems is plotted as a function of naphtha price. The sensitivity of the breakeven point to capital investment and coal price is also evaluated
Leo space plasma interactions
Photovoltaic arrays interact with the low earth orbit (LEO) space plasma in two fundamentally different ways. One way is the steady collection of current from the plasma onto exposed conductors and semiconductors. The relative currents collected by different parts of the array will then determine the floating potential of the spacecraft. In addition, these steady state collected currents may lead to sputtering or heating of the array by the ions or electrons collected, respectively. The second kind of interaction is the short time scale arc into the space plasma, which may deplete the array and/or spacecraft of stored charge, damage solar cells, and produce EMI. Such arcs only occur at high negative potentials relative to the space plasma potential, and depend on the steady state ion currents being collected. New high voltage solar arrays being incorporated into advanced spacecraft and space platforms may be endangered by these plasma interactions. Recent advances in laboratory testing and current collection modeling promise the capability of controlling, and perhaps even using, these space plasma interactions to enable design of reliable high voltage space power systems. Some of the new results may have an impact on solar cell spacing and/or coverslide design. Planned space flight experiments are necessary to confirm the models of high voltage solar array plasma interactions. Finally, computerized, integrated plasma interactions design tools are being constructed to place plasma interactions models into the hands of the spacecraft designer
Specifications for modelling fuel cell and combustion-based residential cogeneration device within whole-building simulation programs
This document contains the specifications for a series of residential cogeneration device models developed within IEA/ECBCS Annex 42. The devices covered are: solid oxide and polymer exchange membrane fuel cells (SOFC and PEM), and internal combustion and Stirling engine units (ICE and SE). These models have been developed for use within whole-building simulation programs and one or more of the models described herein have been integrated into the following simulation packages: ESP-r, EnergyPlus, TRNSYS and IDA-ICE. The models have been designed to predict the energy performance of cogeneration devices when integrated into a residential building (dwelling). The models account for thermal performance (dynamic thermal performance in the case of the combustion engine models), electrochemical and combustion reactions where appropriate, along with electrical power output. All of the devices are modelled at levels of detail appropriate for whole-building simulation tools
Supercritical Water Gasification: Practical Design Strategies and Operational Challenges for Lab-Scale, Continuous Flow Reactors
Optimizing an industrial-scale supercritical water gasification process
requires detailed knowledge of chemical reaction pathways, rates, and product
yields. Laboratory-scale reactors are employed to develop this knowledge base.
The rationale behind designs and component selection of continuous flow,
laboratory-scale supercritical water gasification reactors is analyzed. Some
design challenges have standard solutions, such as pressurization and
preheating, but issues with solid precipitation and feedstock pretreatment
still present open questions. Strategies for reactant mixing must be evaluated
on a system-by-system basis, depending on feedstock and experimental goals, as
mixing can affect product yields, char formation, and reaction pathways.
In-situ Raman spectroscopic monitoring of reaction chemistry promises to
further fundamental knowledge of gasification and decrease experimentation
time. High-temperature, high-pressure spectroscopy in supercritical water
conditions is performed, however, long-term operation flow cell operation is
challenging. Comparison of Raman spectra for decomposition of formic acid in
the supercritical region and cold section of the reactor demonstrates the
difficulty in performing quantitative spectroscopy in the hot zone. Future
designs and optimization of SCWG reactors should consider well-established
solutions for pressurization, heating, and process monitoring, and effective
strategies for mixing and solids handling for long-term reactor operation and
data collection

Identification and characterization of the dominant thermal resistance in lithium-ion batteries using operando 3-omega sensors
Poor thermal transport within lithium-ion batteries fundamentally limits their performance, safety, and lifetime, in spite of external thermal management systems. All prior efforts to understand the origin of batteries' mysteriously high thermal resistance have been confined to ex situ measurements without understanding the impact of battery operation. Here, we develop a frequency-domain technique that employs sensors capable of measuring spatially resolved intrinsic thermal transport properties within a live battery while it is undergoing cycling. Our results reveal that the poor battery thermal transport is due to high thermal contact resistance between the separator and both electrode layers and worsens as a result of formation cycling, degrading total battery thermal transport by up to 70%. We develop a thermal model of these contact resistances to explain their origin. These contacts account for up to 65% of the total thermal resistance inside the battery, leading to far-reaching consequences for the thermal design of batteries.
