A recurrent neural network applied to optimal motion control of mobile robots with physical constraints
Conventional solutions, such as the conventional recurrent neural network (CRNN) and gradient recurrent neural network (GRNN), for the motion control of mobile robots in the unified framework of recurrent neural network (RNN) are difficult to simultaneously consider both criteria optimization and physical constraints. The limitation of the RNN solution may lead to the damage of mobile robots for exceeding physical constraints during the task execution. To overcome this limitation, this paper proposes a novel inequality and equality constrained optimization RNN (IECORNN) to handle the motion control of mobile robots. Firstly, the real-time motion control problem with both criteria optimization and physical constraints is skillfully converted to a real-time equality system by leveraging the Lagrange multiplier rule. Then, the detailed design process for the proposed IECORNN is presented together with the neural network architecture developed. Afterward, theoretical analyses on the motion control problem conversion equivalence, global stability, and exponential convergence property are rigorously provided. Finally, two numerical simulation verifications and extensive comparisons with other existing RNNs, e.g., the CRNN and the GRNN, based on the mobile robot for two different path-tracking applications sufficiently demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed IECORNN for the real-time motion control of mobile robots with both criteria optimization and physical constraints. This work makes progresses in both theory as well as practice, and fills the vacancy in the unified framework of RNN in motion control of mobile robots
Simulation of Rapidly-Exploring Random Trees in Membrane Computing with P-Lingua and Automatic Programming
Methods based on Rapidly-exploring Random Trees (RRTs) have been
widely used in robotics to solve motion planning problems. On the other hand, in the
membrane computing framework, models based on Enzymatic Numerical P systems
(ENPS) have been applied to robot controllers, but today there is a lack of planning
algorithms based on membrane computing for robotics. With this motivation, we
provide a variant of ENPS called Random Enzymatic Numerical P systems with
Proteins and Shared Memory (RENPSM) addressed to implement RRT algorithms
and we illustrate it by simulating the bidirectional RRT algorithm. This paper is an
extension of [21]a. The software presented in [21] was an ad-hoc simulator, i.e, a tool
for simulating computations of one and only one model that has been hard-coded.
The main contribution of this paper with respect to [21] is the introduction of a novel
solution for membrane computing simulators based on automatic programming. First,
we have extended the P-Lingua syntax –a language to define membrane computing
models– to write RENPSM models. Second, we have implemented a new parser based
on Flex and Bison to read RENPSM models and produce source code in C language
for multicore processors with OpenMP. Finally, additional experiments are presented.Ministerio de EconomĂa, Industria y Competitividad TIN2017-89842-
A layered fuzzy logic controller for nonholonomic car-like robot
A system for real time navigation of a nonholonomic car-like robot in a dynamic environment consists of two layers is described: a Sugeno-type fuzzy motion planner; and a modified proportional navigation based fuzzy controller. The system philosophy is inspired by human routing when moving between obstacles based on visual information including right and left views to identify the next step to the goal. A Sugeno-type fuzzy motion planner of four inputs one output is introduced to give a clear direction to the robot controller. The second stage is a modified proportional navigation based fuzzy controller based on the proportional navigation guidance law and able to optimize the robot's behavior in real time, i.e. to avoid stationary and moving obstacles in its local environment obeying kinematics constraints. The system has an intelligent combination of two behaviors to cope with obstacle avoidance as well as approaching a target using a proportional navigation path. The system was simulated and tested on different environments with various obstacle distributions. The simulation reveals that the system gives good results for various simple environments

Novel fuzzy logic controllers with self-tuning capability
Two controllers which extend the PD+I fuzzy logic controller to deal with the plant having time varying nonlinear dynamics are proposed. The adaptation ability of the first self tuning PD+I fuzzy logic controller (STPD+I_31) is achieved by adjusting the output scaling factor automatically thereby contributing to significant improvement in performance. Second controller (STPD+I_9) is the simplified version of STPD+I_31 which is designed under the imposed constraint that allows only minimum number of rules in the rule bases. The proposed controllers are compared with two classical nonlinear controllers: the pole placement self tuning PID controller and sliding mode controller. All the controllers are applied to the two-links revolute robot for the tracking control. The tracking performance of STPD+I_31 and STPD+I_9 are much better than the pole placement self tuning PID controller during high speed motions while the performance are comparable at low and medium speed. In addition, STPD+I_31 and STPD+I_9 outperform sliding mode controller using same method of comparison study
Intrinsic Motivation and Mental Replay enable Efficient Online Adaptation in Stochastic Recurrent Networks
Autonomous robots need to interact with unknown, unstructured and changing
environments, constantly facing novel challenges. Therefore, continuous online
adaptation for lifelong-learning and the need of sample-efficient mechanisms to
adapt to changes in the environment, the constraints, the tasks, or the robot
itself are crucial. In this work, we propose a novel framework for
probabilistic online motion planning with online adaptation based on a
bio-inspired stochastic recurrent neural network. By using learning signals
which mimic the intrinsic motivation signalcognitive dissonance in addition
with a mental replay strategy to intensify experiences, the stochastic
recurrent network can learn from few physical interactions and adapts to novel
environments in seconds. We evaluate our online planning and adaptation
framework on an anthropomorphic KUKA LWR arm. The rapid online adaptation is
shown by learning unknown workspace constraints sample-efficiently from few
physical interactions while following given way points.Comment: accepted in Neural Network
A novel plasticity rule can explain the development of sensorimotor intelligence
Grounding autonomous behavior in the nervous system is a fundamental
challenge for neuroscience. In particular, the self-organized behavioral
development provides more questions than answers. Are there special functional
units for curiosity, motivation, and creativity? This paper argues that these
features can be grounded in synaptic plasticity itself, without requiring any
higher level constructs. We propose differential extrinsic plasticity (DEP) as
a new synaptic rule for self-learning systems and apply it to a number of
complex robotic systems as a test case. Without specifying any purpose or goal,
seemingly purposeful and adaptive behavior is developed, displaying a certain
level of sensorimotor intelligence. These surprising results require no system
specific modifications of the DEP rule but arise rather from the underlying
mechanism of spontaneous symmetry breaking due to the tight
brain-body-environment coupling. The new synaptic rule is biologically
plausible and it would be an interesting target for a neurobiolocal
investigation. We also argue that this neuronal mechanism may have been a
catalyst in natural evolution.Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures, 7 video
