    Human Activity Recognition and Fall Detection Using Unobtrusive Technologies

    As the population ages, health issues like injurious falls demand more attention. Wearable devices can be used to detect falls. However, despite their commercial success, most wearable devices are obtrusive, and patients generally do not like or may forget to wear them. In this thesis, a monitoring system consisting of two 24×32 thermal array sensors and a millimetre-wave (mmWave) radar sensor was developed to unobtrusively detect locations and recognise human activities such as sitting, standing, walking, lying, and falling. Data were collected by observing healthy young volunteers simulate ten different scenarios. The optimal installation position of the sensors was initially unknown. Therefore, the sensors were mounted on a side wall, a corner, and on the ceiling of the experimental room to allow performance comparison between these sensor placements. Every thermal frame was converted into an image and a set of features was manually extracted or convolutional neural networks (CNNs) were used to automatically extract features. Applying a CNN model on the infrared stereo dataset to recognise five activities (falling plus lying on the floor, lying in bed, sitting on chair, sitting in bed, standing plus walking), overall average accuracy and F1-score were 97.6%, and 0.935, respectively. The scores for detecting falling plus lying on the floor from the remaining activities were 97.9%, and 0.945, respectively. When using radar technology, the generated point clouds were converted into an occupancy grid and a CNN model was used to automatically extract features, or a set of features was manually extracted. Applying several classifiers on the manually extracted features to detect falling plus lying on the floor from the remaining activities, Random Forest (RF) classifier achieved the best results in overhead position (an accuracy of 92.2%, a recall of 0.881, a precision of 0.805, and an F1-score of 0.841). Additionally, the CNN model achieved the best results (an accuracy of 92.3%, a recall of 0.891, a precision of 0.801, and an F1-score of 0.844), in overhead position and slightly outperformed the RF method. Data fusion was performed at a feature level, combining both infrared and radar technologies, however the benefit was not significant. The proposed system was cost, processing time, and space efficient. The system with further development can be utilised as a real-time fall detection system in aged care facilities or at homes of older people

    Autonomous Radar-based Gait Monitoring System

    Features related to gait are fundamental metrics of human motion [1]. Human gait has been shown to be a valuable and feasible clinical marker to determine the risk of physical and mental functional decline [2], [3]. Technologies that detect changes in people’s gait patterns, especially older adults, could support the detection, evaluation, and monitoring of parameters related to changes in mobility, cognition, and frailty. Gait assessment has the potential to be leveraged as a clinical measurement as it is not limited to a specific health care discipline and is a consistent and sensitive test [4]. A wireless technology that uses electromagnetic waves (i.e., radar) to continually measure gait parameters at home or in a hospital without a clinician’s participation has been proposed as a suitable solution [3], [5]. This approach is based on the interaction between electromagnetic waves with humans and how their bodies impact the surrounding and scattered wireless signals. Since this approach uses wireless waves, people do not need to wear or carry a device on their bodies. Additionally, an electromagnetic wave wireless sensor has no privacy issues because there is no video-based camera. This thesis presents the design and testing of a radar-based contactless system that can monitor people’s gait patterns and recognize their activities in a range of indoor environments frequently and accurately. In this thesis, the use of commercially available radars for gait monitoring is investigated, which offers opportunities to implement unobtrusive and contactless gait monitoring and activity recognition. A novel fast and easy-to-implement gait extraction algorithm that enables an individual’s spatiotemporal gait parameter extraction at each gait cycle using a single FMCW (Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave) radar is proposed. The proposed system detects changes in gait that may be the signs of changes in mobility, cognition, and frailty, particularly for older adults in individual’s homes, retirement homes and long-term care facilities retirement homes. One of the straightforward applications for gait monitoring using radars is in corridors and hallways, which are commonly available in most residential homes, retirement, and long-term care homes. However, walls in the hallway have a strong “clutter” impact, creating multipath due to the wide beam of commercially available radar antennas. The multipath reflections could result in an inaccurate gait measurement because gait extraction algorithms employ the assumption that the maximum reflected signals come from the torso of the walking person (rather than indirect reflections or multipath) [6]. To address the challenges of hallway gait monitoring, two approaches were used: (1) a novel signal processing method and (2) modifying the radar antenna using a hyperbolic lens. For the first approach, a novel algorithm based on radar signal processing, unsupervised learning, and a subject detection, association and tracking method is proposed. This proposed algorithm could be paired with any type of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) or single-input multiple-output (SIMO) FMCW radar to capture human gait in a highly cluttered environment without needing radar antenna alteration. The algorithm functionality was validated by capturing spatiotemporal gait values (e.g., speed, step points, step time, step length, and step count) of people walking in a hallway. The preliminary results demonstrate the promising potential of the algorithm to accurately monitor gait in hallways, which increases opportunities for its applications in institutional and home environments. For the second approach, an in-package hyperbola-based lens antenna was designed that can be integrated with a radar module package empowered by the fast and easy-to-implement gait extraction method. The system functionality was successfully validated by capturing the spatiotemporal gait values of people walking in a hallway filled with metallic cabinets. The results achieved in this work pave the way to explore the use of stand-alone radar-based sensors in long hallways for day-to-day long-term monitoring of gait parameters of older adults or other populations. The possibility of the coexistence of multiple walking subjects is high, especially in long-term care facilities where other people, including older adults, might need assistance during walking. GaitRite and wearables are not able to assess multiple people’s gait at the same time using only one device [7], [8]. In this thesis, a novel radar-based algorithm is proposed that is capable of tracking multiple people or extracting walking speed of a participant with the coexistence of other people. To address the problem of tracking and monitoring multiple walking people in a cluttered environment, a novel iterative framework based on unsupervised learning and advanced signal processing was developed and tested to analyze the reflected radio signals and extract walking movements and trajectories in a hallway environment. Advanced algorithms were developed to remove multipath effects or ghosts created due to the interaction between walking subjects and stationary objects, to identify and separate reflected signals of two participants walking at a close distance, and to track multiple subjects over time. This method allows the extraction of walking speed in multiple closely-spaced subjects simultaneously, which is distinct from previous approaches where the speed of only one subject was obtained. The proposed multiple-people gait monitoring was assessed with 22 participants who participated in a bedrest (BR) study conducted at McGill University Health Centre (MUHC). The system functionality also was assessed for in-home applications. In this regard, a cloud-based system is proposed for non-contact, real-time recognition and monitoring of physical activities and walking periods within a domestic environment. The proposed system employs standalone Internet of Things (IoT)-based millimeter wave radar devices and deep learning models to enable autonomous, free-living activity recognition and gait analysis. Range-Doppler maps generated from a dataset of real-life in-home activities are used to train deep learning models. The performance of several deep learning models was evaluated based on accuracy and prediction time, with the gated recurrent network (GRU) model selected for real-time deployment due to its balance of speed and accuracy compared to 2D Convolutional Neural Network Long Short-Term Memory (2D-CNNLSTM) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) models. In addition to recognizing and differentiating various activities and walking periods, the system also records the subject’s activity level over time, washroom use frequency, sleep/sedentary/active/out-of-home durations, current state, and gait parameters. Importantly, the system maintains privacy by not requiring the subject to wear or carry any additional devices

    “It’s not a vacation, it’s your life”. Privileged identities, ageing experiences, and migration projects of British retirees on the coasts of Spain

    [eng] This doctoral thesis investigates identity, ageing, and migration through an intersectional approach to retirement and later life migration from the UK to Spain. Through an in-depth exploration of the experiences of British expatriate retirees in Costa del Sol, Andalusia, and Costa Brava, Catalonia, Spain, the thesis analyzes the generation of experiences between privilege, vulnerability, and precarity, and its contingent effects on the construction of these identity processes. The trend of British retirees moving to Spain has a long-standing history and has been studied in Anthropology, Gerontology, migration studies, and more. Yet, in the period between 2019 and 2020, when this research took place, the confluence of Brexit and the COVID-19 pandemic reinvigorated the field of study. Said geopolitical and sociosanitary shifts put the experiences and identities of British expatriate retirees in question; altering the material foundations upon which their privileged migration life projects were constructed. Like this, creating a unique context where privilege and uncertainty meet in the crux of intersecting experiences of migration and ageing. Through the latter, the thesis contributes to anthropological debates on the contextualized construction of identities between the self and society; on Global North ageing discourses and its’ effects on later life identity projects; and questions the use of migration categories on the ground. Since identity, ageing and migration are polysemic concepts that have mutated over time with their subsequent analytical repercussions, this thesis adopts an intersectional lens that recognizes and develops the debates these terms are involved in, as well as captures the everyday connections between micro experiences and macro structures that evidence relationships of power and the perpetuation of inequalities. This involves the study of labels and their adjacent prejudices and stigmas, exposing how these travel from one sociocultural context to another, while also exploring how feelings of belonging are built abroad. By examining through the seemingly privileged retirement migration experiences of informants, this doctoral thesis exposes the intricacies between privilege, vulnerability, dependence, and precarity through the minutiae of the quotidian, contributing to wider empirical and conceptual debates regarding identity, ageing, and migration.[spa] Esta tesis doctoral investiga la identidad, el envejecimiento y la migración a través de un enfoque interseccional de la gerontomigración y la migración en etapas vitales tardías des del Reino Unido a España. Al explorar en profundidad las experiencias de jubilados expatriados británicos en la Costa del Sol y la Costa Brava, España, esta tesis analiza la generación de experiencias entre el privilegio, la vulnerabilidad, y la precariedad, y sus efectos contingentes sobre la construcción de estos procesos identitarios. El fenómeno de jubilados británicos que migran a España tiene una larga historia y se ha estudiado en antropología, gerontología, estudios de migración y más. No obstante, en el período entre 2019 y 2020 cuando se llevó a cabo esta investigación, la confluencia del Brexit y la pandemia de COVID-19 revitalizó el campo de estudio. Dichos cambios geopolíticos y sociosanitarios cuestionan las experiencias e identidades de los jubilados expatriados británicos; alterando los cimientos materiales sobre los que se construyeron sus privilegiados proyectos de vida migratoria.     ‘Sister, you understand’: stories black African women told of their experiences of being trafficked into/through Ireland for sexual exploitation.

    Human trafficking is a hideous and highly gendered crime affecting primarily women and girls and has attracted the attention of researchers, experts and stakeholders from various fields, who continue to explore the phenomenon through multiple lenses. Although black African women are among the most exploited cohorts worldwide, little attention is paid to the racial dimension of trafficking and these women’s experiences are largely absent from the anti-trafficking discourse. Responding to this gap in awareness, the present study explores the experiences of eight black African migrant women who have been trafficked into/through Ireland for sexual exploitation. Unstructured in-depth narrative interviews and thematic narrative analysis are employed to give voice to the first-hand experiences and opinions of these women. The racial understanding of human trafficking is interrogated, informed by my subjective positioning as a black African, migrant woman, a feminist, an advocate, a support provider and a researcher. The study’s findings confirm that the limited extent of race-centred discourse in human trafficking narratives, particularly around the sexual exploitation of black African women, means that the experiences of such women may not always be understood by western researchers and support providers. The findings also highlight distinctively African aspects of the women’s experiences that, again, may meet relatively little understanding or sympathy in secular European contexts. This lack of understanding and a wider lack of awareness and information has meant that most of the participants have had to navigate their recovery and the rebuilding of their lives outside of the sex trade, without any support or intervention. A need for awareness-raising within migrant communities, including residents of direct provision centres, is highlighted. Race-centred support and interventions for trafficked survivors from black and other ethnic minorities are also needed, to address appropriately issues and harms that might be specific to them. By giving voice and visibility to trafficked black women, the study contributes to a race-centred discourse on human trafficking

    Passive Electric Field Sensing for Ubiquitous and Environmental Perception

    Electric Field Sensing plays an important role in the research branches of Environmental Perception as well as in Ubiquitous Computing. Environmental Perception aims to collect data of the surroundings, while Ubiquitous Computing has the objective of making computing available at any time. This includes the integration of sensors to perceive environmental influences in an unobtrusive way. Electric Field Sensing, also referenced as Capacitive Sensing, is an often used sensing modality in these research fields, for example, to detect the presence of persons or to locate touches and interactions on user interfaces. Electric Field Sensing has a number of advantages over other technologies, such as the fact that Capacitive Sensing does not require direct line-of-sight contact with the object being sensed and that the sensing system can be compact in design. These advantages facilitate high integrability and allow the collection of data as required in Environmental Perception, as well as the invisible incorporation into a user's environment, needed in Ubiquitous Computing. However, disadvantages are often attributed to Capacitive Sensing principles, such as a low sensing range of only a few centimeters and the generation of electric fields, which wastes energy and has several more problems concerning the implementation. As shown in this thesis, this only affects a subset of this sensing technology, namely the subcategory of active capacitive measurements. Therefore, this thesis focuses on the mainly open area of Passive Electric Field Sensing in the context of Ubiquitous Computing and Environmental Perception, as active Capacitive Sensing is an open research field which already gains a lot of attention. The thesis is divided into three main research questions. First, I address the question of whether and how Passive Electric Field Sensing can be made available in a cost-effective and simple manner. To this end, I present various techniques for reducing installation costs and simplifying the handling of these sensor systems. After the question of low-cost applicability, I examine for which applications passive electric field sensor technology is suitable at all. Therefore I present several fields of application where Passive Electric Field Sensing data can be collected. Taking into account the possible fields of application, this work is finally dedicated to the optimization of Passive Electric Field Sensing in these cases of application. For this purpose, different, already known signal processing methods are investigated for their application for Passive Electric Field sensor data. Furthermore, besides these software optimizations, hardware optimizations for the improved use of the technology are presented

    Workers’ spontaneous struggles and resistance in the on-demand economy in China

    This thesis concerns on-demand workers’ struggles and resistance in China and the question, in particular, of how the workers’ choices are structured by the particular legal, social and economic contexts within which they live and work. As a novel form of employment, on-demand work has gained popularity and has attracted a large workforce; however, the regulation of on-demand work is still in its early stages, leaving many workers without adequate labour protections. Many on-demand workers have expressed their grievances and discontent through a variety of individual and collective actions. What remains unclear is why they feel discontent and what factors influence their choice of different forms of struggle and resistance. These factors also give some indication as to how labour laws could be amended to provide effective protection of on-demand workers’ rights and interests. Advocating an ‘economic sociology of law’ approach to the study of labour law, Dukes (2019) suggests that contracting for work ought to be conceived of as social behaviour that is likely economically motivated and, at the same time, influenced by actors’ perceptions of the applicable rules, social norms, and shared understandings of what is standard or fair or reasonable practice in the specific context. Here, this approach is used to analyse and explain how Chinese delivery riders, as the targeted participants in the qualitative research, think of their work and make decisions that are influenced by their economic interests and their perceptions of labour laws, social norms, and shared understandings. The research illustrates that delivery riders have a multifaceted perception of their work. On the one hand, they experience precarious working conditions, disrespect, and discrimination under the bureaucratic and algorithmic control of platforms, worsened by the presence of a duopoly market. Compared to more stable factory jobs, on the other hand, on-demand work provides better opportunities for making money and enjoying flexibility and freedom within the confines of existing labour laws and social and economic circumstances. Individual riders have attempted to improve their working conditions through both formal and informal channels. Due to a number of factors, however, ii including the use of outsourcing by the platforms, the limitations of litigation, the unregulated nature of the platform labour market, unequal bargaining power, the lack of anti-retaliation laws and unreliable labour security administration, there is very little room for riders to voice their concerns. Riders have also attempted to ‘game’ the algorithms and to use social media and mainstream news-reporting but these strategies are not always effective. When there is no good alternative, radical forms of resistance may occur, including self-harm and suicide. On-demand riders have formed occupational communities and have used these to address the challenges collectively, however, the success of their protests can be inhibited by the weak trade union system and non-supportive laws and government attitudes towards collective action. Platforms may try to undermine riders’ solidarity by using various repressive strategies. Moreover, the deteriorating employment environment also hinders collective mobilisation. The current legal, social, and economic context constrains the individual and collective struggles of riders in a wide variety of ways. While they may have a basic awareness of their legal rights, on-demand riders show a strong tendency to prioritise the right to subsistence or the economic conditions necessary for subsistence when attempting to express their discontent. Prioritisation of the right to subsistence or the economic conditions necessary for subsistence is also reflected in policy documents issued by the government in China to regulate on-demand work. To truly improve the working conditions of on-demand workers, it would be necessary to grant them the right to strike with the support of strong trade unions and to improve their rights to social security
