Reusing Ontologies to Enrich Semantically User Content in Web2.0: A Case Study on Folksonomies
Semantic Web and Web2.0 emerged during the past decade promising to achieve new frontiers for the Web. On the one hand, the Semantic Web is an interlinked web of data, supported by ontological semantics and allowing for intelligent applications such as semantic search and integration of heterogeneous content across systems and applications. On the other hand, Web2.0 represents the new technologies and paradigms that revolutionised the user engagement in content creation and introduced novel means towards social interaction. Bridging the gap between Web2.0 and the Semantic Web has been proposed as a means to better manage and interact with the large amounts of user contributed content, which is a new challenge for Web2.0. This thesis focuses on a popular paradigm of Web2.0, folksonomies. In particular, we investigate the semantic enrichment of folksonomy tagspaces by reusing ontologies available in the Semantic Web. We identify the need for methods that automatically apply semantic descriptions to user generated content without requiring user intervention or alteration of the current tagging paradigm. We use an iterative approach in order to identify the characteristics of folksonomies and the attributes of knowledge sources that influence the semantic enrichment of tagspaces. We build on the results of our experimental studies to implement a folksonomy enrichment algorithm, that given an input tagspace, automatically creates a semantic structure that describes the meaning and relations of tags. We introduce measures for the evaluation of enriched tagspaces and finally, we propose a search algorithm that exploits the semantic structures to improve folksonomy search
A lightweight web video model with content and context descriptions for integration with linked data
The rapid increase of video data on the Web has warranted an urgent need for effective representation, management and retrieval of web videos. Recently, many studies have been carried out for ontological representation of videos, either using domain dependent or generic schemas such as MPEG-7, MPEG-4, and COMM. In spite of their extensive coverage and sound theoretical grounding, they are yet to be widely used by users. Two main possible reasons are the complexities involved and a lack of tool support. We propose a lightweight video content model for content-context description and integration. The uniqueness of the model is that it tries to model the emerging social context to describe and interpret the video. Our approach is grounded on exploiting easily extractable evolving contextual metadata and on the availability of existing data on the Web. This enables representational homogeneity and a firm basis for information integration among semantically-enabled data sources. Constitute: The worldâs constitutions to read, search, and compare
Constitutional design and redesign is constant. Over the last 200 years, countries have replaced their constitutions an average of every 19 years and some have amended them almost yearly. A basic problem in the drafting of these documents is the search and analysis of model text deployed in other jurisdictions. Traditionally, this process has been ad hoc and the results suboptimal. As a result, drafters generally lack systematic information about the institutional options and choices available to them. In order to address this informational need, the investigators developed a web application, Constitute [online at http://www.constituteproject.org], with the use of semantic technologies. Constitute provides searchable access to the worldâs constitutions using the conceptualization, texts, and data developed by the Comparative Constitutions Project. An OWL ontology represents 330 ââtopicsââ â e.g. right to health â with which the investigators have tagged relevant provisions of nearly all constitutions in force as of September of 2013. The tagged texts were then converted to an RDF representation using R2RML mappings and Capsentaâs Ultrawrap. The portal implements semantic search features to allow constitutional drafters to read, search, and compare the worldâs constitutions.
