Adaptive Representations for Tracking Breaking News on Twitter
Twitter is often the most up-to-date source for finding and tracking breaking
news stories. Therefore, there is considerable interest in developing filters
for tweet streams in order to track and summarize stories. This is a
non-trivial text analytics task as tweets are short, and standard retrieval
methods often fail as stories evolve over time. In this paper we examine the
effectiveness of adaptive mechanisms for tracking and summarizing breaking news
stories. We evaluate the effectiveness of these mechanisms on a number of
recent news events for which manually curated timelines are available.
Assessments based on ROUGE metrics indicate that an adaptive approaches are

Enriching very large ontologies using the WWW
This paper explores the possibility to exploit text on the world wide web in
order to enrich the concepts in existing ontologies. First, a method to
retrieve documents from the WWW related to a concept is described. These
document collections are used 1) to construct topic signatures (lists of
topically related words) for each concept in WordNet, and 2) to build
hierarchical clusters of the concepts (the word senses) that lexicalize a given
word. The overall goal is to overcome two shortcomings of WordNet: the lack of
topical links among concepts, and the proliferation of senses. Topic signatures
are validated on a word sense disambiguation task with good results, which are
improved when the hierarchical clusters are used.Comment: 6 page
Finding relevant documents using top ranking sentences: an evaluation of two alternative schemes
In this paper we present an evaluation of techniques that are designed to encourage web searchers to interact more with the results of a web search. Two specific techniques are examined: the presentation of sentences that highly match the searcher's query and the use of implicit evidence. Implicit evidence is evidence captured from the searcher's interaction with the retrieval results and is used to automatically update the display. Our evaluation concentrates on the effectiveness and subject perception of these techniques.
