    Quality of service in distributed multimedia systems

    The Unix operating system made a vital contribution to information technology by introducing the notion of composing complicated applications out of simple ones by means of pipes and shell scripts. One day, this will also be possible with multimedia applications. Before this can happen, however, operating systems must support multimedia in as general a way as Unix now supports ordinary applications. Particularly, attention must be paid to allowing the operating-system service to degrade gracefully under heavy loads.\ud This paper presents the Quality-of-Service architecture of the Huygens project. This architecture provides the mechanisms that allow applications to adapt the level of their service to the resources the operating system can make available

In this paper we argue that network parameters that define the network Quality of Service (QoS) must be driven by user-centric parameters such as user expectations and requirements for multimedia transmitted over a network. To this end a mechanism for mapping user-oriented parameters to network QoS parameters is outlined. The paper surveys existing methods for mapping user requirements to the network. An adaptable communication system is implemented to validate the mapping. The architecture adapts to varying network conditions caused by congestion so as to maintain user expectations and requirements. The paper also surveys research in the area of adaptable communications architectures and protocols. Our results show that such a user-biased approach to networking does bring tangible benefits to the user

    Quality of perception to quality of service mapping using a dynamically reconfigurable communication system

    We present an innovative approach for providing en-to-end Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees in a distributed multimedia setting. Quality of Perception (QoP) is a term which encompasses not only a user's satisfaction with the quality of multimedia presentations, but also his/her ability to analyse, synthesise and assimilate the informational content of multimedia displays. The basics of a mapping linking QoP to QoS are then presented and the case for including it in an adaptable protocol is made. A proof of concept implementation based on the Dynamically Reconfigurable Protocol Stacks (DRoPS) project show that such applications can be used to improve QoP, especially in the case of dynamic and complex sequences

    A New Approach to Manage QoS in Distributed Multimedia Systems

    Dealing with network congestion is a criterion used to enhance quality of service (QoS) in distributed multimedia systems. The existing solutions for the problem of network congestion ignore scalability considerations because they maintain a separate classification for each video stream. In this paper, we propose a new method allowing to control QoS provided to clients according to the network congestion, by discarding some frames when needed. The technique proposed, called (m,k)-frame, is scalable with little degradation in application performances. (m,k)-frame method is issued from the notion of (m,k)-firm realtime constraints which means that among k invocations of a task, m invocations must meet their deadline. Our simulation studies show the usefulness of (m,k)-frame method to adapt the QoS to the real conditions in a multimedia application, according to the current system load.     Adaptive flow management of multimedia data with a variable quality of service

    Much of the current research involving the delivery of multimedia data focuses on the need to maintain a constant Quality of Service (QoS) throughout the lifetime of the connection. Delivery of a constant QoS requires that a guaranteed bandwidth is available for the entire connection. Techniques, such as resource reservation, are able to provide for this. These approaches work well across networks that are fairly homogeneous, and which have sufficient resources to sustain the guarantees, but are not currently viable over either heterogeneous or unreliable networks. To cater for the great number of networks (including the Internet) which do not conform to the ideal conditions required by constant Quality of Service mechanisms, this thesis proposes a different approach, that of dynamically adjusting the QoS in response to changing network conditions. Instead of optimizing the Quality of Service, the approach used in this thesis seeks to ensure the delivery of the information, at the best possible quality, as determined by the carrying ability of the poorest segment in the network link. To illustrate and examine this model, a service-adaptive system is described, which allows for the streaming of multimedia audio data across a network using the RealTime Transport Protocol. This application continually adjusts its service requests in response to the current network conditions. A client/server model is outlined whereby the server attempts to provide scalable media content, in this case audio data, to a client at the highest possible Quality of Service. The thesis presents and evaluates a number of renegotiation methods for adjusting the Quality of Service between the client and server. An A djusted QoS renegotiation method algorithm is suggested, which delivers the best possible quality, within an acceptable loss boundary

    A quality of service based framework for dynamic, dependable systems

    There is currently much UK government and industry interest towards the integration of complex computer-based systems, including those in the military domain. These systems can include both mission critical and safety critical applications, and therefore require the dependable communication of data. Current modular military systems requiring such performance guarantees are mostly based on parameters and system states fixed during design time, thus allowing a predictable estimate of performance. These systems can exhibit a limited degree of reconfiguration, but this is typically within the constraints of a predefined set of configurations. The ability to reconfigure systems more dynamically, could lead to further increased flexibility and adaptability, resulting in the better use of existing assets. Current software architecture models that are capable of providing this flexibility, however, tend to lack support for dependable performance. This thesis explores the benefits for the dependability of future dynamic systems, built on a publish/subscribe model, from using Quality of Service (QoS) methods to map application level data communication requirements to available network resources. Through this, original contributions to knowledge are created, including; the proposal of a QoS framework that specifies a way of defining flexible levels of QoS characteristics and their use in the negotiation of network resources, a simulation based evaluation of the QoS framework and specifically the choice of negotiation algorithm used, and a test-bed based feasibility study. Simulation experimentation conducted comparing different methods of QoS negotiation gives a clear indication that the use of the proposed QoS framework and flexible negotiation algorithm can provide a benefit in terms of system utility, resource utilisation, and system stability. The choice of negotiation algorithm has a particularly strong impact on these system properties. The cost of these benefits comes in terms of the processing power and execution time required to reach a decision on the acceptance of a subscriber. It is suggested, given this cost, that when computational resources are limited, a simpler priority based negotiation algorithm should be used. Where system resources are more abundant, however, the flexible negotiation algorithm proposed within the QoS framework can offer further benefits. Through the implementation of the QoS framework within an existing military avionics software architecture based emulator on a test-bed, both the technical challenges that will need to be overcome and, more importantly, the potential viability for the inclusion of the QoS framework have been demonstrated
