    Exact Solution Methods for the kk-item Quadratic Knapsack Problem

    The purpose of this paper is to solve the 0-1 kk-item quadratic knapsack problem (kQKP)(kQKP), a problem of maximizing a quadratic function subject to two linear constraints. We propose an exact method based on semidefinite optimization. The semidefinite relaxation used in our approach includes simple rank one constraints, which can be handled efficiently by interior point methods. Furthermore, we strengthen the relaxation by polyhedral constraints and obtain approximate solutions to this semidefinite problem by applying a bundle method. We review other exact solution methods and compare all these approaches by experimenting with instances of various sizes and densities.Comment: 12 page

    A Lagrangian relaxation approach to the edge-weighted clique problem

    The bb-clique polytope CPbnCP^n_b is the convex hull of the node and edge incidence vectors of all subcliques of size at most bb of a complete graph on nn nodes. Including the Boolean quadric polytope QPnQP^n as a special case and being closely related to the quadratic knapsack polytope, it has received considerable attention in the literature. In particular, the max-cut problem is equivalent with optimizing a linear function over QPnnQP^n_n. The problem of optimizing linear functions over CPbnCP^n_b has so far been approached via heuristic combinatorial algorithms and cutting-plane methods. We study the structure of CPbnCP^n_b in further detail and present a new computational approach to the linear optimization problem based on Lucena's suggestion of integrating cutting planes into a Lagrangian relaxation of an integer programming problem. In particular, we show that the separation problem for tree inequalities becomes polynomial in our Lagrangian framework. Finally, computational results are presented. \u

    Relaxations and Cutting Planes for Linear Programs with Complementarity Constraints

    We study relaxations for linear programs with complementarity constraints, especially instances whose complementary pairs of variables are not independent. Our formulation is based on identifying vertex covers of the conflict graph of the instance and generalizes the extended reformulation-linearization technique of Nguyen, Richard, and Tawarmalani to instances with general complementarity conditions between variables. We demonstrate how to obtain strong cutting planes for our formulation from both the stable set polytope and the boolean quadric polytope associated with a complete bipartite graph. Through an extensive computational study for three types of practical problems, we assess the performance of our proposed linear relaxation and new cutting-planes in terms of the optimality gap closed

    Reformulation and decomposition of integer programs

    In this survey we examine ways to reformulate integer and mixed integer programs. Typically, but not exclusively, one reformulates so as to obtain stronger linear programming relaxations, and hence better bounds for use in a branch-and-bound based algorithm. First we cover in detail reformulations based on decomposition, such as Lagrangean relaxation, Dantzig-Wolfe column generation and the resulting branch-and-price algorithms. This is followed by an examination of Benders’ type algorithms based on projection. Finally we discuss in detail extended formulations involving additional variables that are based on problem structure. These can often be used to provide strengthened a priori formulations.     Speeding up IP-based Algorithms for Constrained Quadratic 0-1 Optimization

    In many practical applications, the task is to optimize a non-linear objective function over the vertices of a well-studied polytope as, e.g., the matching polytope or the travelling salesman polytope (TSP).Prominent examples are the quadratic assignment problem and the quadratic knapsack problem; further applications occur in various areas such as production planning or automatic graph drawing. In order to apply branch-and-cut methods for the exact solution of such problems, the objective function has to be linearized. However, the standard linearization usually leads to very weak relaxations. On the other hand, problem-specific polyhedral studies are often time-consuming.Our goal is the design of general separation routines that can replace detailed polyhedral studies of the resulting polytope and that can be used as a black box. As unconstrained binary quadratic optimization is equivalent to the maximum cut problem, knowledge about cut polytopes can be used in our setting. Other separation routines are inspired by the local cuts that have been developed by Applegate, Bixby, Chvatal and Cook for faster solution of large-scale traveling salesman instances. Finally, we apply quadratic reformulations of the linear constraints as proposed by Helmberg, Rendl and Weismantel for the quadratic knapsack problem. By extensive experiments, we show that a suitable combination of these methods leads to a drastical speedup in the solution of constrained quadratic 0-1 problems. We also discuss possible generalizations of these methods to arbitrary non-linear objective functions

    Efficient Semidefinite Branch-and-Cut for MAP-MRF Inference

    We propose a Branch-and-Cut (B&C) method for solving general MAP-MRF inference problems. The core of our method is a very efficient bounding procedure, which combines scalable semidefinite programming (SDP) and a cutting-plane method for seeking violated constraints. In order to further speed up the computation, several strategies have been exploited, including model reduction, warm start and removal of inactive constraints. We analyze the performance of the proposed method under different settings, and demonstrate that our method either outperforms or performs on par with state-of-the-art approaches. Especially when the connectivities are dense or when the relative magnitudes of the unary costs are low, we achieve the best reported results. Experiments show that the proposed algorithm achieves better approximation than the state-of-the-art methods within a variety of time budgets on challenging non-submodular MAP-MRF inference problems.Comment: 21 page
