Arts and Humanities Research Evaluation: No Metrics Please, Just Data

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to make an explicit case for the use of data with contextual information as evidence in arts and humanities research evaluations rather than systematic metrics. Design/methodology/approach – A survey of the strengths and limitations of citation-based indicators is combined with evidence about existing uses of wider impact data in the arts and humanities, with particular reference to the 2014 UK Research Excellence Framework. Findings – Data are already used as impact evidence in the arts and humanities but this practice should become more widespread. Practical implications – Arts and humanities researchers should be encouraged to think creatively about the kinds of data that they may be able to generate in support of the value of their research and should not rely upon standardised metrics. Originality/value – This paper combines practices emerging in the arts and humanities with research evaluation from a scientometric perspective to generate new recommendations

Uma Análise Cienciométrica de Artigos no Ensino de Química sobre o Tema Forças Intermoleculares

A proposta desse trabalho é traçar um perfil cienciométrico sobre o tema forças intermoleculares, que é um dos pilares da Química, apresentando um panorama do estado do conhecimento. Este estudo se enquadra nas pesquisas de caráter quantitativo, fundamentando-se em perfis realizados e delineados em âmbito cienciométrico, utilizando as leis, indicadores e descritores de pesquisa na área. O caminho metodológico consistiu em consultar, nas bases de dados Google Acadêmico, Scielo e Portal de Periódicos CAPES, pelos descritores Forças Intermoleculares e Interações Intermoleculares. Os artigos encontrados foram filtrados, sendo selecionados por esse recorte apenas aqueles que contém o Qualis na área de Ensino. Para a análise de resultados, utilizou-se a evolução diacrônica do tema proposto pelas Leis de Zipf e Lotka e, através destas, inferir os artigos que mais estão ligados a abordagem do conceito forças intermoleculares, como também explicitar os autores mais produtivos, obras mais citadas e referenciadas. Como resultados obtidos, foram encontrados 29 artigos, nas quais 15 deles estão intimamente ligados à temática, pautando-se pela lei de Lotka. Verificou-se que poucos produzem muitos e muitos produzem poucos. Dois autores por publicação é o preponderante, enquanto a obra “Princípios de química: questionando a vida moderna e o meio ambiente”, de Atkins, foi a mais referenciada nas publicações. Pondera-se também a relevância das pesquisas de caráter cienciométrico para delinear as lacunas de pesquisa quantitativa dentro da área de ensino de química. Sendo assim, esta pesquisa busca contribuir com uma análise cienciométrica de um conceito central da Química, inserido no contexto de ensino, limitando-se a artigos publicados em periódicos da área, disponíveis em formato digital

Caracterización de la producción de artículos científicos depositados en el repositorio institucional Nülan de la Facultad de Ciencias Económicas y Sociales de la Universidad Nacional de Mar del Plata, Argentina, 2014-2022

Este trabajo se propone caracterizar las generalidades de la producción científica del personal de investigación de la Facultad de Ciencias Económicas y Sociales de la Universidad Nacional de Mar del Plata, Argentina, a través de un análisis de los artículos publicados en revistas científicas durante el período 2014-2022. La fuente de datos utilizada es el repositorio digital Nülan, donde se deposita la producción científica y académica institucional. Se obtiene una descripción de la producción de artículos científicos y de las revistas elegidas para publicar los mismos, así como sus características y su presencia en índices y bases de datos. Entre los resultados se visualizan las relaciones de colaboración entre autores e instituciones. Además, se observa una mayoría de revistas de Argentina entre los títulos elegidos para publicar y una preponderante aceptación del modelo de acceso abierto diamante.Fil: Santo Mauro, Patricia. A Qualitative Investigation of Women Academics' Citation Experiences Through a Marketing Lens

This qualitative research aims to provide a unique angle to examine and contribute to a controversial topic—gender gap in citation. Some research has concluded that women tend to cite themselves less than their male colleagues do, while other research has argued that the gender gap in self-citation does not exist at. This study fills the gap by taking an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) approach to explore how women academics experience and make decisions of whether to cite themselves or not. The nature of academia requires academic researchers to create and disseminate knowledge. From a marketing perspective, academics are like entrepreneurs because they must generate and market their own work. By investigating the motivations and tensions around self-citation using in-depth interviews, this study also explores female academics’ self-branding strategies and their current career environment in the academy. This study not only serves academics by investigating a mundane but influential aspect of academic life, but also helps non-academic stakeholders, such as policy makers and academic administrators, by providing the language and framework to understand women’s career strategies

The Perils of Strong Copyright: The American Library Association and Free Culture

The American Library Association has been involved in an ongoing public relations campaign in order to attempt to convince the academic publishing world that the Open Access model is the correct one for academe. However, they have not followed suit with their own publications. This paper is an exploration of this duality, set in a framework of the history of copyright and the Open Access and Free Culture movement. The history of copyright in the United States is presented with special emphasis to its relationship with libraries, and the philosophy of the Free Culture movement is examined in the same light. Specific ALA publications' copyright policies are noted, and compared/contrasted with the public positions that the ALA has taken on Open Access
