    E3D, The Euro3D Visualization Tool I: Description of the program and its capabilities

    We present the first version of E3D, the Euro3D visualization tool for data from integral field spectroscopy. We describe its major characteristics, based on the proposed requirements, the current state of the project, and some planned future upgrades.     Self-Organizing Time Map: An Abstraction of Temporal Multivariate Patterns

    This paper adopts and adapts Kohonen's standard Self-Organizing Map (SOM) for exploratory temporal structure analysis. The Self-Organizing Time Map (SOTM) implements SOM-type learning to one-dimensional arrays for individual time units, preserves the orientation with short-term memory and arranges the arrays in an ascending order of time. The two-dimensional representation of the SOTM attempts thus twofold topology preservation, where the horizontal direction preserves time topology and the vertical direction data topology. This enables discovering the occurrence and exploring the properties of temporal structural changes in data. For representing qualities and properties of SOTMs, we adapt measures and visualizations from the standard SOM paradigm, as well as introduce a measure of temporal structural changes. The functioning of the SOTM, and its visualizations and quality and property measures, are illustrated on artificial toy data. The usefulness of the SOTM in a real-world setting is shown on poverty, welfare and development indicators

    Past, Present, and Future of Simultaneous Localization And Mapping: Towards the Robust-Perception Age

    Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM)consists in the concurrent construction of a model of the environment (the map), and the estimation of the state of the robot moving within it. The SLAM community has made astonishing progress over the last 30 years, enabling large-scale real-world applications, and witnessing a steady transition of this technology to industry. We survey the current state of SLAM. We start by presenting what is now the de-facto standard formulation for SLAM. We then review related work, covering a broad set of topics including robustness and scalability in long-term mapping, metric and semantic representations for mapping, theoretical performance guarantees, active SLAM and exploration, and other new frontiers. This paper simultaneously serves as a position paper and tutorial to those who are users of SLAM. By looking at the published research with a critical eye, we delineate open challenges and new research issues, that still deserve careful scientific investigation. The paper also contains the authors' take on two questions that often animate discussions during robotics conferences: Do robots need SLAM? and Is SLAM solved

    Modelling virtual urban environments

    In this paper, we explore the way in which virtual reality (VR) systems are being broadened to encompass a wide array of virtual worlds, many of which have immediate applicability to understanding urban issues through geocomputation. Wesketch distinctions between immersive, semi-immersive and remote environments in which single and multiple users interact in a variety of ways. We show how suchenvironments might be modelled in terms of ways of navigating within, processes of decision-making which link users to one another, analytic functions that users have to make sense of the environment, and functions through which users can manipulate, change, or design their world. We illustrate these ideas using four exemplars that we have under construction: a multi-user internet GIS for Londonwith extensive links to 3-d, video, text and related media, an exploration of optimal retail location using a semi-immersive visualisation in which experts can explore such problems, a virtual urban world in which remote users as avatars can manipulate urban designs, and an approach to simulating such virtual worlds through morphological modelling based on the digital record of the entire decision-making process through which such worlds are built

Combining scientific visualisations with interactive and intelligent tools can help create a “habitable” information space. Development of such tools remains largely iterative.     The glass ceiling : is it a state of mind?

    Much is written in the literature and press about women having to break through the glass ceiling, but is there indeed any truth in this theory? For some women, working their way up the promotion ladder can be a challenge, but is it really as difficult as it is perceived? It would be naĂŻve to think that all women are as ambitious as to want to break through the glass ceiling, and indeed in certain categories of employment such as advertising and marketing, they do appear to have made their mark, but science, engineering and technology, do not seem to attract females in the same numbers. We would argue that this lack of advancement is not necessarily due to a lack of opportunity. This paper addresses the role of women in science, engineering, and technology, assessing the support mechanisms offered to them to succeed in their chosen occupations. The investigation identifies factors that have led to women achieving senior levels in higher education, business, and government in the UK, thus making it through the glass ceiling. The methodology undertaken in this study includes, desk-based research, analysis of surveys, observations from literature search and surveys, and interviews/case studies of a number of prominent and internationally successful women; and final conclusions. All comprise the three components of the Triple Helix - influence of government through legislation, uptake in academia, and attendant support mechanisms, and impact in industry

    This document defines an Application Tier for the SemsorGrid4Env project. Within the Application Tier we distinguish between Web Applications - which provide a User Interface atop a more traditional Service Oriented Architecture - and Mashups which are driven by a REST API and a Resource Oriented Architecture. A pragmatic boundary is set to enable initial development of Web Applications and Mashups; as the project progresses an evaluation and comparison of the two paradigms may lead to a reassessment of where each can be applied within the project, with the experience gained providing a basis for general guidelines and best practice. Both Web Applications and Mashups are designed and delivered through an iterative user-centric process; requirements generated by the project case studies are a key element of this approach

    A Neural Model of Multidigit Numerical Representation and Comparison

    The Extended Spatial Number Network (ESpaN) is a neural model that simulates processing of high-level numerical stimuli such as multi-digit numbers. The ESpaN model targets the explanation of human psychophysical data, such as error rates and reaction times, about multi-digit (base 10) numerical stimuli, and describes how such a competence can develop through learning. The model suggests how the brain represents and processes an open-ended set of numbers and their regularities, such as the place-value structure, with finite resources in the brain. The model does that by showing how a multi-digit spatial number map forms through interactions with learned semantic categories that symbolize separate digits, as well as place markers like "tens," "hundreds," "thousands," etc. When number-stimuli are presented to the network, they trigger learning of associations between specific semantic categories and corresponding spatial locations of the spatial number map that together build a multi-digit spatial representation. Training of the network is aimed at portraying the process of development of human numerical competence during the first years of a child's life. The earlier SpaN model proposed a spatial number map, which both human and animal possess in their Where cortical processing stream, that can explain many data about analog numerical representation and comparison. The ESpaN model shows how learned cognitive categories in the What cortical processing stream can extend numerical competence to multi-digit numbers with a place-value structure.     Generating Compact Geometric Track-Maps for Train Positioning Applications

    In this paper, we present a method to generate compact geometric track-maps for train-borne localization applications. Therefore, we first give a brief overview on the purpose of track maps in train-positioning applications. It becomes apparent that there are hardly any adequate methods to generate suitable geometric track-maps. This is why we present a novel map generation procedure. It uses an optimization formulation to find the continuous sequence of track geometries that fits the available measurement data best. The optimization is initialized with the results from a localization filter developed in our previous work. The localization filter also provides the required information for shape identification and measurement association. The presented approach will be evaluated on simulated data as well as on real measurements
