Designing intelligent computerâbased simulations: A pragmatic approach
This paper examines the design of intelligent multimedia simulations. A case study is presented which uses an approach based in part on intelligent tutoring system design to integrate formative assessment into the learning of clinical decisionâmaking skills for nursing students. The approach advocated uses a modular design with an integrated intelligent agent within a multimedia simulation. The application was created using an objectâorientated programming language for the multimedia interface (Delphi) and a logicâbased interpreted language (Prolog) to create an expert assessment system. Domain knowledge is also encoded in a Windows help file reducing some of the complexity of the expert system. This approach offers a method for simplifying the production of an intelligent simulation system. The problems developing intelligent tutoring systems are examined and an argument is made for a practical approach to developing intelligent multimedia simulation systems
Design and development of financial applications using ontology-based multi-agent systems
Researchers in the field of finance now use increasingly sophisticated mathematical models that require intelligent software on high performance computing systems. Agent models to date that are designed for financial markets have their knowledge specified through low level programming that require technical expertise in software, not normally available with finance professionals. Hence there is a need for system development methodologies where domain experts and researchers and can specify the behaviour of the agent applications without any knowledge of the underlying agent software. This paper proposes an approach to achieve the above objectives through the use of ontologies that drive the behaviours of agents. This approach contributes towards the building of semantically aware intelligent services, where ontologies are used rather than low level programming to dictate the characteristics of the agent applications. This approach is expected to allow more extensive usage of multi-agent systems in financial business applications
Design of a multi-agent system for distributed voltage regulation
In this paper, an intelligent distributed multi-agent system (MAS) is proposed for the implementation of a novel optimization technique for distributed voltage regulation. The proposed MAS approach controls a large heavily-meshed distribution network which is grouped into small subnetworks using Δ decomposition. The voltage regulation is accomplished by distributed generator (DG) agents, linear programming solver (LPS) agents, network violation detector (NVD) agents, and one Δ decomposition agent. The LPS agent has an embedded control algorithm which optimizes DG generation within a subnetwork once the voltage at particular nodes exceeds the normal operational limits. The subnetworks and their control requirements are achieved through self-organization, which is the novelty of the research. Each intelligent agent has its own knowledge and reasoning logic to plan its own activities. The control actions are coordinated through agent communications within the subnetwork. The agent platform, Presage2, with improved autonomy and agent communication capability, has been used to develop the proposed MAS system and design the agentsâ behaviors
The Multi-Agent Programming Contest: A r\'esum\'e
The Multi-Agent Programming Contest, MAPC, is an annual event organized since
2005 out of Clausthal University of Technology. Its aim is to investigate the
potential of using decentralized, autonomously acting intelligent agents, by
providing a complex scenario to be solved in a competitive environment. For
this we need suitable benchmarks where agent-based systems can shine. We
present previous editions of the contest and also its current scenario and
results from its use in the 2019 MAPC with a special focus on its suitability.
We conclude with lessons learned over the years.Comment: Submitted to the proceedings of the Multi-Agent Programming Contest

PIWeCS: enhancing human/machine agency in an interactive composition system
This paper focuses on the infrastructure and aesthetic approach used in PIWeCS: a Public Space Interactive Web-based Composition System. The concern was to increase the sense of dialogue between human and machine agency in an interactive work by adapting Paine's (2002) notion of a conversational model of interaction as a âcomplex systemâ. The machine implementation of PIWeCS is achieved through integrating intelligent agent programming with MAX/MSP. Human input is through a web infrastructure. The conversation is initiated and continued by participants through arrangements and composition based on short performed samples of traditional New Zealand Maori instruments. The system allows the extension of a composition through the electroacoustic manipulation of the source material
Integrating CLIPS applications into heterogeneous distributed systems
SOCIAL is an advanced, object-oriented development tool for integrating intelligent and conventional applications across heterogeneous hardware and software platforms. SOCIAL defines a family of 'wrapper' objects called agents, which incorporate predefined capabilities for distributed communication and control. Developers embed applications within agents and establish interactions between distributed agents via non-intrusive message-based interfaces. This paper describes a predefined SOCIAL agent that is specialized for integrating C Language Integrated Production System (CLIPS)-based applications. The agent's high-level Application Programming Interface supports bidirectional flow of data, knowledge, and commands to other agents, enabling CLIPS applications to initiate interactions autonomously, and respond to requests and results from heterogeneous remote systems. The design and operation of CLIPS agents are illustrated with two distributed applications that integrate CLIPS-based expert systems with other intelligent systems for isolating and mapping problems in the Space Shuttle Launch Processing System at the NASA Kennedy Space Center
