Code designs for MIMO broadcast channels
Recent information-theoretic results show the optimality of dirty-paper coding (DPC) in achieving the full capacity region of the Gaussian multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) broadcast channel (BC). This paper presents a DPC based code design for BCs. We consider the case in which there is an individual rate/signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) constraint for each user. For a fixed transmitter power, we choose the linear transmit precoding matrix such that the SINRs at users are uniformly maximized, thus ensuring the best bit-error rate performance. We start with Cover's simplest two-user Gaussian BC and present a coding scheme that operates 1.44 dB from the boundary of the capacity region at the rate of one bit per real sample (b/s) for each user. We then extend the coding strategy to a two-user MIMO Gaussian BC with two transmit antennas at the base-station and develop the first limit-approaching code design using nested turbo codes for DPC. At the rate of 1 b/s for each user, our design operates 1.48 dB from the capacity region boundary. We also consider the performance of our scheme over a slow fading BC. For two transmit antennas, simulation results indicate a performance loss of only 1.4 dB, 1.64 dB and 1.99 dB from the theoretical limit in terms of the total transmission power for the two, three and four user case, respectively
Two-Layered Superposition of Broadcast/Multicast and Unicast Signals in Multiuser OFDMA Systems
We study optimal delivery strategies of one common and independent
messages from a source to multiple users in wireless environments. In
particular, two-layered superposition of broadcast/multicast and unicast
signals is considered in a downlink multiuser OFDMA system. In the literature
and industry, the two-layer superposition is often considered as a pragmatic
approach to make a compromise between the simple but suboptimal orthogonal
multiplexing (OM) and the optimal but complex fully-layered non-orthogonal
multiplexing. In this work, we show that only two-layers are necessary to
achieve the maximum sum-rate when the common message has higher priority than
the individual unicast messages, and OM cannot be sum-rate optimal in
general. We develop an algorithm that finds the optimal power allocation over
the two-layers and across the OFDMA radio resources in static channels and a
class of fading channels. Two main use-cases are considered: i) Multicast and
unicast multiplexing when users with uplink capabilities request both
common and independent messages, and ii) broadcast and unicast multiplexing
when the common message targets receive-only devices and users with uplink
capabilities additionally request independent messages. Finally, we develop a
transceiver design for broadcast/multicast and unicast superposition
transmission based on LTE-A-Pro physical layer and show with numerical
evaluations in mobile environments with multipath propagation that the capacity
improvements can be translated into significant practical performance gains
compared to the orthogonal schemes in the 3GPP specifications. We also analyze
the impact of real channel estimation and show that significant gains in terms
of spectral efficiency or coverage area are still available even with
estimation errors and imperfect interference cancellation for the two-layered
superposition system
Joint Unitary Triangularization for MIMO Networks
This work considers communication networks where individual links can be
described as MIMO channels. Unlike orthogonal modulation methods (such as the
singular-value decomposition), we allow interference between sub-channels,
which can be removed by the receivers via successive cancellation. The degrees
of freedom earned by this relaxation are used for obtaining a basis which is
simultaneously good for more than one link. Specifically, we derive necessary
and sufficient conditions for shaping the ratio vector of sub-channel gains of
two broadcast-channel receivers. We then apply this to two scenarios: First, in
digital multicasting we present a practical capacity-achieving scheme which
only uses scalar codes and linear processing. Then, we consider the joint
source-channel problem of transmitting a Gaussian source over a two-user MIMO
channel, where we show the existence of non-trivial cases, where the optimal
distortion pair (which for high signal-to-noise ratios equals the optimal
point-to-point distortions of the individual users) may be achieved by
employing a hybrid digital-analog scheme over the induced equivalent channel.
These scenarios demonstrate the advantage of choosing a modulation basis based
upon multiple links in the network, thus we coin the approach "network
modulation".Comment: Submitted to IEEE Tran. Signal Processing. Revised versio
A High-Diversity Transceiver Design for MISO Broadcast Channels
In this paper, the outage behavior and diversity order of the mixture
transceiver architecture for multiple-input single-output broadcast channels
are analyzed. The mixture scheme groups users with closely-aligned channels and
applies superposition coding and successive interference cancellation decoding
to each group composed of users with closely-aligned channels, while applying
zero-forcing beamforming across semi-orthogonal user groups. In order to enable
such analysis, closed-form lower bounds on the achievable rates of a general
multiple-input single-output broadcast channel with superposition coding and
successive interference cancellation are newly derived. By employing
channel-adaptive user grouping and proper power allocation, which ensures that
the channel subspaces of user groups have angle larger than a certain
threshold, it is shown that the mixture transceiver architecture achieves full
diversity order in multiple-input single-output broadcast channels and
opportunistically increases the multiplexing gain while achieving full
diversity order. Furthermore, the achieved full diversity order is the same as
that of the single-user maximum ratio transmit beamforming. Hence, the mixture
scheme can provide reliable communication under channel fading for
ultra-reliable low latency communication. Numerical results validate our
analysis and show the outage superiority of the mixture scheme over
conventional transceiver designs for multiple-input single-output broadcast
channels.Comment: The inner region is evaluated. The single-group SIC performance is

A digital interface for Gaussian relay and interference networks: Lifting codes from the discrete superposition model
For every Gaussian network, there exists a corresponding deterministic
network called the discrete superposition network. We show that this discrete
superposition network provides a near-optimal digital interface for operating a
class consisting of many Gaussian networks in the sense that any code for the
discrete superposition network can be naturally lifted to a corresponding code
for the Gaussian network, while achieving a rate that is no more than a
constant number of bits lesser than the rate it achieves for the discrete
superposition network. This constant depends only on the number of nodes in the
network and not on the channel gains or SNR. Moreover the capacities of the two
networks are within a constant of each other, again independent of channel
gains and SNR. We show that the class of Gaussian networks for which this
interface property holds includes relay networks with a single
source-destination pair, interference networks, multicast networks, and the
counterparts of these networks with multiple transmit and receive antennas.
The code for the Gaussian relay network can be obtained from any code for the
discrete superposition network simply by pruning it. This lifting scheme
establishes that the superposition model can indeed potentially serve as a
strong surrogate for designing codes for Gaussian relay networks.
We present similar results for the K x K Gaussian interference network, MIMO
Gaussian interference networks, MIMO Gaussian relay networks, and multicast
networks, with the constant gap depending additionally on the number of
antennas in case of MIMO networks.Comment: Final versio
