    Evolving test instances of the Hamiltonian completion problem

    Predicting and comparing algorithm performance on graph instances is challenging for multiple reasons. First, there is usually no standard set of instances to benchmark performance. Second, using existing graph generators results in a restricted spectrum of difficulty and the resulting graphs are usually not diverse enough to draw sound conclusions. That is why recent work proposes a new methodology to generate a diverse set of instances by using an evolutionary algorithm. We can then analyze the resulting graphs and get key insights into which attributes are most related to algorithm performance. We can also fill observed gaps in the instance space in order to generate graphs with previously unseen combinations of features. This methodology is applied to the instance space of the Hamiltonian completion problem using two different solvers, namely the Concorde TSP Solver and a multi-start local search algorithm.Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures, minor revisions in section

    Dynamic Multi-Objective Optimization With jMetal and Spark: a Case Study

    Technologies for Big Data and Data Science are receiving increasing research interest nowadays. This paper introduces the prototyping architecture of a tool aimed to solve Big Data Optimization problems. Our tool combines the jMetal framework for multi-objective optimization with Apache Spark, a technology that is gaining momentum. In particular, we make use of the streaming facilities of Spark to feed an optimization problem with data from different sources. We demonstrate the use of our tool by solving a dynamic bi-objective instance of the Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) based on near real-time traffic data from New York City, which is updated several times per minute. Our experiment shows that both jMetal and Spark can be integrated providing a software platform to deal with dynamic multi-optimization problems.Universidad de Málaga.     MetroSets: Visualizing Sets as Metro Maps

    We propose MetroSets, a new, flexible online tool for visualizing set systems using the metro map metaphor. We model a given set system as a hypergraph H=(V,S)\mathcal{H} = (V, \mathcal{S}), consisting of a set VV of vertices and a set S\mathcal{S}, which contains subsets of VV called hyperedges. Our system then computes a metro map representation of H\mathcal{H}, where each hyperedge EE in S\mathcal{S} corresponds to a metro line and each vertex corresponds to a metro station. Vertices that appear in two or more hyperedges are drawn as interchanges in the metro map, connecting the different sets. MetroSets is based on a modular 4-step pipeline which constructs and optimizes a path-based hypergraph support, which is then drawn and schematized using metro map layout algorithms. We propose and implement multiple algorithms for each step of the MetroSet pipeline and provide a functional prototype with \new{easy-to-use preset configurations.} % many real-world datasets.     Benchmarking Optimization Algorithms for Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problems

    The Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP) originated in the 1950s when algorithms and mathematical approaches were applied to find solutions for routing vehicles. Since then, there has been extensive research in the field of VRPs to solve real-life problems. The process of generating an optimal routing schedule for a VRP is complex due to two reasons. First, VRP is considered to be an NP-Hard problem. Second, there are several constraints involved, such as the number of available vehicles, the vehicle capacities, time-windows for pickup or delivery etc. The main goal for this project was to compare different optimization algorithms for solving Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problems (CVRP). The three specific aims for this project were to (1) survey existing research and identify suitable optimization algorithms for CVRP and (2) implement a work-flow in the Python programming lan- guage, to evaluate their performance, (3) perform different computational experiments on existing CVRP benchmarks. Experiments were conducted by leveraging Google’s OR-Tools library on the well-known benchmarks. Different strategies were evaluated to see if there exists a solution or a better solution than the best-known solutions for these benchmarks. The results show that almost 60% of the problems in the benchmarks have a better solution than the current best-known solution. The second finding of this project is that there is not one strategy which can provide the best solution for all types of CVRPs

    Focus+Context via Snaking Paths

    Focus+context visualizations reveal specific structures in high detail while effectively depicting its surroundings, often relying on transitions between the two areas to provide context. We present an approach to generate focus+context visualizations depicting cylindrical structures along snaking paths that enables the structures themselves to become the transitions and focal areas, simultaneously. A method to automatically create a snaking path through space by applying a path finding algorithm is presented. A 3D curve is created based on the 2D snaking path. We describe a process to deform cylindrical structures in segmented volumetric models to match the curve and provide preliminary geometric models as templates for artists to build upon. Structures are discovered using our constrained volumetric sculpting method that enables removal of occluding material while leaving them intact. We find the resulting visualizations effectively mimic a set of motivating illustrations and discuss some limitations of the automatic approach
