Network emulation focusing on QoS-Oriented satellite communication
This chapter proposes network emulation basics and a complete case study of QoS-oriented Satellite Communication
Distributed control in virtualized networks
The increasing number of the Internet connected devices requires novel solutions to control the next generation network resources. The cooperation between the Software Defined Network (SDN) and the Network Function Virtualization (NFV) seems to be a promising technology paradigm. The bottleneck of current SDN/NFV implementations is the use of a centralized controller. In this paper, different scenarios to identify the pro and cons of a distributed control-plane were investigated. We implemented a prototypal framework to benchmark different centralized and distributed approaches. The test results have been critically analyzed and related considerations and recommendations have been reported. The outcome of our research influenced the control plane design of the following European R&D projects: PLATINO, FI-WARE and T-NOVA
Adaptive stochastic radio access selection scheme for cellular-WLAN heterogeneous communication systems
This study proposes a novel adaptive stochastic radio access selection scheme for mobile users in heterogeneous cellular-wireless local area network (WLAN) systems. In this scheme, a mobile user located in dual coverage area randomly selects WLAN with probability of ω when there is a need for downloading a chunk of data. The value of ω is optimised according to the status of both networks in terms of network load and signal quality of both cellular and WLAN networks. An analytical model based on continuous time Markov chain is proposed to optimise the value of ω and compute the performance of proposed scheme in terms of energy efficiency, throughput, and call blocking probability. Both analytical and simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed scheme compared with the mainstream network selection schemes: namely, WLAN-first and load balancing
Pre-Congestion Notification (PCN) Architecture
This document describes a general architecture for flow admission and termination based on pre-congestion information in order to protect the quality of service of established, inelastic flows within a single Diffserv domain.\u
VoIP Call Admission Control in WLANs in Presence of Elastic Traffic
VoIP service over WLAN networks is a promising alternative to provide mobile voice communications. However, several performance problems appear due to i) heavy protocol overheads, ii) unfairness and asymmetry between the uplink and downlink flows, and iii) the coexistence with other traffic flows. This paper addresses the performance of VoIP communications with simultaneous presence of bidirectional TCP traffic, and shows how the presence of elastic flows drastically reduces the capacity of the system. To solve this limitation a simple solution is proposed using an adaptive Admission and Rate Control algorithm which tunes the BEB (Binary Exponential Backoff) parameters. Analytical results are obtained by using an IEEE 802.11e user centric queuing model based on a bulk service M=G[1;B]=1=K queue, which is able to capture the main dynamics of the EDCA-based traffic differentiation parameters (AIFS, BEB and TXOP). The results show that the improvement achieved by our scheme on the overall VoIP performance is significant
Flow Level QoE of Video Streaming in Wireless Networks
The Quality of Experience (QoE) of streaming service is often degraded by
frequent playback interruptions. To mitigate the interruptions, the media
player prefetches streaming contents before starting playback, at a cost of
delay. We study the QoE of streaming from the perspective of flow dynamics.
First, a framework is developed for QoE when streaming users join the network
randomly and leave after downloading completion. We compute the distribution of
prefetching delay using partial differential equations (PDEs), and the
probability generating function of playout buffer starvations using ordinary
differential equations (ODEs) for CBR streaming. Second, we extend our
framework to characterize the throughput variation caused by opportunistic
scheduling at the base station, and the playback variation of VBR streaming.
Our study reveals that the flow dynamics is the fundamental reason of playback
starvation. The QoE of streaming service is dominated by the first moments such
as the average throughput of opportunistic scheduling and the mean playback
rate. While the variances of throughput and playback rate have very limited
impact on starvation behavior.Comment: 14 page
A machine learning approach to 5G infrastructure market optimization
It is now commonly agreed that future 5G Networks will build upon the network slicing concept. The ability to provide virtual, logically independent "slices" of the network will also have an impact on the models that will sustain the business ecosystem. Network slicing will open the door to new players: the infrastructure provider, which is the owner of the infrastructure, and the tenants, which may acquire a network slice from the infrastructure provider to deliver a specific service to their customers. In this new context, how to correctly handle resource allocation among tenants and how to maximize the monetization of the infrastructure become fundamental problems that need to be solved. In this paper, we address this issue by designing a network slice admission control algorithm that (i) autonomously learns the best acceptance policy while (ii) it ensures that the service guarantees provided to tenants are always satisfied. The contributions of this paper include: (i) an analytical model for the admissibility region of a network slicing-capable 5G Network, (ii) the analysis of the system (modeled as a Semi-Markov Decision Process) and the optimization of the infrastructure providers revenue, and (iii) the design of a machine learning algorithm that can be deployed in practical settings and achieves close to optimal performance. The work of University Carlos III of Madrid was supported by the H2020 5G-MoNArch project (Grant Agreement No. 761445) and the 5GCity project of the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (TEC2016-76795-C6-3-R).
