ElfStore: A Resilient Data Storage Service for Federated Edge and Fog Resources
Edge and fog computing have grown popular as IoT deployments become
wide-spread. While application composition and scheduling on such resources are
being explored, there exists a gap in a distributed data storage service on the
edge and fog layer, instead depending solely on the cloud for data persistence.
Such a service should reliably store and manage data on fog and edge devices,
even in the presence of failures, and offer transparent discovery and access to
data for use by edge computing applications. Here, we present Elfstore, a
first-of-its-kind edge-local federated store for streams of data blocks. It
uses reliable fog devices as a super-peer overlay to monitor the edge
resources, offers federated metadata indexing using Bloom filters, locates data
within 2-hops, and maintains approximate global statistics about the
reliability and storage capacity of edges. Edges host the actual data blocks,
and we use a unique differential replication scheme to select edges on which to
replicate blocks, to guarantee a minimum reliability and to balance storage
utilization. Our experiments on two IoT virtual deployments with 20 and 272
devices show that ElfStore has low overheads, is bound only by the network
bandwidth, has scalable performance, and offers tunable resilience.Comment: 24 pages, 14 figures, To appear in IEEE International Conference on

A Practical Searchable Symmetric Encryption Scheme for Smart Grid Data
Outsourcing data storage to the remote cloud can be an economical solution to
enhance data management in the smart grid ecosystem. To protect the privacy of
data, the utility company may choose to encrypt the data before uploading them
to the cloud. However, while encryption provides confidentiality to data, it
also sacrifices the data owners' ability to query a special segment in their
data. Searchable symmetric encryption is a technology that enables users to
store documents in ciphertext form while keeping the functionality to search
keywords in the documents. However, most state-of-the-art SSE algorithms are
only focusing on general document storage, which may become unsuitable for
smart grid applications. In this paper, we propose a simple, practical SSE
scheme that aims to protect the privacy of data generated in the smart grid.
Our scheme achieves high space complexity with small information disclosure
that was acceptable for practical smart grid application. We also implement a
prototype over the statistical data of advanced meter infrastructure to show
the effectiveness of our approach
Forward Private Searchable Symmetric Encryption with Optimized I/O Efficiency
Recently, several practical attacks raised serious concerns over the security
of searchable encryption. The attacks have brought emphasis on forward privacy,
which is the key concept behind solutions to the adaptive leakage-exploiting
attacks, and will very likely to become mandatory in the design of new
searchable encryption schemes. For a long time, forward privacy implies
inefficiency and thus most existing searchable encryption schemes do not
support it. Very recently, Bost (CCS 2016) showed that forward privacy can be
obtained without inducing a large communication overhead. However, Bost's
scheme is constructed with a relatively inefficient public key cryptographic
primitive, and has a poor I/O performance. Both of the deficiencies
significantly hinder the practical efficiency of the scheme, and prevent it
from scaling to large data settings. To address the problems, we first present
FAST, which achieves forward privacy and the same communication efficiency as
Bost's scheme, but uses only symmetric cryptographic primitives. We then
present FASTIO, which retains all good properties of FAST, and further improves
I/O efficiency. We implemented the two schemes and compared their performance
with Bost's scheme. The experiment results show that both our schemes are
highly efficient, and FASTIO achieves a much better scalability due to its
optimized I/O
Tree-Chain: A Fast Lightweight Consensus Algorithm for IoT Applications
Blockchain has received tremendous attention in non-monetary applications
including the Internet of Things (IoT) due to its salient features including
decentralization, security, auditability, and anonymity. Most conventional
blockchains rely on computationally expensive consensus algorithms, have
limited throughput, and high transaction delays. In this paper, we propose
tree-chain a scalable fast blockchain instantiation that introduces two levels
of randomization among the validators: i) transaction level where the validator
of each transaction is selected randomly based on the most significant
characters of the hash function output (known as consensus code), and ii)
blockchain level where validator is randomly allocated to a particular
consensus code based on the hash of their public key. Tree-chain introduces
parallel chain branches where each validator commits the corresponding
transactions in a unique ledger. Implementation results show that tree-chain is
runnable on low resource devices and incurs low processing overhead, achieving
near real-time transaction settlement
An integrated ranking algorithm for efficient information computing in social networks
Social networks have ensured the expanding disproportion between the face of
WWW stored traditionally in search engine repositories and the actual ever
changing face of Web. Exponential growth of web users and the ease with which
they can upload contents on web highlights the need of content controls on
material published on the web. As definition of search is changing,
socially-enhanced interactive search methodologies are the need of the hour.
Ranking is pivotal for efficient web search as the search performance mainly
depends upon the ranking results. In this paper new integrated ranking model
based on fused rank of web object based on popularity factor earned over only
valid interlinks from multiple social forums is proposed. This model identifies
relationships between web objects in separate social networks based on the
object inheritance graph. Experimental study indicates the effectiveness of
proposed Fusion based ranking algorithm in terms of better search results.Comment: 14 pages, International Journal on Web Service Computing (IJWSC),
