    Security analysis of NIST-LWC contest finalists

    Dissertação de mestrado integrado em Informatics EngineeringTraditional cryptographic standards are designed with a desktop and server environment in mind, so, with the relatively recent proliferation of small, resource constrained devices in the Internet of Things, sensor networks, embedded systems, and more, there has been a call for lightweight cryptographic standards with security, performance and resource requirements tailored for the highly-constrained environments these devices find themselves in. In 2015 the National Institute of Standards and Technology began a Standardization Process in order to select one or more Lightweight Cryptographic algorithms. Out of the original 57 submissions ten finalists remain, with ASCON and Romulus being among the most scrutinized out of them. In this dissertation I will introduce some concepts required for easy understanding of the body of work, do an up-to-date revision on the current situation on the standardization process from a security and performance standpoint, a description of ASCON and Romulus, and new best known analysis, and a comparison of the two, with their advantages, drawbacks, and unique traits.Os padrões criptográficos tradicionais foram elaborados com um ambiente de computador e servidor em mente. Com a proliferação de dispositivos de pequenas dimensões tanto na Internet of Things, redes de sensores e sistemas embutidos, apareceu uma necessidade para se definir padrões para algoritmos de criptografia leve, com prioridades de segurança, performance e gasto de recursos equilibrados para os ambientes altamente limitados em que estes dispositivos operam. Em 2015 o National Institute of Standards and Technology lançou um processo de estandardização com o objectivo de escolher um ou mais algoritmos de criptografia leve. Das cinquenta e sete candidaturas originais sobram apenas dez finalistas, sendo ASCON e Romulus dois desses finalistas mais examinados. Nesta dissertação irei introduzir alguns conceitos necessários para uma fácil compreensão do corpo deste trabalho, assim como uma revisão atualizada da situação atual do processo de estandardização de um ponto de vista tanto de segurança como de performance, uma descrição do ASCON e do Romulus assim como as suas melhores análises recentes e uma comparação entre os dois, frisando as suas vantagens, desvantagens e aspectos únicos

    Towards Finding the Best Characteristics of Some Bit-oriented Block Ciphers and Automatic Enumeration of (Related-key) Differential and Linear Characteristics with Predefined Properties

    In this paper, we investigate the Mixed-integer Linear Programming (MILP) modelling of the differential and linear behavior of a wide range of block ciphers. We point out that the differential behavior of an arbitrary S-box can be exactly described by a small system of linear inequalities. ~~~~~Based on this observation and MILP technique, we propose an automatic method for finding high probability (related-key) differential or linear characteristics of block ciphers. Compared with Sun {\it et al.}\u27s {\it heuristic} method presented in Asiacrypt 2014, the new method is {\it exact} for most ciphers in the sense that every feasible 0-1 solution of the MILP model generated by the new method corresponds to a valid characteristic, and therefore there is no need to repeatedly add valid cutting-off inequalities into the MILP model as is done in Sun {\it et al.}\u27s method; the new method is more powerful which allows us to get the {\it exact lower bounds} of the number of differentially or linearly active S-boxes; and the new method is more efficient which allows to obtain characteristic with higher probability or covering more rounds of a cipher (sometimes with less computational effort). ~~~~~Further, by encoding the probability information of the differentials of an S-boxes into its differential patterns, we present a novel MILP modelling technique which can be used to search for the characteristics with the maximal probability, rather than the characteristics with the smallest number of active S-boxes. With this technique, we are able to get tighter security bounds and find better characteristics. ~~~~~Moreover, by employing a type of specially constructed linear inequalities which can remove {\it exactly one} feasible 0-1 solution from the feasible region of an MILP problem, we propose a method for automatic enumeration of {\it all} (related-key) differential or linear characteristics with some predefined properties, {\it e.g.}, characteristics with given input or/and output difference/mask, or with a limited number of active S-boxes. Such a method is very useful in the automatic (related-key) differential analysis, truncated (related-key) differential analysis, linear hull analysis, and the automatic construction of (related-key) boomerang/rectangle distinguishers. ~~~~~The methods presented in this paper are very simple and straightforward, based on which we implement a Python framework for automatic cryptanalysis, and extensive experiments are performed using this framework. To demonstrate the usefulness of these methods, we apply them to SIMON, PRESENT, Serpent, LBlock, DESL, and we obtain some improved cryptanalytic results

    SoK: Security Evaluation of SBox-Based Block Ciphers

    Cryptanalysis of block ciphers is an active and important research area with an extensive volume of literature. For this work, we focus on SBox-based ciphers, as they are widely used and cover a large class of block ciphers. While there have been prior works that have consolidated attacks on block ciphers, they usually focus on describing and listing the attacks. Moreover, the methods for evaluating a cipher\u27s security are often ad hoc, differing from cipher to cipher, as attacks and evaluation techniques are developed along the way. As such, we aim to organise the attack literature, as well as the work on security evaluation. In this work, we present a systematization of cryptanalysis of SBox-based block ciphers focusing on three main areas: (1) Evaluation of block ciphers against standard cryptanalytic attacks; (2) Organisation and relationships between various attacks; (3) Comparison of the evaluation and attacks on existing ciphers

    Improved Linear Cryptanalysis of Reduced-Round MIBS

    MIBS is a 32-round lightweight block cipher with 64-bit block size and two different key sizes, namely 64-bit and 80-bit keys. Bay et al. provided the first impossible differential, differential and linear cryptanalyses of MIBS. Their best attack was a linear attack on the 18-round MIBS-80. In this paper, we significantly improve their attack by discovering more approximations and mounting Hermelin et al.'s multidimensional linear cryptanalysis. We also use Nguyen et al.'s technique to have less time complexity. We attack on 19 rounds of MIBS-80 with a time complexity of 2^{74.23} 19-round MIBS-80 encryptions by using 2^{57.87} plaintext-ciphertext pairs. To the best of our knowledge, the result proposed in this paper is the best cryptanalytic result for MIBS, so far

    Techniques améliorées pour la cryptanalyse des primitives symétriques

    This thesis proposes improvements which can be applied to several techniques for the cryptanalysis of symmetric primitives. Special attention is given to linear cryptanalysis, for which a technique based on the fast Walsh transform was already known (Collard et al., ICISIC 2007). We introduce a generalised version of this attack, which allows us to apply it on key recovery attacks over multiple rounds, as well as to reduce the complexity of the problem using information extracted, for example, from the key schedule. We also propose a general technique for speeding key recovery attacks up which is based on the representation of Sboxes as binary decision trees. Finally, we showcase the construction of a linear approximation of the full version of the Gimli permutation using mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) optimisation.Dans cette thèse, on propose des améliorations qui peuvent être appliquées à plusieurs techniques de cryptanalyse de primitives symétriques. On dédie une attention spéciale à la cryptanalyse linéaire, pour laquelle une technique basée sur la transformée de Walsh rapide était déjà connue (Collard et al., ICISC 2007). On introduit une version généralisée de cette attaque, qui permet de l'appliquer pour la récupération de clé considerant plusieurs tours, ainsi que le réduction de la complexité du problème en utilisant par example des informations provénantes du key-schedule. On propose aussi une technique générale pour accélérer les attaques par récupération de clé qui est basée sur la représentation des boîtes S en tant que arbres binaires. Finalement, on montre comment on a obtenu une approximation linéaire sur la version complète de la permutation Gimli en utilisant l'optimisation par mixed-integer linear programming (MILP)

    D.STVL.7 - Algebraic cryptanalysis of symmetric primitives

    The recent development of algebraic attacks can be considered an important breakthrough in the analysis of symmetric primitives; these are powerful techniques that apply to both block and stream ciphers (and potentially hash functions). The basic principle of these techniques goes back to Shannon's work: they consist in expressing the whole cryptographic algorithm as a large system of multivariate algebraic equations (typically over F2), which can be solved to recover the secret key. Efficient algorithms for solving such algebraic systems are therefore the essential ingredients of algebraic attacks. Algebraic cryptanalysis against symmetric primitives has recently received much attention from the cryptographic community, particularly after it was proposed against some LFSR- based stream ciphers and against the AES and Serpent block ciphers. This is currently a very active area of research. In this report we discuss the basic principles of algebraic cryptanalysis of stream ciphers and block ciphers, and review the latest developments in the field. We give an overview of the construction of such attacks against both types of primitives, and recall the main algorithms for solving algebraic systems. Finally we discuss future research directions

    A Salad of Block Ciphers

    This book is a survey on the state of the art in block cipher design and analysis. It is work in progress, and it has been for the good part of the last three years -- sadly, for various reasons no significant change has been made during the last twelve months. However, it is also in a self-contained, useable, and relatively polished state, and for this reason I have decided to release this \textit{snapshot} onto the public as a service to the cryptographic community, both in order to obtain feedback, and also as a means to give something back to the community from which I have learned much. At some point I will produce a final version -- whatever being a ``final version\u27\u27 means in the constantly evolving field of block cipher design -- and I will publish it. In the meantime I hope the material contained here will be useful to other people
