    Towards an Ontological Modelling of Preference Relations

    Preference relations are intensively studied in Economics, but they are also approached in AI, Knowledge Representation, and Conceptual Modelling, as they provide a key concept in a variety of domains of application. In this paper, we propose an ontological foundation of preference relations to formalise their essential aspects across domains. Firstly, we shall discuss what is the ontological status of the relata of a preference relation. Secondly, we investigate the place of preference relations within a rich taxonomy of relations (e.g. we ask whether they are internal or external, essential or contingent, descriptive or nondescriptive relations). Finally, we provide an ontological modelling of preference relation as a module of a foundational (or upper) ontology (viz. OntoUML). The aim of this paper is to provide a sharable foundational theory of preference relation that foster interoperability across the heterogeneous domains of application of preference relations

    Preference Modelling

    This paper provides the reader with a presentation of preference modelling fundamental notions as well as some recent results in this field. Preference modelling is an inevitable step in a variety of fields: economy, sociology, psychology, mathematical programming, even medicine, archaeology, and obviously decision analysis. Our notation and some basic definitions, such as those of binary relation, properties and ordered sets, are presented at the beginning of the paper. We start by discussing different reasons for constructing a model or preference. We then go through a number of issues that influence the construction of preference models. Different formalisations besides classical logic such as fuzzy sets and non-classical logics become necessary. We then present different types of preference structures reflecting the behavior of a decision-maker: classical, extended and valued ones. It is relevant to have a numerical representation of preferences: functional representations, value functions. The concepts of thresholds and minimal representation are also introduced in this section. In section 7, we briefly explore the concept of deontic logic (logic of preference) and other formalisms associated with "compact representation of preferences" introduced for special purpoes. We end the paper with some concluding remarks

    Compositional Model Repositories via Dynamic Constraint Satisfaction with Order-of-Magnitude Preferences

    The predominant knowledge-based approach to automated model construction, compositional modelling, employs a set of models of particular functional components. Its inference mechanism takes a scenario describing the constituent interacting components of a system and translates it into a useful mathematical model. This paper presents a novel compositional modelling approach aimed at building model repositories. It furthers the field in two respects. Firstly, it expands the application domain of compositional modelling to systems that can not be easily described in terms of interacting functional components, such as ecological systems. Secondly, it enables the incorporation of user preferences into the model selection process. These features are achieved by casting the compositional modelling problem as an activity-based dynamic preference constraint satisfaction problem, where the dynamic constraints describe the restrictions imposed over the composition of partial models and the preferences correspond to those of the user of the automated modeller. In addition, the preference levels are represented through the use of symbolic values that differ in orders of magnitude

    This study investigates heterogeneity in Thai doctors' job preferences at the beginning of their career, with a view to inform the design of effective policies to retain them in rural areas. A discrete choice experiment was designed and administered to 198 young doctors. We analysed the data using several specifications of a random parameter model to account for various sources of preference heterogeneity. By modelling preference heterogeneity, we showed how sensitivity to different incentives varied in different sections of the population. In particular, doctors from rural backgrounds were more sensitive than others to a 45% salary increase and having a post near their home province, but they were less sensitive to a reduction in the number of on-call nights. On the basis of the model results, the effects of two types of interventions were simulated: introducing various incentives and modifying the population structure. The results of the simulations provide multiple elements for consideration for policy-makers interested in designing effective interventions. They also underline the interest of modelling preference heterogeneity carefully

    Route Choice and the Value of Motorists’ Travel Time: Theoretical and Methodological Issues

    In June 1985, a survey of motorists makng urban journeys within Tyne and Wear was undertaken as part of the Department of Transport's research project into the value of time. This paper considers the theoretical and methodological issues involved in estimating the value that motorists' place upon travel time savings from their actual route choices and their responses to a simulated route choice experiment. The reasons for undertaking this survey and for choosing this particular location are discussed. The experimental design and the modelling technique used in the stated preference analysis are examined and the problems which face both a revealed preference and a stated preference investigation of motorists' route choices are considered. One of the aims of the study is to consider variations in the value of time according to socio-economic factors and journey characteristics. The theoretical sources of variations in the value of time are discussed as is the modelling approach which was adopted to analyse these potential variations. The empirical findings from the actual survey of motorists making urban journeys is the subject of a subsequent working paper

    Modelling multimodal passenger choices with stated preference data

    Redland Shire Council has recently started the implementation of an Integrated Local Transport Plan (ILTP) that aims to reduce the car dependency by enhancing the usage of alternative modes of transport. A multi mode choice model is required that can forecast the travel behaviour across the region in order to achieve the targets set in ILTP. This paper presents the findings of a state-of-the-art literature review done on mode choice modelling and outlines the development and calibration of a model to investigate the travel behaviour of Redlands’ residents. The present study attempts to develop a nested logit model and calibrate it using data obtained from a stated preference (SP) survey to be conducted in the Shire. The model development will consider all the vital attributes of the travelling modes used in the study area including various public transit access modes. The possibility of combining SP and revealed preference (RP) data to calibrate the model using joint-estimation method will be further assessed. It is expected that the outcomes of the research will assist policy makers in the areas of public transport planning and the development of network for public transport access modes including walkways and cycleways

    Why and How Identity Should Influence Utility

    This paper provides an argument for the advantage of a preference for identity-consistent behaviour from an evolutionary point of view. Within a stylised model of social interaction, we show that the development of cooperative social norms is greatly facilitated if the agents of the society possess a preference for identity consistent behaviour. As cooperative norms have a positive impact on aggregate outcomes, we conclude that such preferences are evolutionarily advantageous. Furthermore, we discuss how such a preference can be integrated in the modelling of utility in order to account for the distinctive cooperative trait in human behaviour and show how this squares with the evidence
