    Modeling and simulation enabled UAV electrical power system design

    With the diversity of mission capability and the associated requirement for more advanced technologies, designing modern unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) systems is an especially challenging task. In particular, the increasing reliance on the electrical power system for delivering key aircraft functions, both electrical and mechanical, requires that a systems-approach be employed in their development. A key factor in this process is the use of modeling and simulation to inform upon critical design choices made. However, effective systems-level simulation of complex UAV power systems presents many challenges, which must be addressed to maximize the value of such methods. This paper presents the initial stages of a power system design process for a medium altitude long endurance (MALE) UAV focusing particularly on the development of three full candidate architecture models and associated technologies. The unique challenges faced in developing such a suite of models and their ultimate role in the design process is explored, with case studies presented to reinforce key points. The role of the developed models in supporting the design process is then discussed

    Development of a Dynamic Performance Management Framework for Naval Ship Power System using Model-Based Predictive Control

    Medium-Voltage Direct-Current (MVDC) power system has been considered as the trending technology for future All-Electric Ships (AES) to produce, convert and distribute electrical power. With the wide employment of highrequency power electronics converters and motor drives in DC system, accurate and fast assessment of system dynamic behaviors , as well as the optimization of system transient performance have become serious concerns for system-level studies, high-level control designs and power management algorithm development. The proposed technique presents a coordinated and automated approach to determine the system adjustment strategy for naval power systems to improve the transient performance and prevent potential instability following a system contingency. In contrast with the conventional design schemes that heavily rely on the human operators and pre-specified rules/set points, we focus on the development of the capability to automatically and efficiently detect and react to system state changes following disturbances and or damages by incooperating different system components to formulate an overall system-level solution. To achieve this objective, we propose a generic model-based predictive management framework that can be applied to a variety of Shipboard Power System (SPS) applications to meet the stringent performance requirements under different operating conditions. The proposed technique is proven to effectively prevent the system from instability caused by known and unknown disturbances with little or none human intervention under a variety of operation conditions. The management framework proposed in this dissertation is designed based on the concept of Model Predictive Control (MPC) techniques. A numerical approximation of the actual system is used to predict future system behaviors based on the current states and the candidate control input sequences. Based on the predictions the optimal control solution is chosen and applied as the current control input. The effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed framework can be evaluated conveniently based on a series of performance criteria such as fitness, robustness and computational overhead. An automatic system modeling, analysis and synthesis software environment is also introduced in this dissertation to facilitate the rapid implementation of the proposed performance management framework according to various testing scenarios

    De-risking Integrated Full Electric Propulsion (IFEP) vessels using advanced modelling and simulation techniques

    Complex multi-domain engineering systems, where for example mechanical and thermal (sub)systems are connected to each other in some way, have increasingly become a vital part of our society. An example of such a system is the Integrated Full Electric Propulsion (IFEP) concept for the marine shipping industry. With this IFEP concept, as opposed to the more conventional marine power system, the power for the ship's propulsion and ship's services is provided by a common power plant. This offers advantages including fuel efficiency and design flexibility. However, due to its system complexity and capital costs, it is important that the overall dynamic behaviour of these systems can be predicted in the early stages of the design. Predicting the overall system behaviour can be obtained by employing an integrated end-to-end model, which combines detailed models of for example the mechanical and electrical (sub)systems. This allows for example ship designers to investigate disturbances and the primary and higher order responses across the system. However, present existing simulation tools do not easily facilitate such employment of a holistic approach. In this thesis the focus is on how advanced modelling and simulation techniques can be used to de-risk the design and in-service of complex IFEP systems. The state-of-the-art modelling and simulation techniques as well as the IFEP application area are considered. An integrated-model of an IFEP vessel was developed under the EPSRC collaborative AMEPS (Advanced Marine Electric Propulsion System) research project, which forms a major part of this thesis. In order to reduce the computational burden, due to a wide variety of time constants in the IFEP system, a multi-rate simulation technique was proposed. It was demonstrated that a reduction in simulation execution time between 10-15 times can be achieved. However, it was conceptually argued that multi-rate simulation could introduce errors, which propagates itself across the system thereby provoking potential unrealistic responses from other subsystems. Several case studies were conducted based on this model, which shows that such an integrated end-to-end model may be a valuable decision-support tool for de-risking the design and in-service phases of IFEP vessels. For example, it was demonstrated that a disturbance on the propeller could provoke a saturation of the gas turbine governor. Different power system architectures were proposed for IFEP power systems such as radial and hybrid AC/DC. For this thesis, an initial study was conducted to assess the relationship between the type of power system architecture and the vessel survivability. For this assessment an existing vessel survivability theory was further developed into a quantitative method.     Urban and extra-urban hybrid vehicles: a technological review

    Pollution derived from transportation systems is a worldwide, timelier issue than ever. The abatement actions of harmful substances in the air are on the agenda and they are necessary today to safeguard our welfare and that of the planet. Environmental pollution in large cities is approximately 20% due to the transportation system. In addition, private traffic contributes greatly to city pollution. Further, “vehicle operating life” is most often exceeded and vehicle emissions do not comply with European antipollution standards. It becomes mandatory to find a solution that respects the environment and, realize an appropriate transportation service to the customers. New technologies related to hybrid –electric engines are making great strides in reducing emissions, and the funds allocated by public authorities should be addressed. In addition, the use (implementation) of new technologies is also convenient from an economic point of view. In fact, by implementing the use of hybrid vehicles, fuel consumption can be reduced. The different hybrid configurations presented refer to such a series architecture, developed by the researchers and Research and Development groups. Regarding energy flows, different strategy logic or vehicle management units have been illustrated. Various configurations and vehicles were studied by simulating different driving cycles, both European approval and homologation and customer ones (typically municipal and university). The simulations have provided guidance on the optimal proposed configuration and information on the component to be used

    Distributed Predictive Control for MVDC Shipboard Power System Management

    Shipboard Power System (SPS) is known as an independent controlled small electric network powered by the distributed onboard generation system. Since many electric components are tightly coupled in a small space and the system is not supported with a relatively stronger grid, SPS is more susceptible to unexpected disturbances and physical damages compared to conventional terrestrial power systems. Among different distribution configurations, power-electronic based DC distribution is considered the trending technology for the next-generation U.S. Navy fleet design to replace the conventional AC-based distribution. This research presents appropriate control management frameworks to improve the Medium-Voltage DC (MVDC) shipboard power system performance. Model Predictive Control (MPC) is an advanced model-based approach which uses the system model to predict the future output states and generates an optimal control sequence over the prediction horizon. In this research, at first, a centralized MPC is developed for a nonlinear MVDC SPS when a high-power pulsed load exists in the system. The closed-loop stability analysis is considered in the MPC optimization problem. A comparison is presented for different cases of load prediction for MPC, namely, no prediction, perfect prediction, and Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) prediction. Another centralized MPC controller is also designed to address the reconfiguration problem of the MVDC system in abnormal conditions. The reconfiguration goal is to maximize the power delivered to the loads with respect to power balance, generation limits and load priorities. Moreover, a distributed control structure is proposed for a nonlinear MVDC SPS to develop a scalable power management architecture. In this framework, each subsystem is controlled by a local MPC using its state variables, parameters and interaction variables from other subsystems communicated through a coordinator. The Goal Coordination principle is used to manage interactions between subsystems. The developed distributed control structure brings out several significant advantages including less computational overhead, higher flexibility and a good error tolerance behavior as well as a good overall system performance. To demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed approach, a performance analysis is accomplished by comparing centralized and distributed control of global and partitioned MVDC models for two cases of continuous and discretized control inputs

    Real-time flight test analysis and display techniques for the X-29A aircraft

    The X-29A advanced technology demonstrator flight envelope expansion program and the subsequent flight research phase gave impetus to the development of several innovative real-time analysis and display techniques. These new techniques produced significant improvements in flight test productivity, flight research capabilities, and flight safety. These techniques include real-time measurement and display of in-flight structural loads, dynamic structural mode frequency and damping, flight control system dynamic stability and control response, aeroperformance drag polars, and aircraft specific excess power. Several of these analysis techniques also provided for direct comparisons of flight-measured results with analytical predictions. The aeroperformance technique was made possible by the concurrent development of a new simplified in-flight net thrust computation method. To achieve these levels of on-line flight test analysis, integration of ground and airborne systems was required. The capability of NASA Ames Research Center, Dryden Flight Research Facility's Western Aeronautical Test Range was a key factor in enabling implementation of these methods
