Improving the Institutional Behaviour of Prisoners: Challenges and Opportunities for Behaviour Analysis
Prisoner misconduct presents a significant issue to correctional administrators, disrupting the orderly running of regimes, endangering safety, and negatively impacting the health and well-being of both prisoners and frontline staff. While an extensive literature has emerged around rehabilitative intervention with offenders, research efforts have been more commonly directed towards reducing post-release recidivism, resulting in a relatively sparse literature concerning the in-prison behaviour of prisoners. Persistent and rising levels of violent and disruptive behaviour in prisons highlight the need for greater research attention to be devoted to this issue. The field of applied behaviour analysis may be well placed to address this research deficit, with historical work in prisons and more recent efforts in juvenile justice settings suggesting that approaches derived from behaviour analysis may hold promise in correctional settings. This includes an emerging literature relating to the adaptation of school-wide Positive Behavioural Interventions and Supports (PBIS) to juvenile justice facilities. PBIS offers a framework within which to integrate a continuum of evidencebased practices to address the needs of the population to which it is applied. Preliminary evidence suggests that the approach is feasible, is viewed positively by residents and staff, and can be efficacious in improving resident behaviour in these settings. However, addressing prisoner misconduct within adult prisons may present distinct challenges to that of juvenile forensic settings, given differences in their size, staffing ratios, and focus on education and rehabilitation. This thesis aimed to contribute to the literature on identifying effective behavioural interventions for use with adult prisoners. First, a comprehensive systematic review was conducted to explore the range of interventions directed towards reducing prisoner misconduct and identify “what works” in reducing institutional infractions (Chapter 2). Findings suggested that cognitive behavioural approaches reduced violent infractions but not overall misconduct, while therapeutic community interventions and educational approaches reduced overall misconduct. Second, focus groups were conducted with prisoners and frontline staff (prison officers) to assess valued intervention outcomes and explore potential barriers for PBIS implementation (Chapter 3). Three overarching values were identified: a need for rehabilitation, consistency, and respect. Potential barriers to PBIS included pessimistic views towards rehabilitative approaches and perceptions of limited resources. Third, the intervention design process of a universal (Tier 1) intervention strategy was described that incorporated evidence-based practices, stakeholder values, and institutional data on prisoner behaviour, whilst also operating within available resources (Chapter 4). The resulting intervention was a peer-led approach that focussed on increasing prisoner engagement in purposeful activity. Fourth, a feasibility study was conducted to establish the viability of the intervention as well as the feasibility of research procedures in the setting (Chapter 5). The intervention successfully promoted prisoner engagement, with prisoners reporting beneficial effects on behaviour, social relationships, and well-being. Staff perceptions of the approach were more tempered but generally positive. Institutional records did not appear sufficiently sensitive to detect changes in prisoner misconduct, suggesting that alternative measurement approaches may need to be identified. Finally, opportunities and barriers to behaviour analytic research in adult prisons were explored (Chapter 6), highlighting the continued relevance of the seven dimensions of behaviour analysis to prisonbased research.<br/
Co-offending and the persistence of violence: A dynamic analysis

Previous research underscores the influence of prior violent co-offending on subsequent violent behavior, linking it to a social contagion mechanism akin to the internalization of violence. However, these studies are limited by disregarding the entirety of a criminal career and overlooking diverse co-offending dynamics beyond co-offenders’ characteristics. This study examines the longitudinal impact of prior violent (solo and co-) offending on future individual-level violent behavior among Italian organized crime offenders.
Methods:
Leveraging criminal career data from 9819 Italian organized crime offenders, we model offending choices through a discrete-time Markov process. Subsequently, employing dynamic random-effects probit models, we quantify the influence of prior violent (solo and co-) offending on future violence, considering various confounders and unobserved individual-level effects.
Results:
Violence is a persistent and long-lasting behavior among organized crime offenders. Prior violent co-offending has a greater impact than prior violent solo offending on the probability of future violence. Prior violent co-offending increases the probability of future violent co-offending but does not impact the probability of future violent solo offending.
Conclusions:
The results show that co-offending promotes the transmission of violence but fail to support the internalization of violent behavior postulated by prior studies. We propose possible alternative mechanisms of violence transmission that operate through self-sustaining dynamics of violent co-offending within criminal groups. Although limited data on individual characteristics constrains interpretation, our results imply that violence transmission dynamics are independent from the individual characteristics of the co-offenders and more directly connected to group effects.European Union’s Horizon 202
In the name of status:Adolescent harmful social behavior as strategic self-regulation
Adolescent harmful social behavior is behavior that benefits the person that exhibits it but could harm (the interest of) another. The traditional perspective on adolescent harmful social behavior is that it is what happens when something goes wrong in the developmental process, classifying such behaviors as a self-regulation failure. Yet, theories drawing from evolution theory underscore the adaptiveness of harmful social behavior and argue that such behavior is enacted as a means to gain important resources for survival and reproduction; gaining a position of power This dissertation aims to examine whether adolescent harmful social behavior can indeed be strategic self-regulation, and formulated two questions: Can adolescent harmful social behavior be seen as strategic attempts to obtain social status? And how can we incorporate this status-pursuit perspective more into current interventions that aim to reduce harmful social behavior? To answer these questions, I conducted a meta-review, a meta-analysis, two experimental studies, and an individual participant data meta-analysis (IPDMA). Meta-review findings of this dissertation underscore that when engaging in particular behavior leads to the acquisition of important peer-status-related goals, harmful social behavior may also develop from adequate self-regulation. Empirical findings indicate that the prospect of status affordances can motivate adolescents to engage in harmful social behavior and that descriptive and injunctive peer norms can convey such status prospects effectively. IPDMA findings illustrate that we can reach more adolescent cooperation and collectivism than we are currently promoting via interventions. In this dissertation, I argue we can do this in two ways. One, teach adolescents how they can achieve status by behaving prosocially. And two, change peer norms that reward harmful social behavior with popularity
Redefining Disproportionate Arrest Rates: An Exploratory Quasi-Experiment that Reassesses the Role of Skin Tone
The New York Times reported that Black Lives Matter was the third most-read subject of 2020. These articles brought to the forefront the question of disparity in arrest rates for darker-skinned people. Questioning arrest disparity is understandable because virtually everything known about disproportionate arrest rates has been a guess, and virtually all prior research on disproportionate arrest rates is questionable because of improper benchmarking (the denominator effect). Current research has highlighted the need to switch from demographic data to skin tone data and start over on disproportionate arrest rate research; therefore, this study explored the relationship between skin tone and disproportionate arrest rates. This study also sought to determine which of the three theories surrounding disproportionate arrests is most predictive of disproportionate rates. The current theories are that disproportionate arrests increase as skin tone gets darker (stereotype threat theory), disproportionate rates are different for Black and Brown people (self-categorization theory), or disproportionate rates apply equally across all darker skin colors (social dominance theory). This study used a quantitative exploratory quasi-experimental design using linear spline regression to analyze arrest rates in Alachua County, Florida, before and after the county’s mandate to reduce arrests as much as possible during the COVID-19 pandemic to protect the prison population. The study was exploratory as no previous study has used skin tone analysis to examine arrest disparity. The findings of this study redefines the understanding of the existence and nature of disparities in arrest rates and offer a solid foundation for additional studies about the relationship between disproportionate arrest rates and skin color
A Causal Comparative Study of The Difference in Achievement Scores of At-Risk, Minority Students Based on Learning Styles
The American education system has historically promoted free and equal education for all, but history has shown that ethnic minority students’ academic achievement has been lower than ethnic majority students’ academic achievement. The resulting gap in achievement has been addressed throughout the research, but definitive solutions remain elusive. The study addressed the lack of research surrounding cultural learning patterns of at-risk students. The purpose of this quantitative, casual comparative study is to determine the difference among annual state mandated test scores of at-risk students who have visual, auditory, read/write or kinesthetic (VARK) learning styles. The participants for the study were drawn from a convenience sample of students located in a northeastern state during the spring semester of the 2020-2021 school year. The assessment was administered to students who were in grades six, seven and eight during the 2020-2021 school year to determine preferred learning styles. The researcher also used 2020-2021 Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA) results to determine the differences among annual, state-mandated test scores of at-risk students who have VARK learning styles. The data were analyzed from each of the visual, auditory, read/write, and kinesthetic learning styles profiles. A one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to analyze the samples. The research shows that students benefit from increased teacher/student connections, faith-baesd partnerships, and increased awareness of cultural influences on learning. The data supports implementing tiered supports to address absenteeism and student disengagement
