    Accurate Light Field Depth Estimation with Superpixel Regularization over Partially Occluded Regions

    Depth estimation is a fundamental problem for light field photography applications. Numerous methods have been proposed in recent years, which either focus on crafting cost terms for more robust matching, or on analyzing the geometry of scene structures embedded in the epipolar-plane images. Significant improvements have been made in terms of overall depth estimation error; however, current state-of-the-art methods still show limitations in handling intricate occluding structures and complex scenes with multiple occlusions. To address these challenging issues, we propose a very effective depth estimation framework which focuses on regularizing the initial label confidence map and edge strength weights. Specifically, we first detect partially occluded boundary regions (POBR) via superpixel based regularization. Series of shrinkage/reinforcement operations are then applied on the label confidence map and edge strength weights over the POBR. We show that after weight manipulations, even a low-complexity weighted least squares model can produce much better depth estimation than state-of-the-art methods in terms of average disparity error rate, occlusion boundary precision-recall rate, and the preservation of intricate visual features

    Theoretical quantification of shape distortion in fuzzy hough transform

    We present a generalization of classical Hough transform in fuzzy set theoretic framework (called fuzzy Hough transform or FHT) in order to handle the impreciseness/ill-definedness in shape description. In addition to identifying the shapes, the methodology can quantify the amount of distortion present in each shape by suitably characterizing the parametric space. We extended FHT to take care of gray level images (gray FHT) in order to handle the gray level variation along with shape distortion. The gray FHT gives rise to a scheme for image segmentation based on the a priori knowledge about the shapes

    The state of the art in multimedia information technology has not progressed to the point where a single solution is available to meet all reasonable needs of documentalists and users of video archives. In general, we do not have an optimistic view of the usability of new technology in this domain, but digitization and digital power can be expected to cause a small revolution in the area of video archiving. The volume of data leads to two views of the future: on the pessimistic side, overload of data will cause lack of annotation capacity, and on the optimistic side, there will be enough data from which to learn selected concepts that can be deployed to support automatic annotation.
