A Primal-Dual Augmented Lagrangian
Nonlinearly constrained optimization problems can be solved by minimizing a sequence of simpler unconstrained or linearly constrained subproblems. In this paper, we discuss the formulation of subproblems in which the objective is a primal-dual generalization of the Hestenes-Powell augmented Lagrangian function. This generalization has the crucial feature that it is minimized with respect to both the primal and the dual variables simultaneously. A benefit of this approach is that the quality of the dual variables is monitored explicitly during the solution of the subproblem. Moreover, each subproblem may be regularized by imposing explicit bounds on the dual variables. Two primal-dual variants of conventional primal methods are proposed: a primal-dual bound constrained Lagrangian (pdBCL) method and a primal-dual 1 linearly constrained Lagrangian (pd1-LCL) method
Optimal mistuning for enhanced aeroelastic stability of transonic fans
An inverse design procedure was developed for the design of a mistuned rotor. The design requirements are that the stability margin of the eigenvalues of the aeroelastic system be greater than or equal to some minimum stability margin, and that the mass added to each blade be positive. The objective was to achieve these requirements with a minimal amount of mistuning. Hence, the problem was posed as a constrained optimization problem. The constrained minimization problem was solved by the technique of mathematical programming via augmented Lagrangians. The unconstrained minimization phase of this technique was solved by the variable metric method. The bladed disk was modelled as being composed of a rigid disk mounted on a rigid shaft. Each of the blades were modelled with a single tosional degree of freedom
Augmented Lagrangian Method for Constrained Nuclear Density Functional Theory
The augmented Lagrangiam method (ALM), widely used in quantum chemistry
constrained optimization problems, is applied in the context of the nuclear
Density Functional Theory (DFT) in the self-consistent constrained Skyrme
Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (CHFB) variant. The ALM allows precise calculations of
multidimensional energy surfaces in the space of collective coordinates that
are needed to, e.g., determine fission pathways and saddle points; it improves
accuracy of computed derivatives with respect to collective variables that are
used to determine collective inertia; and is well adapted to supercomputer
applications.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures; to appear in Eur. Phys. J.
Multiplicative Noise Removal Using Variable Splitting and Constrained Optimization
Multiplicative noise (also known as speckle noise) models are central to the
study of coherent imaging systems, such as synthetic aperture radar and sonar,
and ultrasound and laser imaging. These models introduce two additional layers
of difficulties with respect to the standard Gaussian additive noise scenario:
(1) the noise is multiplied by (rather than added to) the original image; (2)
the noise is not Gaussian, with Rayleigh and Gamma being commonly used
densities. These two features of multiplicative noise models preclude the
direct application of most state-of-the-art algorithms, which are designed for
solving unconstrained optimization problems where the objective has two terms:
a quadratic data term (log-likelihood), reflecting the additive and Gaussian
nature of the noise, plus a convex (possibly nonsmooth) regularizer (e.g., a
total variation or wavelet-based regularizer/prior). In this paper, we address
these difficulties by: (1) converting the multiplicative model into an additive
one by taking logarithms, as proposed by some other authors; (2) using variable
splitting to obtain an equivalent constrained problem; and (3) dealing with
this optimization problem using the augmented Lagrangian framework. A set of
experiments shows that the proposed method, which we name MIDAL (multiplicative
image denoising by augmented Lagrangian), yields state-of-the-art results both
in terms of speed and denoising performance.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables. To appear in the IEEE Transactions on
