Probabilistic active learning : an online framework for structural health monitoring
A novel, probabilistic framework for the classification, investigation and labelling of data is suggested as an online strategy for Structural Health Monitoring (SHM). A critical issue for data-based SHM is a lack of descriptive labels (for measured data), which correspond to the condition of the monitored system. For many applications, these labels are costly and/or impractical to obtain, and as a result, conventional supervised learning is not feasible. This fact forces a dependence on outlier analysis, or one-class classifiers, in practical applications, as a means of damage detection. The model suggested in this work, however, allows for the definition of a multi-class classifier, to aid both damage detection and identification, while using a limited number of the most informative labelled data. The algorithm is applied to three datasets in the online setting; the Z24 bridge data, a machining (acoustic emission) dataset, and measurements from ground vibration aircraft tests. In the experiments, active learning is shown to improve the online classification performance for damage detection and classification
A Contextual Bandit Bake-off
Contextual bandit algorithms are essential for solving many real-world
interactive machine learning problems. Despite multiple recent successes on
statistically and computationally efficient methods, the practical behavior of
these algorithms is still poorly understood. We leverage the availability of
large numbers of supervised learning datasets to empirically evaluate
contextual bandit algorithms, focusing on practical methods that learn by
relying on optimization oracles from supervised learning. We find that a recent
method (Foster et al., 2018) using optimism under uncertainty works the best
overall. A surprisingly close second is a simple greedy baseline that only
explores implicitly through the diversity of contexts, followed by a variant of
Online Cover (Agarwal et al., 2014) which tends to be more conservative but
robust to problem specification by design. Along the way, we also evaluate
various components of contextual bandit algorithm design such as loss
estimators. Overall, this is a thorough study and review of contextual bandit
methodology
A hybrid method for the analysis of learner behaviour in active learning environments
Software-mediated learning requires adjustments in the teaching and learning process. In particular active learning facilitated through interactive learning software differs from traditional instructor-oriented, classroom-based teaching. We present behaviour analysis techniques for Web-mediated learning. Motivation, acceptance of the learning approach and technology, learning organisation and actual tool usage are aspects of behaviour that require different analysis techniques to be used. A hybrid method based on a combination of survey methods and Web usage mining techniques can provide accurate and comprehensive analysis results. These techniques allow us to evaluate active learning approaches implemented in form of Web tutorials
Forced Oscillation Source Location via Multivariate Time Series Classification
Precisely locating low-frequency oscillation sources is the prerequisite of
suppressing sustained oscillation, which is an essential guarantee for the
secure and stable operation of power grids. Using synchrophasor measurements, a
machine learning method is proposed to locate the source of forced oscillation
in power systems. Rotor angle and active power of each power plant are utilized
to construct multivariate time series (MTS). Applying Mahalanobis distance
metric and dynamic time warping, the distance between MTS with different phases
or lengths can be appropriately measured. The obtained distance metric,
representing characteristics during the transient phase of forced oscillation
under different disturbance sources, is used for offline classifier training
and online matching to locate the disturbance source. Simulation results using
the four-machine two-area system and IEEE 39-bus system indicate that the
proposed location method can identify the power system forced oscillation
source online with high accuracy.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. Accepted by 2018 IEEE/PES Transmission and

Active Transfer Learning with Zero-Shot Priors: Reusing Past Datasets for Future Tasks
How can we reuse existing knowledge, in the form of available datasets, when
solving a new and apparently unrelated target task from a set of unlabeled
data? In this work we make a first contribution to answer this question in the
context of image classification. We frame this quest as an active learning
problem and use zero-shot classifiers to guide the learning process by linking
the new task to the existing classifiers. By revisiting the dual formulation of
adaptive SVM, we reveal two basic conditions to choose greedily only the most
relevant samples to be annotated. On this basis we propose an effective active
learning algorithm which learns the best possible target classification model
with minimum human labeling effort. Extensive experiments on two challenging
datasets show the value of our approach compared to the state-of-the-art active
learning methodologies, as well as its potential to reuse past datasets with
minimal effort for future tasks
