Power quality issues of 3MW direct-driven PMSG wind turbine

    Get PDF
This paper presents power quality issues of a grid connected wind generation system with a MW-class direct-driven permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG). A variable speed wind turbine model was simulated and developed with the simulation tool of PSCAD/EMTDC. The model includes a wind turbine with one mass-model drive train model, a PMSG model and a full-scale voltage source back to back PWM converter. The converter controller model is employed in the dq-synchronous rotating reference frame and applied to both generator and grid sides. To achieve maximum power point tracking, a tip speed ratio method is applied in machine side, whereas DC voltage control is applied in grid side to achieve constant DC voltage. Due to wind fluctuation and power oscillation as a result of wind shear and tower shadow effects (3p), there will be a fluctuation in the output power and voltage. The concerned power quality issues in this work are Harmonics, power fluctuation and flicker emission. The measurements will be carried out under different wind speed and circumstances

Power quality issues related to variable-frequency drives

Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) are widely used in industrial and commercial applications due to their ability to reduce energy demand. A VFD, however, is not only sensitive to poor power quality (e.g., voltage transients, sags, and swells), but is also considered as a source of harmonic pollution. Harmonic currents generated by VFDs are often blocked by passive shunt or series filters. The impact of line reactors on voltage disturbances originating from the utility side is not fully explored. Other issues like the use of output reactors with long motor leads and grounding of the power distribution system are also important issues with regard to the use of VFD; The proposed research is to investigate power quality issues related to VFDs, broadly classified into three objectives: (a) impact of input reactors on power quality, under power system disturbances from the utility side; (b) impact of output reactors on the quality of power supplied to motors, when fed from sufficiently long cables; (c) impact of operating a VFD from an ungrounded distribution system The study would be carried out using the computer simulation tool PSPICE

This paper discusses the power quality issues for distributed generation systems based on renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind energy. A thorough discussion about the power quality issues is conducted here. This paper starts with the power quality issues, followed by discussions of basic standards. A comprehensive study of power quality in power systems, including the systems with dc and renewable sources is done in this paper. Power quality monitoring techniques and possible solutions of the power quality issues for the power systems are elaborately studied. Then, we analyze the methods of mitigation of these problems using custom power devices, such as D-STATCOM, UPQC, UPS, TVSS, DVR, etc., for micro grid systems. For renewable energy systems, STATCOM can be a potential choice due to its several advantages, whereas spinning reserve can enhance the power quality in traditional systems. At Last, we study the power quality in dc systems. Simpler arrangement and higher reliability are two main advantages of the dc systems though it faces other power quality issues, such as instability and poor detection of faults

This paper deals with the evaluation of power quality issues in grid connected PV systems. This paper also presents  complete simulation, modeling and control of three phase grid connected solar PV module with Maximum Power Point Tracking. Perturb and Observe (P&O) method has been used for Maximum Power Point Tracking. In the proposed model DC bus voltage control , harmonic mitigation and power factor control are discussed as power quality issues. The simulation results are shown in the graphical waveforms and simulation is performed in MATLAB using SIMULINK environment and PSB toolboxes.

Most of the loads used in our day-to-day life are non-linear in nature. To investigate the performance of various non-linear loads, a laboratory setup on different load combinations such as light, fan and drive system in this work. The unbalance in supply voltages, supply current and frequency, reduction in power factor and total harmonic distortion for current and voltages are monitored through this lab setup and also the results obtained from these systems are discussed in this paper. To check the nature of voltage, current, reactive power and power factor in real-time systems, a turret punch machine incorporated with several single-phase AC servo motors is considered. The variations in the parameters are recorded using the fluke analyzer. Finally, it is observed that current harmonics at the source side are dominant in both the laboratory setup and the real-time system. Next, shunt active power filters are applied to mitigate the current harmonics. The simulation for the system with compensations is conducted in the Matlab platform and the hardware implementation validates the same
