    Positioning unmanned aerial vehicles as communication relays for surveillance tasks

    When unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are used to survey distant targets, it is important to transmit sensor information back to a base station. As this communication often requires high uninterrupted bandwidth, the surveying UAV often needs a free line-of-sight to the base station, which can be problematic in urban or mountainous areas. Communication ranges may also be limited, especially for smaller UAVs. Though both problems can be solved through the use of relay chains consisting of one or more intermediate relay UAVs, this leads to a new problem: Where should relays be placed for optimum performance? We present two new algorithms capable of generating such relay chains, one being a dual ascent algorithm and the other a modification of the Bellman-Ford algorithm. As the priorities between the number of hops in the relay chain and the cost of the chain may vary, we calculate chains of different lengths and costs and let the ground operator choose between them. Several different formulations for edge costs are presented. In our test cases, both algorithms are substantially faster than an optimized version of the original Bellman-Ford algorithm, which is used for comparison

    A review of relay network on UAVS for enhanced connectivity

    One of the best evolution in technology breakthroughs is the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). This aerial system is able to perform the mission in an agile environment and can reach the hard areas to perform the tasks autonomously. UAVs can be used in post-disaster situations to estimate damages, to monitor and to respond to the victims. The Ground Control Station can also provide emergency messages and ad-hoc communication to the Mobile Users of the disaster-stricken community using this network. A wireless network can also extend its communication range using UAV as a relay. Major requirements from such networks are robustness, scalability, energy efficiency and reliability. In general, UAVs are easy to deploy, have Line of Sight options and are flexible in nature. However, their 3D mobility, energy constraints, and deployment environment introduce many challenges. This paper provides a discussion of basic UAV based multi-hop relay network architecture and analyses their benefits, applications, and tradeoffs. Key design considerations and challenges are investigated finding fundamental issues and potential research directions to exploit them. Finally, analytical tools and frameworks for performance optimizations are presented

    Research with Collaborative Unmanned Aircraft Systems

    We provide an overview of ongoing research which targets development of a principled framework for mixed-initiative interaction with unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). UASs are now becoming technologically mature enough to be integrated into civil society. Principled interaction between UASs and human resources is an essential component in their future uses in complex emergency services or bluelight scenarios. In our current research, we have targeted a triad of fundamental, interdependent conceptual issues: delegation, mixed- initiative interaction and adjustable autonomy, that is being used as a basis for developing a principled and well-defined framework for interaction. This can be used to clarify, validate and verify different types of interaction between human operators and UAS systems both theoretically and practically in UAS experimentation with our deployed platforms

    Ensuring Network Connectivity for Decentralized Planning in Dynamic Environments

    This work addresses the issue of network connectivity for a team of heterogeneous agents operating in a dynamic environment. The Consensus-Based Bundle Algorithm (CBBA), a distributed task allocation framework previously developed by the authors and their colleagues, is introduced as a methodology for complex mission planning, and extensions are proposed to address limited communication environments. In particular, CBBA with Relays leverages information available through already existing consensus phases to predict the network topology at select times and creates relay tasks to strengthen the connectivity of the network. By employing underutilized resources, the presented approach improves network connectivity without limiting the scope of the active agents, thus improving mission performance.United States.     Analysis of AeroMACS Data Link for Unmanned Aircraft Vehicles

    Aeronautical Mobile Airport Communications System (AeroMACS) is based on the IEEE 802.16e mobile wireless standard commonly known as WiMAX. It is expected to be the main part of the next-generation aviation communication system to support fixed and mobile services for manned and unmanned applications. AeroMACS will be an essential technology helping pave the way toward full integration of Unmanned Aircraft Vehicle (UAV) into the national airspace. A number of practical tests and analyses have been done so far for AeroMACS. The main contribution of this paper is to consider the theoretical concepts behind its features and discuss their suitability for UAV applications. Mathematical analyses of the AeroMACS physical layer framework are provided to show the theoretical trade-offs. We mainly focus on the analysis of the AeroMACS OFDMA structure, which affects the speed limits, coverage cell, channel estimation requirements, and inter-carrier interference
