    A Survey on Energy Optimization Techniques in UAV-Based Cellular Networks: From Conventional to Machine Learning Approaches

    Wireless communication networks have been witnessing an unprecedented demand due to the increasing number of connected devices and emerging bandwidth-hungry applications. Albeit many competent technologies for capacity enhancement purposes, such as millimeter wave communications and network densification, there is still room and need for further capacity enhancement in wireless communication networks, especially for the cases of unusual people gatherings, such as sport competitions, musical concerts, etc. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been identified as one of the promising options to enhance the capacity due to their easy implementation, pop up fashion operation, and cost-effective nature. The main idea is to deploy base stations on UAVs and operate them as flying base stations, thereby bringing additional capacity to where it is needed. However, because the UAVs mostly have limited energy storage, their energy consumption must be optimized to increase flight time. In this survey, we investigate different energy optimization techniques with a top-level classification in terms of the optimization algorithm employed; conventional and machine learning (ML). Such classification helps understand the state of the art and the current trend in terms of methodology. In this regard, various optimization techniques are identified from the related literature, and they are presented under the above mentioned classes of employed optimization methods. In addition, for the purpose of completeness, we include a brief tutorial on the optimization methods and power supply and charging mechanisms of UAVs. Moreover, novel concepts, such as reflective intelligent surfaces and landing spot optimization, are also covered to capture the latest trend in the literature.Comment: 41 pages, 5 Figures, 6 Tables.     Throughput Maximization in Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Networks

    The use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) swarms in civilian applications such as surveillance, agriculture, search and rescue, and border patrol is becoming popular. UAVs have also found use as mobile or portable base stations. In these applications, communication requirements for UAVs are generally stricter as compared to conventional aircrafts. Hence, there needs to be an efficient Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol that ensures UAVs experience low channel access delays and high throughput. Some challenges when designing UAVs MAC protocols include interference and rapidly changing channel states, which require a UAV to adapt its data rate to ensure data transmission success. Other challenges include Quality of Service (QoS) requirements and multiple contending UAVs that result in collisions and channel access delays. To this end, this thesis aims to utilize Multi-Packet Reception (MPR) technology. In particular, it considers nodes that are equipped with a Successive Interference Cancellation (SIC) radio, and thereby, allowing them to receive multiple transmissions simultaneously. A key problem is to identify a suitable a Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) transmission schedule that allows UAVs to transmit successfully and frequently. Moreover, in order for SIC to operate, there must be a sufficient difference in received power. However, in practice, due to the location and orientation of nodes, the received power of simultaneously transmitting nodes may cause SIC decoding to fail at a receiver. Consequently, a key problem concerns the placement and orientation of UAVs to ensure there is diversity in received signal strength at a receiving node. Lastly, interference between UAVs serving as base station is a critical issue. In particular, their respective location may have excessive interference or cause interference to other UAVs; all of which have an impact on the schedule used by these UAVs to serve their respective users

    Positioning of multiple unmanned aerial vehicle base stations in future wireless network

    Abstract. Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) base stations (BSs) can be a reliable and efficient alternative to full fill the coverage and capacity requirements when the backbone network fails to provide the requirements during temporary events and after disasters. In this thesis, we consider three-dimensional deployment of multiple UAV-BSs in a millimeter-Wave network. Initially, we defined a set of locations for a UAV-BS to be deployed inside a cell, then possible combinations of predefined locations for multiple UAV-BSs are determined and assumed that users have fixed locations. We developed a novel algorithm to find the feasible positions from the predefined locations of multiple UAVs subject to a signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) constraint of every associated user to guarantees the quality-of-service (QoS), UAV-BS’s limited hovering altitude constraint and restricted operating zone because of regulation policies. Further, we take into consideration the millimeter-wave transmission and multi-antenna techniques to generate directional beams to serve the users in a cell. We cast the positioning problem as an ℓ₀ minimization problem. This is a combinatorial, NP-hard, and finding the optimum solution is not tractable by exhaustive search. Therefore, we focused on the sub-optimal algorithm to find a feasible solution. We approximate the ℓ₀ minimization problem as non-combinatorial ℓ₁-norm problem. The simulation results reveal that, with millimeter-wave transmission the positioning of the UAV-BS while satisfying the constrains is feasible. Further, the analysis shows that the proposed algorithm achieves a near-optimal location to deploy multiple UVABS simultaneously

    Allocation of Communication and Computation Resources in Mobile Networks

    Konvergence komunikačních a výpočetních technologií vedlo k vzniku Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC). MEC poskytuje výpočetní výkon na tzv. hraně mobilních sítí (základnové stanice, jádro mobilní sítě), který lze využít pro optimalizaci mobilních sítí v reálném čase. Optimalizacev reálném čase je umožněna díky nízkému komunikačnímu zpoždění například v porovnání s Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC). Optimalizace mobilních sítí vyžaduje informace o mobilní síti od uživatelských zařízeních, avšak sběr těchto informací využívá komunikační prostředky, které jsou využívány i pro přenos uživatelských dat. Zvyšující se počet uživatelských zařízení, senzorů a taktéž komunikace vozidel tvoří překážku pro sběr informací o mobilních sítích z důvodu omezeného množství komunikačních prostředků. Tudíž je nutné navrhnout řešení, která umožní sběr těchto informací pro potřeby optimalizace mobilních sítí. V této práci je navrženo řešení pro komunikaci vysokého počtu zařízeních, které je postaveno na využití přímé komunikace mezi zařízeními. Pro motivování uživatelů, pro využití přeposílání dat pomocí přímé komunikace mezi uživateli je navrženo přidělování komunikačních prostředků jenž vede na přirozenou spolupráci uživatelů. Dále je provedena analýza spotřeby energie při využití přeposílání dat pomocí přímé komunikace mezi uživateli pro ukázání jejích výhod z pohledu spotřeby energie. Pro další zvýšení počtu komunikujících zařízení je využito mobilních létajících základových stanic (FlyBS). Pro nasazení FlyBS je navržen algoritmus, který hledá pozici FlyBS a asociaci uživatel k FlyBS pro zvýšení spokojenosti uživatelů s poskytovanými datovými propustnostmi. MEC lze využít nejen pro optimalizaci mobilních sítí z pohledu mobilních operátorů, ale taktéž uživateli mobilních sítí. Tito uživatelé mohou využít MEC pro přenost výpočetně náročných úloh z jejich mobilních zařízeních do MEC. Z důvodu mobility uživatel je nutné nalézt vhodně přidělení komunikačních a výpočetních prostředků pro uspokojení uživatelských požadavků. Tudíž je navržen algorithmus pro výběr komunikační cesty mezi uživatelem a MEC, jenž je posléze rozšířen o přidělování výpočetných prostředků společně s komunikačními prostředky. Navržené řešení vede k snížení komunikačního zpoždění o desítky procent.The convergence of communication and computing in the mobile networks has led to an introduction of the Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC). The MEC combines communication and computing resources at the edge of the mobile network and provides an option to optimize the mobile network in real-time. This is possible due to close proximity of the computation resources in terms of communication delay, in comparison to the Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC). The optimization of the mobile networks requires information about the mobile network and User Equipment (UE). Such information, however, consumes a significant amount of communication resources. The finite communication resources along with the ever increasing number of the UEs and other devices, such as sensors, vehicles pose an obstacle for collecting the required information. Therefore, it is necessary to provide solutions to enable the collection of the required mobile network information from the UEs for the purposes of the mobile network optimization. In this thesis, a solution to enable communication of a large number of devices, exploiting Device-to-Device (D2D) communication for data relaying, is proposed. To motivate the UEs to relay data of other UEs, we propose a resource allocation algorithm that leads to a natural cooperation of the UEs. To show, that the relaying is not only beneficial from the perspective of an increased number of UEs, we provide an analysis of the energy consumed by the D2D communication. To further increase the number of the UEs we exploit a recent concept of the flying base stations (FlyBSs), and we develop a joint algorithm for a positioning of the FlyBS and an association of the UEs to increase the UEs satisfaction with the provided data rates. The MEC can be exploited not only for processing of the collected data to optimize the mobile networks, but also by the mobile users. The mobile users can exploit the MEC for the computation offloading, i.e., transferring the computation from their UEs to the MEC. However, due to the inherent mobility of the UEs, it is necessary to determine communication and computation resource allocation in order to satisfy the UEs requirements. Therefore, we first propose a solution for a selection of the communication path between the UEs and the MEC (communication resource allocation). Then, we also design an algorithm for joint communication and computation resource allocation. The proposed solution then lead to a reduction in the computation offloading delay by tens of percent

    Distributed drone base station positioning for emergency cellular networks using reinforcement learning

    Due to the unpredictability of natural disasters, whenever a catastrophe happens, it is vital that not only emergency rescue teams are prepared, but also that there is a functional communication network infrastructure. Hence, in order to prevent additional losses of human lives, it is crucial that network operators are able to deploy an emergency infrastructure as fast as possible. In this sense, the deployment of an intelligent, mobile, and adaptable network, through the usage of drones—unmanned aerial vehicles—is being considered as one possible alternative for emergency situations. In this paper, an intelligent solution based on reinforcement learning is proposed in order to find the best position of multiple drone small cells (DSCs) in an emergency scenario. The proposed solution’s main goal is to maximize the amount of users covered by the system, while drones are limited by both backhaul and radio access network constraints. Results show that the proposed Q-learning solution largely outperforms all other approaches with respect to all metrics considered. Hence, intelligent DSCs are considered a good alternative in order to enable the rapid and efficient deployment of an emergency communication network

    A review of relay network on UAVS for enhanced connectivity

    One of the best evolution in technology breakthroughs is the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). This aerial system is able to perform the mission in an agile environment and can reach the hard areas to perform the tasks autonomously. UAVs can be used in post-disaster situations to estimate damages, to monitor and to respond to the victims. The Ground Control Station can also provide emergency messages and ad-hoc communication to the Mobile Users of the disaster-stricken community using this network. A wireless network can also extend its communication range using UAV as a relay. Major requirements from such networks are robustness, scalability, energy efficiency and reliability. In general, UAVs are easy to deploy, have Line of Sight options and are flexible in nature. However, their 3D mobility, energy constraints, and deployment environment introduce many challenges. This paper provides a discussion of basic UAV based multi-hop relay network architecture and analyses their benefits, applications, and tradeoffs. Key design considerations and challenges are investigated finding fundamental issues and potential research directions to exploit them. Finally, analytical tools and frameworks for performance optimizations are presented
