A Comprehensive Performance Evaluation of Deformable Face Tracking "In-the-Wild"
Recently, technologies such as face detection, facial landmark localisation
and face recognition and verification have matured enough to provide effective
and efficient solutions for imagery captured under arbitrary conditions
(referred to as "in-the-wild"). This is partially attributed to the fact that
comprehensive "in-the-wild" benchmarks have been developed for face detection,
landmark localisation and recognition/verification. A very important technology
that has not been thoroughly evaluated yet is deformable face tracking
"in-the-wild". Until now, the performance has mainly been assessed
qualitatively by visually assessing the result of a deformable face tracking
technology on short videos. In this paper, we perform the first, to the best of
our knowledge, thorough evaluation of state-of-the-art deformable face tracking
pipelines using the recently introduced 300VW benchmark. We evaluate many
different architectures focusing mainly on the task of on-line deformable face
tracking. In particular, we compare the following general strategies: (a)
generic face detection plus generic facial landmark localisation, (b) generic
model free tracking plus generic facial landmark localisation, as well as (c)
hybrid approaches using state-of-the-art face detection, model free tracking
and facial landmark localisation technologies. Our evaluation reveals future

Unsupervised learning of object landmarks by factorized spatial embeddings
Learning automatically the structure of object categories remains an
important open problem in computer vision. In this paper, we propose a novel
unsupervised approach that can discover and learn landmarks in object
categories, thus characterizing their structure. Our approach is based on
factorizing image deformations, as induced by a viewpoint change or an object
deformation, by learning a deep neural network that detects landmarks
consistently with such visual effects. Furthermore, we show that the learned
landmarks establish meaningful correspondences between different object
instances in a category without having to impose this requirement explicitly.
We assess the method qualitatively on a variety of object types, natural and
man-made. We also show that our unsupervised landmarks are highly predictive of
manually-annotated landmarks in face benchmark datasets, and can be used to
regress these with a high degree of accuracy.Comment: To be published in ICCV 201
CNN Features off-the-shelf: an Astounding Baseline for Recognition
Recent results indicate that the generic descriptors extracted from the
convolutional neural networks are very powerful. This paper adds to the
mounting evidence that this is indeed the case. We report on a series of
experiments conducted for different recognition tasks using the publicly
available code and model of the \overfeat network which was trained to perform
object classification on ILSVRC13. We use features extracted from the \overfeat
network as a generic image representation to tackle the diverse range of
recognition tasks of object image classification, scene recognition, fine
grained recognition, attribute detection and image retrieval applied to a
diverse set of datasets. We selected these tasks and datasets as they gradually
move further away from the original task and data the \overfeat network was
trained to solve. Astonishingly, we report consistent superior results compared
to the highly tuned state-of-the-art systems in all the visual classification
tasks on various datasets. For instance retrieval it consistently outperforms
low memory footprint methods except for sculptures dataset. The results are
achieved using a linear SVM classifier (or distance in case of retrieval)
applied to a feature representation of size 4096 extracted from a layer in the
net. The representations are further modified using simple augmentation
techniques e.g. jittering. The results strongly suggest that features obtained
from deep learning with convolutional nets should be the primary candidate in

Manipulating Highly Deformable Materials Using a Visual Feedback Dictionary
The complex physical properties of highly deformable materials such as
clothes pose significant challenges fanipulation systems. We present a novel
visual feedback dictionary-based method for manipulating defoor autonomous
robotic mrmable objects towards a desired configuration. Our approach is based
on visual servoing and we use an efficient technique to extract key features
from the RGB sensor stream in the form of a histogram of deformable model
features. These histogram features serve as high-level representations of the
state of the deformable material. Next, we collect manipulation data and use a
visual feedback dictionary that maps the velocity in the high-dimensional
feature space to the velocity of the robotic end-effectors for manipulation. We
have evaluated our approach on a set of complex manipulation tasks and
human-robot manipulation tasks on different cloth pieces with varying material
