A Tutorial on Clique Problems in Communications and Signal Processing
Since its first use by Euler on the problem of the seven bridges of
K\"onigsberg, graph theory has shown excellent abilities in solving and
unveiling the properties of multiple discrete optimization problems. The study
of the structure of some integer programs reveals equivalence with graph theory
problems making a large body of the literature readily available for solving
and characterizing the complexity of these problems. This tutorial presents a
framework for utilizing a particular graph theory problem, known as the clique
problem, for solving communications and signal processing problems. In
particular, the paper aims to illustrate the structural properties of integer
programs that can be formulated as clique problems through multiple examples in
communications and signal processing. To that end, the first part of the
tutorial provides various optimal and heuristic solutions for the maximum
clique, maximum weight clique, and -clique problems. The tutorial, further,
illustrates the use of the clique formulation through numerous contemporary
examples in communications and signal processing, mainly in maximum access for
non-orthogonal multiple access networks, throughput maximization using index
and instantly decodable network coding, collision-free radio frequency
identification networks, and resource allocation in cloud-radio access
networks. Finally, the tutorial sheds light on the recent advances of such
applications, and provides technical insights on ways of dealing with mixed
discrete-continuous optimization problems
Optimality of Treating Interference as Noise: A Combinatorial Perspective
For single-antenna Gaussian interference channels, we re-formulate the
problem of determining the Generalized Degrees of Freedom (GDoF) region
achievable by treating interference as Gaussian noise (TIN) derived in [3] from
a combinatorial perspective. We show that the TIN power control problem can be
cast into an assignment problem, such that the globally optimal power
allocation variables can be obtained by well-known polynomial time algorithms.
Furthermore, the expression of the TIN-Achievable GDoF region (TINA region) can
be substantially simplified with the aid of maximum weighted matchings. We also
provide conditions under which the TINA region is a convex polytope that relax
those in [3]. For these new conditions, together with a channel connectivity
(i.e., interference topology) condition, we show TIN optimality for a new class
of interference networks that is not included, nor includes, the class found in
[3].
Building on the above insights, we consider the problem of joint link
scheduling and power control in wireless networks, which has been widely
studied as a basic physical layer mechanism for device-to-device (D2D)
communications. Inspired by the relaxed TIN channel strength condition as well
as the assignment-based power allocation, we propose a low-complexity
GDoF-based distributed link scheduling and power control mechanism (ITLinQ+)
that improves upon the ITLinQ scheme proposed in [4] and further improves over
the heuristic approach known as FlashLinQ. It is demonstrated by simulation
that ITLinQ+ provides significant average network throughput gains over both
ITLinQ and FlashLinQ, and yet still maintains the same level of implementation
complexity. More notably, the energy efficiency of the newly proposed ITLinQ+
is substantially larger than that of ITLinQ and FlashLinQ, which is desirable
for D2D networks formed by battery-powered devices.Comment: A short version has been presented at IEEE International Symposium on

Beyond Geometry : Towards Fully Realistic Wireless Models
Signal-strength models of wireless communications capture the gradual fading
of signals and the additivity of interference. As such, they are closer to
reality than other models. However, nearly all theoretic work in the SINR model
depends on the assumption of smooth geometric decay, one that is true in free
space but is far off in actual environments. The challenge is to model
realistic environments, including walls, obstacles, reflections and anisotropic
antennas, without making the models algorithmically impractical or analytically
intractable.
We present a simple solution that allows the modeling of arbitrary static
situations by moving from geometry to arbitrary decay spaces. The complexity of
a setting is captured by a metricity parameter Z that indicates how far the
decay space is from satisfying the triangular inequality. All results that hold
in the SINR model in general metrics carry over to decay spaces, with the
resulting time complexity and approximation depending on Z in the same way that
the original results depends on the path loss term alpha. For distributed
algorithms, that to date have appeared to necessarily depend on the planarity,
we indicate how they can be adapted to arbitrary decay spaces.
Finally, we explore the dependence on Z in the approximability of core
problems. In particular, we observe that the capacity maximization problem has
exponential upper and lower bounds in terms of Z in general decay spaces. In
Euclidean metrics and related growth-bounded decay spaces, the performance
depends on the exact metricity definition, with a polynomial upper bound in
terms of Z, but an exponential lower bound in terms of a variant parameter phi.
On the plane, the upper bound result actually yields the first approximation of
a capacity-type SINR problem that is subexponential in alpha
Wireless Scheduling with Power Control
We consider the scheduling of arbitrary wireless links in the physical model
of interference to minimize the time for satisfying all requests. We study here
the combined problem of scheduling and power control, where we seek both an
assignment of power settings and a partition of the links so that each set
satisfies the signal-to-interference-plus-noise (SINR) constraints.
We give an algorithm that attains an approximation ratio of , where is the number of links and is the ratio
between the longest and the shortest link length. Under the natural assumption
that lengths are represented in binary, this gives the first approximation
ratio that is polylogarithmic in the size of the input. The algorithm has the
desirable property of using an oblivious power assignment, where the power
assigned to a sender depends only on the length of the link. We give evidence
that this dependence on is unavoidable, showing that any
reasonably-behaving oblivious power assignment results in a -approximation.
These results hold also for the (weighted) capacity problem of finding a
maximum (weighted) subset of links that can be scheduled in a single time slot.
In addition, we obtain improved approximation for a bidirectional variant of
the scheduling problem, give partial answers to questions about the utility of
graphs for modeling physical interference, and generalize the setting from the
standard 2-dimensional Euclidean plane to doubling metrics. Finally, we explore
the utility of graph models in capturing wireless interference.Comment: Revised full versio
Algorithmic Aspects of Energy-Delay Tradeoff in Multihop Cooperative Wireless Networks
We consider the problem of energy-efficient transmission in delay constrained
cooperative multihop wireless networks. The combinatorial nature of cooperative
multihop schemes makes it difficult to design efficient polynomial-time
algorithms for deciding which nodes should take part in cooperation, and when
and with what power they should transmit. In this work, we tackle this problem
in memoryless networks with or without delay constraints, i.e., quality of
service guarantee. We analyze a wide class of setups, including unicast,
multicast, and broadcast, and two main cooperative approaches, namely: energy
accumulation (EA) and mutual information accumulation (MIA). We provide a
generalized algorithmic formulation of the problem that encompasses all those
cases. We investigate the similarities and differences of EA and MIA in our
generalized formulation. We prove that the broadcast and multicast problems
are, in general, not only NP hard but also o(log(n)) inapproximable. We break
these problems into three parts: ordering, scheduling and power control, and
propose a novel algorithm that, given an ordering, can optimally solve the
joint power allocation and scheduling problems simultaneously in polynomial
time. We further show empirically that this algorithm used in conjunction with
an ordering derived heuristically using the Dijkstra's shortest path algorithm
yields near-optimal performance in typical settings. For the unicast case, we
prove that although the problem remains NP hard with MIA, it can be solved
optimally and in polynomial time when EA is used. We further use our algorithm
to study numerically the trade-off between delay and power-efficiency in
cooperative broadcast and compare the performance of EA vs MIA as well as the
performance of our cooperative algorithm with a smart noncooperative algorithm
