    Semantic-based policy engineering for autonomic systems

    This paper presents some important directions in the use of ontology-based semantics in achieving the vision of Autonomic Communications. We examine the requirements of Autonomic Communication with a focus on the demanding needs of ubiquitous computing environments, with an emphasis on the requirements shared with Autonomic Computing. We observe that ontologies provide a strong mechanism for addressing the heterogeneity in user task requirements, managed resources, services and context. We then present two complimentary approaches that exploit ontology-based knowledge in support of autonomic communications: service-oriented models for policy engineering and dynamic semantic queries using content-based networks.     Building Open Educational Resources from the Ground Up: South Africa's Free High School Science Texts

    This paper presents a case study of the development of the South African project Free High School Science Texts (FHSST), an initiative to develop a free high school science text for all teachers and learners in South Africa. The goals of the case study were two-fold: to examine and analyze the practices associated with the successes and challenges encountered by FHSST; and to encourage a participatory, analytical process that will assist other open education projects in thinking about and sharing their practices, processes, and strategies. Beyond its implications for South African education, the FHSST project can serve as a model for peer production of open content, offering insights into planning and decision making around 1) recruiting volunteers; 2) sustaining their participation; 3) using technology to create effective workflow; 4) conducting hackathons; and 5) facilitating teacher trials. Findings from this study offers insights into overall approaches and goals that may prove instrumental across open education projects, serving as a reference for development of assessment tools and resources that may assist open education projects in tracking, sharing, and advancing their learnings and success

    An active, ontology-driven network service for Internet collaboration

    Web portals have emerged as an important means of collaboration on the WWW, and the integration of ontologies promises to make them more accurate in how they serve users’ collaboration and information location requirements. However, web portals are essentially a centralised architecture resulting in difficulties supporting seamless roaming between portals and collaboration between groups supported on different portals. This paper proposes an alternative approach to collaboration over the web using ontologies that is de-centralised and exploits content-based networking. We argue that this approach promises a user-centric, timely, secure and location-independent mechanism, which is potentially more scaleable and universal than existing centralised portals

    The evolving landscape of learning technology

    This paper provides an overview of the current and emerging issues in learning technology research, concentrating on structural issues such as infrastructure, policy and organizational context. It updates the vision of technology outlined by Squires’ (1999) concept of peripatetic electronic teachers (PETs) where Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) provide an enabling medium to allow teachers to act as freelance agents in a virtual world and reflects to what extent this vision has been realized The paper begins with a survey of some of the key areas of ICT development and provides a contextualizing framework for the area in terms of external agendas and policy drivers. It then focuses upon learning technology developments which have occurred in the last five years in the UK and offers a number of alternative taxonomies to describe this. The paper concludes with a discussion of the issues which arise from this work

    USER CENTRIC POLICY MANAGEMENT

    Internet use, in general, and online social networking sites, in particular, are ex- periencing tremendous growth with hundreds of millions of active users. As a result, there is a tremendous amount of privacy information and content online. Protect- ing this information is a challenge. Access control policy composition is complex, laborious and tedious for the average user. Usable access control frameworks have lagged. Acceptance / use of available frameworks is low. As a result, policies are only partially configured and maintained. Or, they may be all together ignored. This leads to privacy information and content not being properly protected and potentially unknowingly made available to unintended recipients. We overcome these limitations by introducing User Centric Policy Management – a new paradigm of semi-automated tools that aid users in building, recommending and maintaining their online access control policies. We introduce six user centric policy management assistance tools: Policy Manager is a supervised learning based mech- anism that leverages user provided example policy settings to build classifiers that are the basis for auto-generated policies. Assisted Friend Grouping leverages proven clustering techniques to assist users in grouping their friends for policy management purposes. Same-As Subject Management leverages a user’s memory and opinion of their friends to set policies for other similar friends. Example Friend Selection pro- vides different techniques for aiding users in selecting friends used in the development of access control policies. Same-As Object Management leverages a user’s memory and perception of their objects for setting policies for other similar objects. iLayer is a least privilege based access control model for web and social networking sites that builds, recommends and enforces access control policies for third party developed applications. To demonstrate the effectiveness of these policy management assistance tools, we implemented a suite of prototype applications, conducted numerous experiments and completed a number of extensive user studies. The results show that User Centric Pol- icy Management is a more usable access control framework that is effective, efficient and satisfying to the user, which ultimately improves online security and privacy
