Copyright, Fair Use and the Digital Age in Academic Libraries: A Review of the Literature
Copyright law in the United States has gained a certain notoriety for its complexity and ambiguity, which has only been compounded by the evolution (or, some would say, revolution) of print resources to electronic resources. The purpose of this literature review is to review the current understanding of copyright law within the context of academic libraries in universities and colleges. Additionally, this review will describe what issues academic librarians face in complying with copyright law in this new digital age while continuing to perform duties such as processing course reserve materials, developing an institutional repository, and maintaining a digital collection. This literature review emphasizes the need for further and continuing education about copyright law among all members of the campus community, and, in particular, academic librarians
Practices, policies, and problems in the management of learning data: A survey of librariesâ use of digital learning objects and the data they create
This study analyzed librariesâ management of the data generated by library digital learning objects (DLOâs) such as forms, surveys, quizzes, and tutorials. A substantial proportion of respondents reported having a policy relevant to learning data, typically a campus-level policy, but most did not. Other problems included a lack of access to library learning data, concerns about student privacy, inadequate granularity or standardization, and a lack of knowledge about colleaguesâ practices. We propose more dialogue on learning data within libraries, between libraries and administrators, and across the library profession

Free Expression on Campus: A Survey of U.S. College Students and U.S. Adults
U.S. college students are highly confident that First Amendment rights are secure, yet a slight majority say the climate on campus prevents some people from saying what they believe because others might find it offensive, a Gallup survey has found. The survey, sponsored by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and the Newseum Institute, revealed differences in the attitudes of students and the U.S. population as a whole toward First Amendment rights, as well as differences among male, female, white and minority students about whether it was ever appropriate to restrict free speech. This study sought to better understand how U.S. college students interpret their First Amendment rights, and their views of how to balance those rights against other considerations
Academic Libraries as Enablers to Prepare Graduate Students for Open Scholarship
A plethora of digital tools have become available in the past decade to facilitate different tasks in the scholarly communication process. Meanwhile, research funders have established policies that require grant recipients to practice open scholarship by sharing their research deliverables online. Graduate students as junior scholars may feel overwhelmed due to their unfamiliarity with some digital tools and how to be in compliance with research fundersâ requirements. To prepare them for academic success and open scholarship, academic libraries have partnered with graduate schools to educate students about scholarly communication issues.
With the focus on a public university in the U.S., this poster aims to discuss how the library has taken the initiative to collaborate with campus constituents to enhance graduate studentsâ understanding of four scholarly communication topics: 1. Research disambiguation and citability; 2. Copyright and licensing; 3. Research data management; and 4. Scholarly journal publishing and access. Specifically, the poster will address what has been done to promote the use of persistent identifiers and to highlight peopleâs rights when producing, consuming, and reusing information. There will also be discussion about the significance of managing and sharing research data and different access models for scholarly publications. When appropriate, examples from other institutions will be brought up to enrich the discussion. In addition, the poster will cover lessons learned, effective strategies, and recommended practices in light of the feedback received from graduate students and collaborating campus units. Relevant resources from the library community will be identified so that interested colleagues can refer to them for inspiration.
In summary, this poster will illuminate how academic libraries can play a crucial role in enabling graduate students to not only disseminate their theses and dissertations broadly but also adapt and thrive as open scholars in the digital age. Its coverage may result in more exploration of collaboration opportunities among campus units in order to better support graduate studentsâ intellectual growth holistically
The Digital Scholar Revisited
The book The Digital Scholar was published in 2011, and used Boyerâs framework of scholarship to examine the possible impact of digital, networked technology on scholarly practice. In 2011 the general attitude towards digital scholarship was cautious, although areas of innovative practice were emerging. Using this book as a basis, the author considers changes in digital scholarship since its publication. Five key themes are identified: mainstreaming of digital scholarship, so that it is a widely accepted and encouraged practice; the shift to open, with the emphasis on the benefits that open practice brings rather than the digital or networked aspects; policy implementation, particularly in areas of educational technology platforms, open access policies and open educational resources; network identity, emphasising the development of academic identity through social media and other tools; criticality of digital scholarship, which examines the negative issues associated with online abuse, privacy and data usage. Each of these themes is explored, and their impact in terms of Boyerâs original framing of scholarly activity considered. Boyerâs four scholarly activities of discovery, integration, application and teaching can be viewed from the perspective of these five themes. In conclusion what has been realised does not constitute a revolution in academic practice, but rather a gradual acceptance and utilisation of digital scholarship techniques, practices and values. It is simultaneously true that both radical change has taken place, and nothing has fundamentally altered. Much of the increased adoption in academia mirrors the wider penetration of social media tools amongst society in general, so academics are more likely to have an identity in such places that mixes professional and personal
Students\u27 use of personal technology in the classroom: analyzing the perceptions of the digital generation
Faculty frequently express concerns about studentsâ personal use of information
and communication technologies in todayâs university classrooms. As a requirement
of a graduate research methodology course in a university in Ontario,
Canada, the authors conducted qualitative research to gain an in-depth understanding
of studentsâ perceptions of this issue. Their findings reveal studentsâ
complex considerations about the acceptability of technology use. Their analysis
of the broader contexts of studentsâ use reveals that despite a technological revolution,
university teaching practices have remained largely the same, resulting in
âcultural lagâ within the classroom. While faculty are technically âin chargeâ, students
wield power through course evaluations, surveillance technologies and
Internet postings. Neoliberalism and the corporatisation of the university have
engendered an âentrepreneurial studentâ customer who sees education as a means
to a career. Understanding studentsâ perceptions and their technological, social
and political contexts offers insights into the tensions within todayâs classrooms
Open Data, Grey Data, and Stewardship: Universities at the Privacy Frontier
As universities recognize the inherent value in the data they collect and
hold, they encounter unforeseen challenges in stewarding those data in ways
that balance accountability, transparency, and protection of privacy, academic
freedom, and intellectual property. Two parallel developments in academic data
collection are converging: (1) open access requirements, whereby researchers
must provide access to their data as a condition of obtaining grant funding or
publishing results in journals; and (2) the vast accumulation of 'grey data'
about individuals in their daily activities of research, teaching, learning,
services, and administration. The boundaries between research and grey data are
blurring, making it more difficult to assess the risks and responsibilities
associated with any data collection. Many sets of data, both research and grey,
fall outside privacy regulations such as HIPAA, FERPA, and PII. Universities
are exploiting these data for research, learning analytics, faculty evaluation,
strategic decisions, and other sensitive matters. Commercial entities are
besieging universities with requests for access to data or for partnerships to
mine them. The privacy frontier facing research universities spans open access
practices, uses and misuses of data, public records requests, cyber risk, and
curating data for privacy protection. This paper explores the competing values
inherent in data stewardship and makes recommendations for practice, drawing on
the pioneering work of the University of California in privacy and information

Illinois Digital Scholarship: Preserving and Accessing the Digital Past, Present, and Future
Since the University's establishment in 1867, its scholarly output has been issued primarily in print, and the University Library and Archives have been readily able to collect, preserve, and to provide access to that output. Today, technological, economic, political and social forces are buffeting all means of scholarly communication. Scholars, academic institutions and publishers are engaged in debate about the impact of digital scholarship and open access publishing on the promotion and tenure process. The upsurge in digital scholarship affects many aspects of the academic enterprise, including how we record, evaluate, preserve, organize and disseminate scholarly work. The result has left the Library with no ready means by which to archive digitally produced publications, reports, presentations, and learning objects, much of which cannot be adequately represented in print form. In this incredibly fluid environment of digital scholarship, the critical question of how we will collect, preserve, and manage access to this important part of the University scholarly record demands a rational and forward-looking plan - one that includes perspectives from diverse scholarly disciplines, incorporates significant research breakthroughs in information science and computer science, and makes effective projections for future integration within the Library and computing services as a part of the campus infrastructure.Prepared jointly by the University of Illinois Library and CITES at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaig
