Data augmentation in Rician noise model and Bayesian Diffusion Tensor Imaging
Mapping white matter tracts is an essential step towards understanding brain
function. Diffusion Magnetic Resonance Imaging (dMRI) is the only noninvasive
technique which can detect in vivo anisotropies in the 3-dimensional diffusion
of water molecules, which correspond to nervous fibers in the living brain. In
this process, spectral data from the displacement distribution of water
molecules is collected by a magnetic resonance scanner. From the statistical
point of view, inverting the Fourier transform from such sparse and noisy
spectral measurements leads to a non-linear regression problem. Diffusion
tensor imaging (DTI) is the simplest modeling approach postulating a Gaussian
displacement distribution at each volume element (voxel). Typically the
inference is based on a linearized log-normal regression model that can fit the
spectral data at low frequencies. However such approximation fails to fit the
high frequency measurements which contain information about the details of the
displacement distribution but have a low signal to noise ratio. In this paper,
we directly work with the Rice noise model and cover the full range of
-values. Using data augmentation to represent the likelihood, we reduce the
non-linear regression problem to the framework of generalized linear models.
Then we construct a Bayesian hierarchical model in order to perform
simultaneously estimation and regularization of the tensor field. Finally the
Bayesian paradigm is implemented by using Markov chain Monte Carlo.Comment: 37 pages, 3 figure
Extended Object Tracking: Introduction, Overview and Applications
This article provides an elaborate overview of current research in extended
object tracking. We provide a clear definition of the extended object tracking
problem and discuss its delimitation to other types of object tracking. Next,
different aspects of extended object modelling are extensively discussed.
Subsequently, we give a tutorial introduction to two basic and well used
extended object tracking approaches - the random matrix approach and the Kalman
filter-based approach for star-convex shapes. The next part treats the tracking
of multiple extended objects and elaborates how the large number of feasible
association hypotheses can be tackled using both Random Finite Set (RFS) and
Non-RFS multi-object trackers. The article concludes with a summary of current
applications, where four example applications involving camera, X-band radar,
light detection and ranging (lidar), red-green-blue-depth (RGB-D) sensors are

Gene network inference by fusing data from diverse distributions
Markov networks are undirected graphical models that are widely used to infer relations between genes from experimental data. Their state-of-the-art inference procedures assume the data arise from a Gaussian distribution. High-throughput omics data, such as that from next generation sequencing, often violates this assumption. Furthermore, when collected data arise from multiple related but otherwise nonidentical distributions, their underlying networks are likely to have common features. New principled statistical approaches are needed that can deal with different data distributions and jointly consider collections of datasets. We present FuseNet, a Markov network formulation that infers networks from a collection of nonidentically distributed datasets. Our approach is computationally efficient and general: given any number of distributions from an exponential family, FuseNet represents model parameters through shared latent factors that define neighborhoods of network nodes. In a simulation study, we demonstrate good predictive performance of FuseNet in comparison to several popular graphical models. We show its effectiveness in an application to breast cancer RNA-sequencing and somatic mutation data, a novel application of graphical models. Fusion of datasets offers substantial gains relative to inference of separate networks for each dataset. Our results demonstrate that network inference methods for non-Gaussian data can help in accurate modeling of the data generated by emergent high-throughput technologies
Multi-Bernoulli Sensor-Control via Minimization of Expected Estimation Errors
This paper presents a sensor-control method for choosing the best next state
of the sensor(s), that provide(s) accurate estimation results in a multi-target
tracking application. The proposed solution is formulated for a multi-Bernoulli
filter and works via minimization of a new estimation error-based cost
function. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method can
outperform the state-of-the-art methods in terms of computation time and
robustness to clutter while delivering similar accuracy
