    On rr-Guarding Thin Orthogonal Polygons

    Guarding a polygon with few guards is an old and well-studied problem in computational geometry. Here we consider the following variant: We assume that the polygon is orthogonal and thin in some sense, and we consider a point pp to guard a point qq if and only if the minimum axis-aligned rectangle spanned by pp and qq is inside the polygon. A simple proof shows that this problem is NP-hard on orthogonal polygons with holes, even if the polygon is thin. If there are no holes, then a thin polygon becomes a tree polygon in the sense that the so-called dual graph of the polygon is a tree. It was known that finding the minimum set of rr-guards is polynomial for tree polygons, but the run-time was O~(n17)\tilde{O}(n^{17}). We show here that with a different approach the running time becomes linear, answering a question posed by Biedl et al. (SoCG 2011). Furthermore, the approach is much more general, allowing to specify subsets of points to guard and guards to use, and it generalizes to polygons with hh holes or thickness KK, becoming fixed-parameter tractable in h+Kh+K.Comment: 18 page

    Guard placement for efficient pointin-polygon proofs

    {eppstein, goodrich, nodari} (at) ics.uci.edu We consider the problem of placing a small number of angle guards inside a simple polygon P so as to provide efficient proofs that any given point is inside P. Each angle guard views an infinite wedge of the plane, and a point can prove membership in P if it is inside the wedges for a set of guards whose common intersection contains no points outside the polygon. This model leads to a broad class of new art gallery type problems, which we call “sculpture garden ” problems and for which we provide upper and lower bounds. In particular, we show there is a polygon P such that a “natural” angle-guard vertex placement cannot fully distinguish between points on the inside and outside of P (even if we place a guard at every vertex of P), which implies that Steinerpoint guards are sometimes necessary. More generally, we show that, for any polygon P, there is a set of n + 2(h − 1) angle guards that solve the sculpture garden problem for P, where h is the number of holes in P (so a simple polygon can be defined with n − 2 guards). In addition, we show that, for any orthogonal polygon P, the sculpture garden problem can be solved using n angle guards. We also give an 2 example of a class of simple (non-general-position) polygons that have sculpture garden solutions using O ( √ n) guards, and we show this bound is optimal to within a constant factor. Finally, while optimizing the number of guards solving a sculpture garden problem for a particular P is of unknown complexity, we show how to find in polynomial time a guard placement whose size is within a factor of 2 of the optimal number for any particular polygon

    Grid-Obstacle Representations with Connections to Staircase Guarding

    In this paper, we study grid-obstacle representations of graphs where we assign grid-points to vertices and define obstacles such that an edge exists if and only if an xyxy-monotone grid path connects the two endpoints without hitting an obstacle or another vertex. It was previously argued that all planar graphs have a grid-obstacle representation in 2D, and all graphs have a grid-obstacle representation in 3D. In this paper, we show that such constructions are possible with significantly smaller grid-size than previously achieved. Then we study the variant where vertices are not blocking, and show that then grid-obstacle representations exist for bipartite graphs. The latter has applications in so-called staircase guarding of orthogonal polygons; using our grid-obstacle representations, we show that staircase guarding is \textsc{NP}-hard in 2D.Comment: To appear in the proceedings of the 25th International Symposium on Graph Drawing and Network Visualization (GD 2017

    Searching Polyhedra by Rotating Half-Planes

    The Searchlight Scheduling Problem was first studied in 2D polygons, where the goal is for point guards in fixed positions to rotate searchlights to catch an evasive intruder. Here the problem is extended to 3D polyhedra, with the guards now boundary segments who rotate half-planes of illumination. After carefully detailing the 3D model, several results are established. The first is a nearly direct extension of the planar one-way sweep strategy using what we call exhaustive guards, a generalization that succeeds despite there being no well-defined notion in 3D of planar "clockwise rotation". Next follow two results: every polyhedron with r>0 reflex edges can be searched by at most r^2 suitably placed guards, whereas just r guards suffice if the polyhedron is orthogonal. (Minimizing the number of guards to search a given polyhedron is easily seen to be NP-hard.) Finally we show that deciding whether a given set of guards has a successful search schedule is strongly NP-hard, and that deciding if a given target area is searchable at all is strongly PSPACE-hard, even for orthogonal polyhedra. A number of peripheral results are proved en route to these central theorems, and several open problems remain for future work.Comment: 45 pages, 26 figure

    Facets for Art Gallery Problems

    The Art Gallery Problem (AGP) asks for placing a minimum number of stationary guards in a polygonal region P, such that all points in P are guarded. The problem is known to be NP-hard, and its inherent continuous structure (with both the set of points that need to be guarded and the set of points that can be used for guarding being uncountably infinite) makes it difficult to apply a straightforward formulation as an Integer Linear Program. We use an iterative primal-dual relaxation approach for solving AGP instances to optimality. At each stage, a pair of LP relaxations for a finite candidate subset of primal covering and dual packing constraints and variables is considered; these correspond to possible guard positions and points that are to be guarded. Particularly useful are cutting planes for eliminating fractional solutions. We identify two classes of facets, based on Edge Cover and Set Cover (SC) inequalities. Solving the separation problem for the latter is NP-complete, but exploiting the underlying geometric structure, we show that large subclasses of fractional SC solutions cannot occur for the AGP. This allows us to separate the relevant subset of facets in polynomial time. We also characterize all facets for finite AGP relaxations with coefficients in {0, 1, 2}. Finally, we demonstrate the practical usefulness of our approach.
