Plasma medicine: an introductory review
This introductory review on plasma health care is intended to
provide the interested reader with a summary of the current status of this
emerging field, its scope, and its broad interdisciplinary approach, ranging
from plasma physics, chemistry and technology, to microbiology, biochemistry,
biophysics, medicine and hygiene. Apart from the basic plasma processes
and the restrictions and requirements set by international health standards,
the review focuses on plasma interaction with prokaryotic cells (bacteria),
eukaryotic cells (mammalian cells), cell membranes, DNA etc. In so doing, some
of the unfamiliar terminology—an unavoidable by-product of interdisciplinary
research—is covered and explained. Plasma health care may provide a fast and
efficient new path for effective hospital (and other public buildings) hygiene—
helping to prevent and contain diseases that are continuously gaining ground
as resistance of pathogens to antibiotics grows. The delivery of medically
active ‘substances’ at the molecular or ionic level is another exciting topic
of research through effects on cell walls (permeabilization), cell excitation
(paracrine action) and the introduction of reactive species into cell cytoplasm.
Electric fields, charging of surfaces, current flows etc can also affect tissue in
a controlled way. The field is young and hopes are high. It is fitting to cover
the beginnings in New Journal of Physics, since it is the physics (and nonequilibrium
chemistry) of room temperature atmospheric pressure plasmas that
have made this development of plasma health care possible
Millimeter Wave Systems for Wireless Cellular Communications
This thesis considers channel estimation and multiuser (MU) data transmission
for massive MIMO systems with fully digital/hybrid structures in mmWave
channels. It contains three main contributions. In this thesis, we first
propose a tone-based linear search algorithm to facilitate the estimation of
angle-of-arrivals of the strongest components as well as scattering components
of the users at the base station (BS) with fully digital structure. Our results
show that the proposed maximum-ratio transmission (MRT) based on the strongest
components can achieve a higher data rate than that of the conventional MRT,
under the same mean squared errors (MSE). Second, we develop a low-complexity
channel estimation and beamformer/precoder design scheme for hybrid mmWave
systems. In addition, the proposed scheme applies to both non-sparse and sparse
mmWave channel environments. We then leverage the proposed scheme to
investigate the downlink achievable rate performance. The results show that the
proposed scheme obtains a considerable achievable rate of fully digital
systems. Taking into account the effect of various types of errors, we
investigate the achievable rate performance degradation of the considered
scheme. Third, we extend our proposed scheme to a multi-cell MU mmWave MIMO
network. We derive the closed-form approximation of the normalized MSE of
channel estimation under pilot contamination over Rician fading channels.
Furthermore, we derive a tight closed-form approximation and the scaling law of
the average achievable rate. Our results unveil that channel estimation errors,
the intra-cell interference, and the inter-cell interference caused by pilot
contamination over Rician fading channels can be efficiently mitigated by
simply increasing the number of antennas equipped at the desired BS.Comment: Thesi

There are over 17,000 postable terms and nearly 4,000 nonpostable terms approved for use in the NASA scientific and technical information system in the Hierarchical Listing of the NASA Thesaurus. The generic structure is presented for many terms. The broader term and narrower term relationships are shown in an indented fashion that illustrates the generic structure better than the more widely used BT and NT listings. Related terms are generously applied, thus enhancing the usefulness of the Hierarchical Listing. Each program option is then described in terms of the objective elements it supports, its orbit, the general makeup of the SCB, the transportation approach, and the program schedule goals. The radioactive materials packaging handbook: Design, operations, and maintenance
As part of its required activities in 1994, the US Department of Energy (DOE) made over 500,000 shipments. Of these shipments, approximately 4% were hazardous, and of these, slightly over 1% (over 6,400 shipments) were radioactive. Because of DOE`s cleanup activities, the total quantities and percentages of radioactive material (RAM) that must be moved from one site to another is expected to increase in the coming years, and these materials are likely to be different than those shipped in the past. Irradiated fuel will certainly be part of the mix as will RAM samples and waste. However, in many cases these materials will be of different shape and size and require a transport packaging having different shielding, thermal, and criticality avoidance characteristics than are currently available. Web-based learning and teaching resources for microscopic detection of human parasites.
DMU e-Parasitology (http://parasitology.dmu.ac.uk) presents novel web-based resources co-developed by EU academics at De Montfort University (DMU) for the teaching and learning of microscopic diagnoses of common and emerging human parasites. The package will be completed early in 2019 and presents a Virtual Laboratory and Microscope, which are equipped with engaging units for learning parasitological staining and fresh preparation techniques for detecting cysts, oocysts, eggs and spores, in conjunction with a library of digitised clinical slides. Units are equipped with short videos of academics performing the different techniques and quizzes and exercises, to provide students with the most practical experience possible
